The U.S. Women's Fencing Team Proved Themselves to Be for Real in the End of the Sabre Competition
In the history of Women's fencing, the United States has a grand total of one medal, with that coming in the 2004 Olympic Games, when Sada Jacobson ended up taking home the Bronze medal. That all changed on Saturday,
Heading into the semi-finals of the Women's Individual Sabre (Fencing), three Americans were in the final four spots, led by Sada Jacobson. In addition to Jacobson, the other contestants were Mariel Zagunia (U.S.A.), Becca Ward (U.S.A.), and Sofiya Velikaya (Russian Federation). The matches for the semi-finals were set up with Jacobson facing Velikaya, and Zagunia and Ward facing off in the other match. That meant that the United States were guaranteed to come away with at least two medals in the competition, and held the possibility that they could of course win all three.
In the first semi-final match, Sada Jacobson continued to show why she has been so great in these Olympics, as she took out Sofiya Velikaya of the Russian Federation by a final score of 15-11. That put her in the finals, and a guaranteed match-up against one of her American teammates.

The U.S. Women's Fencing Team Proved Themselves to Be for Real in the End of the Sabre Competition
The Bronze Medal match was fought out between Becca Ward (U.S.A.) and Sofiya Velikaya (Russian Federation), and it looked like a great match-up right from the start. It ended up going all the way down to the wire, with Becca Ward pulling it out in dramatic style by a score of 15-14. The victory not only got her the Bronze medal, but insured that the United States would sweep the Sabre Fencing competition.
The face-off of two Americans for a Fencing Gold Medal was never expected, as no woman has ever won a silver or a gold medal in the sport. Now everything was about to change as Mariel Zagunia and Sada Jacobson took to the floor to decide who would be the champion of this field of competitors. Zagunia took control of the match early, and didn't look back, winning the Gold Medal match over Jacobson by a score of 15-8.
    The Medal Winners:
    Gold Mariel Zagunia (U.S.A.)
