Frida Kahlo La Columna Rota • 1944 The great Mexican painter Frida Kahlo suffered chronic widespread pain and exhaustion after a terrible accident. Our research suggests that FM was the cause of Frida's chronic illness. Many of Frida's portraits (for example The Broken Column) communicate pain and anguish with the emotional overtones that FM patients frequently use to describe their illness. In her diary, Frida draws herself in pain and eleven arrows point to specific anatomical sites.. Many years later, the majority of these sites were found to be the typical fibromyalgia tender points. • What is Fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgia (FM) is a common illness that affects ~ 2 to 4 % of the general population, of which the majority are female. The illness may be triggered by physical or emotional trauma. FM is characterized by chronic widespread pain, by sleeping problems, and by profound fatigue that does not improve after resting. There is significant overlap between FM and chronic fatigue syndrome. Patients with FM frequently have other symptoms such as headaches, nocturnal jaw tightness, morning stiffness, tingling and numbness of arms and legs, irritable bowel, urinary urgency, dryness in the mouth and eyes, cold swollen hands, anxiety and/or depression. Another characteristic of FM is tenderness at palpation in defined points at the neck and lower back areas.

People with fibromyalgia may have other symptoms, such as trouble sleeping, morning stiffness, headaches, and problems with thinking and memory, sometimes called "fibro fog." No one knows what causes fibromyalgia. Anyone can get it, but it is most common in middle-aged women. People with rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases are particularly likely to develop fibromyalgia. There is no cure for fibromyalgia, but medicines can help you manage your symptoms. Getting enough sleep and exercising may also help. zSB(3,3) Question: How Is Fibromyalgia Diagnosed? Fibromyalgia is often difficult to diagnose since its symptoms overlap with many other rheumatic conditions. Are there diagnostic laboratory tests for fibromyalgia? What are the diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia? What are fibromyalgia tender points? How is fibromyalgia diagnosed? Answer:
    Fibromyalgia Diagnosis Is Difficult
Research shows that people with fibromyalgia typically see many doctors before receiving the diagnosis. One reason for this may be that pain and fatigue , the main symptoms of fibromyalgia, overlap with many other conditions.

Getting To Know What Is Fibromyalgia
Comments Off Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition where the individual is experiencing tenderness, stiffness and pain in the muscles. Other symptoms include lots of fatigue, irregular sleep and very tender soft tissue. The usual location for these symptoms to occur are the shoulders, neck, hands, pelvic girdle and the hands. There is characteristically no pain in the joints when it hits people. The pain is rather in the soft tissues all over the body including around the joints. Let us look at the effects fibromyalgia will have on your body. The first sign is pain and the kind of pain that is excruciating. The pain depends on how badly you have fibromyalgia and also does spread around a lot in many cases. The pain is either a long stretched ache, sudden pangs of pain for seemingly no reason at all or a constant heart beat like feeling in the muscles which pain. Sometimes the pain can manifest even as a burning and even a numb feeling. There are certain external factors that play a large role in these symptoms rather the condition itself. These are the levels of physical activity that one’s body may be under (either if it is too active or too inactive), weather (cold weather worsens the pain greatly), stress (probably also anxiety) and mental and physical fatigue.

netseer_tag_id = "1110"; netseer_ad_width = "480"; netseer_ad_height = "40"; netseer_task = "ad"; You're constantly in pain; you have extreme fatigue and suffer from chronic headaches as well as irritable bowel syndrome. But is it really fibromyalgia? Diagnostic Criteria
The difficulty with diagnosing fibromyalgia lies in the fact that, in most cases, laboratory testing appears normal and that many of the symptoms mimic those of other disorders. A definite diagnosis of fibromyalgia syndrome should only be made when no other medical disease can explain the symptoms. This is to say, fibromyalgia is a diagnosis of exclusion. A proper history and physical exam coupled with blood work and/or x-rays may be done to rule out:
    • Hormonal imbalance Anemia Infection Muscle disease Bone disease Nerve disease Joint disease Cancer Rheumatoid arthritis Polymyalgia rheumatica
Electrical nerve and muscle testing, known as electromyography (EMG) or nerve conduction velocity (NCV), may also be done to check the muscles and nerves.
