Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a common syndrome in which people experience long-term, body-wide pain and tender points in joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. Fibromyalgia has also been linked to fatigue, sleep problems, headaches, depression, anxiety, and other symptoms.
Causes
The cause of this disorder is unknown. Although none have been well proven, possible causes or triggers of fibromyalgia include:
  • Physical or emotional trauma An abnormal pain response. Areas in the brain that are responsible for pain may react differently in fibromyalgia patients. Sleep disturbances, which are common in fibromyalgia patients. An infectious microbe, such as a virus. At this point, no such virus or microbe has been identified.
Men and women of all ages get fibromyalgia, but the disorder is most common among women aged 20 to 50. The following conditions may be seen with fibromyalgia or mimic its symptoms:
  • Chronic neck or back pain Chronic fatigue syndrome Depression Hypothyroidism Lyme disease Sleep disorders
Symptoms
The primary symptom of fibromyalgia is pain.

About This Site Hypermobility Fibromyalgia ... Get in Touch Welcome!
This site is dedicated to providing information and support for people with both joint hypermobility (including Ehlers-Danlos and Benign Joint Hypermobility Syndromes, or any form of Hypermobility Syndrome) and Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (aka Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome, or Myalgic Encephalopathy in the U.K. and Australia). It is the first of its kind and provides information on these conditions, and also links to many sites with much more detailed information. It's important to note that this is an amateur site, not an official local, national or international support or information group. Hopefully, however, small individual endeavours like this will pave the way for such official groups to emerge. In addition, the Hypermobility & Fibromyalgia Group (hm-ed-fm) is the only discussion/support group online for people with both of these conditions. All are welcome! Click on the "Support: Talk to Others" link in the navigation bar on the left to learn more about the mailing list, as well as the vibrant Webforum and Chat Room.

Fibrofog, Fibromyalgia and Dissociation Understanding why some memory-impaired patients with fibromyalgia score normally on neuropsychological testing. Frank Leavitt, Ph.D.
fleavitt@rush.edu

Our clinical and research experience suggests a way of unraveling the mysterious discrepancy between patient conviction and neuropsychological findings. Instead of the flaw residing in the patient complaint, it may well be that these patients as a group are being held to the wrong standards. Testing logic often takes the following form: if memory deficits fail to be demonstrated by scores on standard measures of memory that operationally define level of impairment, then fibromyalgia patients are overestimating or overplaying the severity of their memory decline. The logic is flawed because it does not account fully for the many ways memory failures arise and overlooks shortcomings in the testing process. A process prominently linked to memory impairment is dissociation. Dissociation is a failure to integrate experiences that normally go together. Short-term memory complaints of dissociatives are well known to mimic the complaints of patients with fibromyalgia that we now refer to as fibrofog . Level of dissociation fluctuates in intensity throughout the day. Variation is likely to be influenced by daily stress. With rising intensity, sensory experience is transformed into haze like sensations leaving the patients feeling as if enveloped in a fog. At more severe intensity, lapses in memory are likely to occur leaving the individual unable to remember what was said, done or planned. But cognitive testing at levels of dissociative intensity (low) that are less apt to affect memory should yield normal performance.
