Fibromyalgia Syndrome
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a common rheumatoid disorder of the muscles and bones that does not involve the joints. FMS causes pain and fatigue, and people with FMS feel as if their muscles have been pulled or overworked. Sometimes the muscles twitch or burn.
Fibromyalgia Causes and Risk Factors
The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not known. It is not associated with injuries to muscles, nerves or joints nor to any serious body damage or disease. FMS affects more women than men and occurs in people of all ages. In some people, FMS is associated with measurable changes in body chemistry and functioning, but it is not known whether these changes are causes or effects of FMS. Stress and difficulty sleeping may contribute to FMS because lack of restful sleep can decrease the body's production of the chemicals needed to regulate pain. Other factors (such as illness, infection or anxiety) may also cause changes in body chemistry that lead to these symptoms.
Fibromyalgia Symptoms
The signs of FMS include aches and pains in muscles, tendons and joints all over the body, but especially along the spine. Some people feel more pain when they try to relax and less when they are active, busy or exercising. Other symptoms include:

The defining symptoms of fibromyalgia are often associated with other subjective and objective symptoms which occur in combination. It is estimated that fibromyalgia syndrome affects about 2 percent of the U.S. population. Time Required: Variable Here's How:
  • In 1990, the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) listed two primary criteria for the classification of fibromyalgia. 1) A history of widespread pain involving all four quadrants of the body (right side, left side, above waist, below waist) for a period of at least 3 months.

It is a multisystem disease characterized by sleep disturbance, fatigue, headache, morning stiffness, paresthesias, and anxiety. Nearly 2 percent of the general population in the United States suffers from fibromyalgia, with females of middle age being at increased risk. The diagnosis is primarily based on the presence of widespread pain for a period of at least three months and the presence of 11 tender points among 18 specific anatomic sites. There are certain comorbid conditions that overlap with, and also may be confused with, fibromyalgia. Recently there has been improved recognition and understanding of fibromyalgia. Although there are no guidelines for treatment, there is evidence that a multidimensional approach with patient education, cognitive behavior therapy, exercise, physical therapy, and pharmacologic therapy can be effective. Safer than drugs. Doctors don't usually recommend narcotics for treating fibromyalgia because of the potential for dependence and addiction. Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, have not been shown to be effective in treating fibromyalgia either. Other controlled studies have tested the affects of Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Nuprin, Ibuprofen) and found none of them to be more effective than a placebo!

    What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia (say: fi-bro-my-al-gee-uh) is a disorder that causes pain in your muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons. The pain is especially intense when pressure is applied to areas called “tender points.” Common tender points are the back of the head, the elbows, the shoulders, the knees, the hip joints and around the neck.
Fibromyalgia affects around 2% of the population in the United States. This disorder might be hereditary (which means it runs in families), so you may have family members with similar symptoms. More women than men have fibromyalgia. Return to top
