For More Information On FMS-Related Disorders 1. WHAT IS FIBROMYALGIA SYNDROME? Fibromyalgia syndrome (also called "FMS" or "FM") is a complex, chronic condition which causes widespread pain and fatigue, as well as a variety of other symptoms. The name fibromyalgia comes from "fibro" meaning fibrous tissues (such as tendons and ligaments), "my" meaning muscles, and "algia" meaning pain. Unlike arthritis, fibromyalgia does not cause pain or swelling in the joints themselves; rather, it produces pain in the soft tissues located around joints, skin, and organs throughout the body. Because fibromyalgia produces few symptoms that are outwardly noticeable, it has been nicknamed "the invisible disability" or the "irritable everything" syndrome. The pain of fibromyalgia usually consists of diffuse aching or burning described as "head-to-toe", and it is often accompanied by muscle spasm. Its severity varies from day to day and can change location, becoming more severe in parts of the body that are used the most (i.e., the neck, shoulders, and feet). In some people, the pain can be intense enough to interfere greatly with work and ordinary, daily tasks, while in others it causes only mild discomfort. Likewise, the fatigue of fibromyalgia also varies from person to person ranging from a mild, tired feeling to the exhaustion of a flu-like illness. The good news is that FMS is neither crippling nor fatal.

Total: Feed Entries Home Fibromyalgia Syndrome is a chronic pain syndrome characterised by widespread musculoskeletal aches, pain and stiffness, soft tissue tenderness, general fatigue and sleep disturbances. Fibromyalgia patients experience a range of symptoms of varying intensities that wax and wane over time. Within Northern Ireland, it is estimated up to 3% of the population potentially suffer from the condition.
Fibromyalgia Support N. Ireland (FMSNI) is a non-profit making organisation dedicated to providing help and support to Fibromyalgia sufferers and those who care for them. Our mission is to provide an organisation where those with FMS can find understanding, knowledge, support and practical help in fighting the disease.
Our aims are to:
  • Support those with FM, their carers, family and friends To provide up to date information on the condition, research protocols and other relevant material To inform all relevant parties of the difficulties and issues faced by those with FM.

MegaHydrate is the key that unlocks the potential of water as the medium for nutrient replenishment and waste removal at the cellular level. In a state of dehydration, body cells cannot assimilate nutrients and remove waste and relief pain from conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia. Dehydration also occurs as a side effect of caffeine. Caffeine effects include anxiety, dizziness, headaches, sleep disorders, and many common ailments. MegaHydrate also helps fight the negative effects of alcohol, stress, and free radicals as part of aging. In addition to hydration, MegaHydrate is the most powerful known antioxidant food. Since it is an "pure" antioxidant that does not turn into a free radical itself, taken daily, MegaHydrate delivers far more Hydrogen ions than by eating pounds of raw fruits and vegetables or drinking gallons of "healing waters," also known as "glacial milk." Humans need Hydrogen to survive. It is the key to long life and anti-aging. However, due to mass food production, mineral deficient soil, pesticides, chemical fertilizers, over-processing of foods, chemical preservatives, and drinking over-chlorinated and over-fluoridated water, people do not get enough Hydrogen ions daily. Body cells become damaged, hydration levels decrease and cells age. In summary, MegaHydrate challenges the symptoms of dehydration and minimizes the process of aging.

The Chronic Myofascial Pain video is no longer available. NOTE: New Nomenclature All material written by me after October 1, 2007, will have the following changes in nomenclature. I regret any confusion caused by this change, but deem it necessary due to the changes in our current understanding of the conditions involved. The abbreviation for myofascial trigger point, "TrP," is replaced by "MTP." The term Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) will no longer be used, as current research shows it is not a syndrome but a true myopathy, and thus a true disease. There are acute MTPs and chronic myofascial pain (CMP) due to MTPs. Where applicable, CMP will be separated into CMP Stage 1 (without central sensitization) and CMP Stage 2 (with central sensitization).

What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia (say: fi-bro-my-al-gee-uh) is a disorder that causes pain in your muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons. The pain is especially intense when pressure is applied to areas called “tender points.” Common tender points are the back of the head, the elbows, the shoulders, the knees, the hip joints and around the neck.
Fibromyalgia affects around 2% of the population in the United States. This disorder might be hereditary (which means it runs in families), so you may have family members with similar symptoms. More women than men have fibromyalgia. Return to top

Through donations, AFSA supports studies that seek out the causes and treatments for fibromyalgia, which is an extremely painful, fatiguing, and often debilitating medical condition that affects 3-5% of the population. By stepping up research on fibromyalgia, AFSA and its generous contributors are working together to make a substantial difference in the lives of millions. Scientists are currently focusing on abnormalities in the central nervous system that are believed to cause widespread muscular pain, sleep and digestive disorders, chronic headaches, memory and concentration difficulties, and many other body-wide symptoms. Ninety percent of donations to AFSA go directly to fund research.

The Chronic Syndrome Support Association, Inc., is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. It was founded in 1997 in order to educate the general population and health-care professionals who lack current knowledge of the research being done, and potential research that needs to be done, on these serious, yet invisible, Chronic Immunological and Neurological Disorders (CIND) , which include Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS), Gulf War Syndrome (GWS), Multiple Chemical Sensitivities Syndrome (MCS), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME, the term used in most of the world) / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS, the term used in the United States), Chronic Myofascial Pain (CMP), Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) and related illnesses. It is our goal to promote awareness of these illnesses, and in the process we hope to contribute to the growing body of knowledge about them. Learn more about these 'invisible' illnesses in our pamphlet , which can be downloaded in its actual format with Adobe Reader. If you believe you may have one of these illnesses, seek the assistance of a supportive health-care professional who is familiar with CIND and their treatments.

FIBROMYALGIA SYNDROME
As you can tell from the title, this web page is about a condition called Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS/FM/Fibro). I was diagnosed with FMS in 1998; however, I experienced the symptoms a year earlier. My mother and twin sister both deal with this disorder also. It has affected our lives tremendously. We can no longer enjoy shopping, watching movies, taking road trips, and basically enjoying life like we used to (especially anything concerning standing for long periods of time). We still go out and live life, but it usually takes a couple of days to recover. The pain is always worse the day after. Our personalities have definitely changed from being in pain all the time, but we have our own support group at home. We are so lucky to have each other to talk to because the worst part of dealing with Fibromyalgia is the frustration of other people not understanding what you are going through and the kind of pain that is endured. People with this disorder look as though nothing is wrong with them, but they are usually in a great deal of pain that seems to be worse some days and better the next, but it is a continuous struggle that never ends.
