    ABOUT FIJI - CULTURE

In pre-missionary contact years, rituals, elaborate ceremonies, strict observance of customs were part of the Fijian way of life. These cultural traditions have eless survived to the present day, albeit in a more modified form.
Some of the more violent customs such as cannibalism were stopped after the missionaries arrived in Fiji. Human sacrifice was a part of the Fijian ritual in days gone by. For example, when the posts for a temple or chief's house were being set up, live men were put in the holes where the posts were to go - "to hold them up"
The Fiji society is a communal one - with values placed high on the family unit, the village and the vanua (land). People in villages and those in urban areas share the communal obligations and rewards of community life and are led by a hereditary chief.
Hierarchy The Fijian chiefly system follows the Polynesian system where the position is hereditary.

A ccording to Fijian legend, the great chief Lutunasobasoba led his people across the seas to the new land of Fiji . Most authorities agree that people came into the Pacific from Southeast Asia via Indonesia. Here the Melanesians and the Polynesians mixed to create a highly developed society long before the arrival of the Europeans. T he European discoveries of the Fiji group were accidental. The first of these discoveries was made in 1643 by the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman and English navigators, including Captain James Cook who sailed through in 1774, and made further explorations in the 18th century. M ajor credit for the discovery and recording of the islands went to Captain William Bligh who sailed through Fiji after the mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. The first Europeans to land and live among the Fijians were shipwrecked sailors and runaway convicts from the Australian penal settlements. Sandalwood traders and missionaries came by the mid 19th century.

However, it has evolved with the introduction of vibrant and old cultures including Indian, Chinese and European culture, and various cultures from the Pacific neighbors of Fiji; in particular the Tongan and Rotuman cultures. The culture of Fiji, including language, has created a unique communal and national identity.

Although the tropical South Pacific land is normally off the radar screen, this weekend's spotlight is partially on Fiji at Washington's annual gathering of cultures, called the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. This year's festival features the Mexican, Asian Pacific American and Haitian cultures. The occasion gets an extra boost because its closing days fall on the July 4th US independence celebrations.

The Fijians are pretty easy-going, but if you are invited into a village, wear modest clothing and take off your hat (wearing one is an insult to the chief) when in the village. Leave your shoes outside the door when entering a home and keep in mind that it's also insulting to touch someone's head - which can be tempting when you are surrounded by wide-eyed, smiling children. If you are invited to drink kava, don't ask, just enjoy the ritual and the tumb noungue, sorry - the numb tongue. When visiting a village, it is customary to present a gift of kava, which is also known as "yaqona". The gift, (a "sevusevu"), will cost less than F$20 for a half kilo. If you are accompanied by a guide, he/she will look after that. The sevusevu is presented to the traditional head of the village ("Turaga Ni koro"). After it's been pounded into powder and mixed with water, it is usually served in the head person's house. Fijians are the friendliest people in the world. Your respect for their customs and traditions will not only make you a welcome guest in their villages and homes, but add another dimension to your Fijian holiday. For the lovo, meke and yaqona (kava) cermonies.

In the beginning he lived alone, without friends or companions, and the only living creature he knew was Turukawa the hawk. Although the hawk could not speak he was the constant companion of the god. O ne day Degei could not find his friend and looked everywhere for him. Days went by and at last one morning he spied the hawk sitting in some long grass. Gladly, he welcomed the bird but, to his consternation, she ignored Degei and commenced building a nest. Disappointed, he retired to his house and the next day went back to the nest and found two eggs. He then realized the hawk had found a mate and that he had lost her affection. So scooping up the eggs he took them into his own house and kept them warm with his own body. After several weeks of nurturing the eggs and wondering what would happen two shells broke and there were two tiny human bodies. D egei built them a shelter in a vesi tree and fed them on scraps of food. They grew quickly, but there was nobody to teach them except Degei. He did not understand children but when they were hungry he fed them and to save himself work he planted banana trees and root crops close to them. He also talked to them and told them about the secrets of nature. Eventually the children were fully grown and all this time had been unaware of each other's presence as Degei had placed them on opposite sides of the tree.

    Fiji : Culture
Fiji's mixed racial background contributes to a valuable cultural heritage. Many features of orthodox Fijian life survive; they are most noticeable in the elaborate investiture, marriage, and other ceremonies for high-ranking chiefs. These ceremonies offer a focus for the practicing of orthodox crafts, such as the manufacture of masi, or tapa cloth, made from the bark of the paper mulberry; mat weaving; wood carving; and canoe making. Drinking of yanggona (kava, made from the root of Piper methysticum) is a part not only of valuable ceremonies but also of everyday life. Displays of orthodox Fijian culture, music, and dancing make an valuable contribution to tourism; model villages and handicraft markets are popular. Most Indian women continue to wear the sari together with orthodox jewelry in gold and silver. orthodox marriage ceremonies are practiced, as are customs such as fire walking and ritual self-torture as part of valuable religious ceremonies. Cinemas showing imported Indian films are popular. Diwali, the Hindu Festival of the Lights, is celebrated every October and is a public holiday. Fijian culture is more closely related to that of the Polynesians. Indians, whose ancestors were brought between 1879 and 1916 to work on British plantations in Fiji, comprise about 45 % of the population. The remainder consists of Europeans, Chinese, other Pacific Islanders, and people of mixed ethnicity. About 52 % of the people are Christians, with Methodists and Roman Catholics forming the largest groups. Hindus comprise 39 % of the population, and Muslims, 8 %.
