Fiji Culture
Relationships between ethnic Fijians and Indo-Fijians at a political level have often been strained, and the tension between the two communities has dominated politics in the islands for the past generation, though the level of tension varies between different regions of the country. Displays of “traditional” Fijian culture, music, and dancing make an important contribution to tourism; model villages and handicraft markets are popular with tourists. A traditional song-and-dance performance, the meke, is rooted in storytelling traditions. In its strictest form, the meke involves chanting by shamans, whose bodies take on spirits of the netherworld, accompanied by dancing, rhythmic clapping, and the beating of slit drums. The indigenous culture is very much active and living, and is a part of everyday life for the majority of the population. However, it has evolved with the introduction of vibrant and old cultures like the Indian and Chinese ones, as well as a large influence from Europe, and from various Pacific neighbors of Fiji, mainly the Tongan and Rotuman. The culture of Fiji has created a unique communal and national identity. Looking for more detailed information? Click on the topics below:

People of Fiji The population of Fiji consists of a mixture of people from diverse backgrounds. While 50 percent of the population belongs to the Melanesian ethnic group, around 45 percent is made up of Indians, whose ancestors worked on British plantations between the years 1879 and 1916. The remaining 5 percent is made up of Europeans, Chinese and other Pacific Islanders. Majority of the people follow Christianity, while 33 percent are Hindus and 7 percent are Muslims. Though Fijian is spoken among native people, English is spoken by almost everyone and the Indians mainly converse in Hindi.
Flag of Fiji The flag of Fiji is light blue, with the flag of the UK in the upper hoist-side quadrant and the Fijian shield centered on the outer half of the flag. The shield depicts a yellow lion above a white field quartered by the cross of Saint George featuring stalks of sugarcane, a palm tree, bananas, and a white dove.

A simple walk around the beach resort will allow you to see native Fijian handicraft decorations. All of Matangi's Fiji style bures are decorated with traditional crafts. Resort guests are invited to participate in cultural activities as a part of their holiday. Experience a traditional Fijian kava ceremony, visit a village on a neighboring island, or enjoy local Fijian musical groups who perform at the resort.
Yaqona, kava drinking ceremonies As a guest in Fiji, you will frequently be invited to participate in one of the most common ceremonial and social customs in the islands, the Kava Ceremony. The drinking of kava, or Yaqona, is quite common on social occasions. It is regarded in Fiji as "the National Drink". In the past, Yagona was drunk only by chiefs. Kava is made from the bare root of a pepper tree, pounded into a fine powder and then mixed with fresh water. Near Matangi Island, the family grows and exports kava root to the United States and Europe for use in homeopathic drugs and over-the-counter pills to aid in relaxation.

Fiji Culture
I ndigenous Fijians lived a very different lifestyle before Christianity was introduced. W hilst Fiji was under British rule however, the chiefly system and village structure was still upheld, this was partly due to laws protecting Fijian land rights. T here are still a lot of villages today, with the chief being the head of the village. Many indigenous Fijians work, especially in the hotels and resorts whilst Indo-Fijians work in the major business centres. Indigenous and Indo Fijians try to uphold and retain their religious beliefs within their community but as more move away for work this becomes difficult. T he following points will help while you are travelling in Fiji to avoid any cultural misunderstandings or offending anyone unintentionally. I f you are travelling with children, Fijians will appreciate you keeping the children quiet and polite. F ijian's dress very conservatively. If you are in a resort, it is fine to be in bathers and not much else but if you are in a village or other areas, it is respectful to cover your shoulders and knees.

CULTURE Most Indian women continue to wear the sari together with traditional jewelry in gold and silver. Traditional marriage ceremonies are practiced, as are customs such as fire walking and ritual self-torture as part of important religious ceremonies. Cinemas showing imported Indian films are popular. Diwali, the Hindu Festival of the Lights, is celebrated every October and is a public holiday. Fijian culture is more closely related to that of the Polynesians. Indians, whose ancestors were brought between 1879 and 1916 to work on British plantations in Fiji, comprise about 45 percent of the population. The remainder consists of Europeans, Chinese, other Pacific Islanders, and people of mixed ethnicity. About 52 percent of the people are Christians, with Methodists and Roman Catholics forming the largest groups. Hindus comprise 39 percent of the population, and Muslims, 8 percent.

Fiji Culture Overview
Fijian culture is a blend of Melanesian and Polynesian backgrounds, although Fiji is also influenced by other vibrant cultures, including Chinese, Indian, European and other South Pacific cultures, particularly Rotuman and Tongan. Indigenous Fijian culture is made up of a great variety of traditional language, art, music, food, clothing and folklore. This culture also gives high importance to the family unit. You can experience traditional Fijian culture at its best by visiting the quaint villages on these islands.
Family values in Fiji
Traditional Fijian culture highly regards the family unit, the village and the land (or vanua). Villages, tribes and clans are led by a chief. The position of chief is inherited; when a chief dies, a male family member takes his place, though it does not necessarily have to be his son. The largest social unit in Fiji is known as a yavusa, from which the members are thought of as the direct descendents. Each brother in a family then forms his own branch of yavusa, which is called the mataqali. The mataqali consists of different levels, which are based upon the duty performed by the member:

Fiji Culture – A Brief History of Fiji It’s hard to believe that a place as tranquil and quiet as Fiji has such an exciting history. But the truth is that Fiji’s history has enough drama in it to interest even the most reluctant student. It’s filled with intrigue, conflict, oppression, and triumph. Fiji culture slowly adapted to its surroundings until it became a unique, distinct culture of its own. And, along the way, other people came to the island and affected its culture, which helped to shape the people of Fiji into the warm, vibrant, and hospitable people that make Fiji such a wonderful place to visit today. Archaeologists estimate that Melanesian people first arrived in Fiji around 3,500 years ago, based on shards of pottery and other artifacts that have been found around the island. The Sigatoka Sand Dunes are a veritable treasure trove of ancient Melanesian artifacts. The people who are considered ethnic Fijians are descended from these ancient Melanesians and have largely retained the same appearance as their forefathers, making it difficult for foreigners to distinguish between Fijians and other Pacific Islanders of Melanesian heritage. A small minority of ethnic Fijians also have Polynesian blood as well. There is a woman living in the town of Levuka on the island of Ovalau. Her name is Bubu Kara, and she is directly descended from Silinatoba Saurara, the second Fijian man ever to arrive in Fiji. She can recite the tale of the

Want To Know More About The Fiji Culture?
The Fiji culture is a colourful nation filled with a mix of music, dance, family, food, craft and their love for sport, especially rugby. The majority of the population is a mix of Indigenous Fijian, and Indian but Fiji also has a small Chinese population which is more prominent in the capital Suva. The two main ethnic groups live relatively separately because of their different religious and cultural beliefs which are hard to blend together. Often they have specific Fijian or Indian villages each with their own primary schools but they tend to mix more as they become older, at high school and especially in the working environment. This musical nation is bought together by singing, you often hear the lovely sound of their songs echoing around the villages. The people also have strong religious beliefs, the ceremonies influenced by music and singing. Church is an important weekly event, families including very small children can be seen walking for miles to attend, dressed in their best Sunday attire.
The Fijian food is a fusion of flavours of both the cultures, the coconut and root vegetables of the Fijians and the spices and curries of the Indians. When you visit the local market you can smell the lovely aroma of the Indian spices and you will see the unique way they sell these goods.
