    Fiji Geography
Fiji comprises a group of volcanic islands in the South Pacific lying about 4,450 km. (2,775 mi.) southwest of Honolulu and 1,770 km. (1,100 mi.) north of New Zealand. Its 322 islands range in size from the largeViti Levu (about the size of the "Big Island" of Hawaii, and where Suva and 70% of the population are located) and Vanua Levuto much smaller islands, of which just over 100 are inhabited. The larger islands contain mountains as high as 1,200 meters (4,000 ft.) rising abruptly from the shore. Heavy rainsup to 304 cm. (120 in.) annuallyfall on the windward (southeastern) side, covering these sections of the islands with dense tropical forest. Lowlands on the western portions of each of the main islands are sheltered by the mountains and have a well-marked dry season favorable to crops such as sugarcane.

Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). A 1990 constitution favored native Melanesian control of Fiji, but led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. Amendments enacted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a coup in May 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil. Parliamentary elections held in August 2001 provided Fiji with a democratically elected government and gave a mandate to the government of Prime Minister Laisenia QARASE. The rainforests around the main island of Viti Levu is home to many exotic tropical birds especially along Coral Coast and the Pacific Harbour. The large island of Kadavu, which also has dense rainforests, has several amazing birds such as musk parrots and the colorful Honeyeaters and enchanting Fantails. To the north is Taveuni, which is another site of rich birdlife featuring different parrots and the playful lorikeets. In the neighboring island of Vanua Levu are the endangered Silktail, which is endemic to the forests in the area. Several small islands are now declared as Nature and Bird Reserves including the Namenalala Island, the Mabualau Island and the Bird Island. Fiji wildlife features few natural land animals.
