Fiji or the Republic of the Fiji Islands is a country that is made up of 320 islands. Among these islands, 110 are home to human population. The island nation of Fiji is spread across a total area of about 18,376 square kilometers. The Fiji geography is a bit special in a sense that the 180 degree meridian line running across the country has made it one of those countries which experience the rays of the morning sun before others. The local time of Fiji is calculated by adding 12 hours to the Greenwich Mean Time. Travelers are always interested in getting a Fiji overview. Fiji travel guide gives us a deeper insight of the Fiji geography. Let's have a brief idea of the Fiji geography.

Fiji: Geography
Fiji consists of approximately 300 islands ranging from coral atolls to high-rise sub-continental land masses, about 100 of which are populated. Viti Levu, with the capital located on the eastern end at Suva, is the main island and also the site of the international airport on the western end at Nadi [sometimes written Nandi]. Vanua Levu is the second largest island, but beyond the urban centers on Viti Levu, it and most other islands in the country are relatively undeveloped. Fiji has a land mass of 18,270 sq. km. It is slightly smaller than New Jersey. Its two main islands are categorized as sub-continental, and have vast tropical forests and even a gold mine, contrasting with other Polynesian islands which typically have few natural resources beyond tropical forests and the sea. Fiji Geography
The Fiji islands are a result of volcanic action, sedimentary deposit, and formations of coral. Viti Levu has an area of about 4,000 square miles (10,000 square km) and accounts for more than half of Fiji’s land area. Fiji consists of 322 islands (106 are inhabited) and 522 smaller islets. The two most important islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. The islands are mountainous, with peaks up to 1,300 meters (4,250 ft), and covered with tropical forests. Most of the islands, including the Lomaiviti, Lau, and Yasawa groups, are volcanic in origin, and, like Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, are bound by coral reefs, offshore rocks, and shoals that make the Koro Sea hazardous for navigation. The climate in Fiji is tropical and warm most of the year. All the islands receive the greatest amount of rainfall between November and March, during which time tropical cyclones are also experienced perhaps once every two years. While the rain diminishes in the east between from April to October, it virtually ceases in the west, making for a sharp contrast in both climate and agriculture. Fiji Geography
T he Island nation of Fiji is located in the South Western Pacific in the Tropics of the Southern Hemisphere. ( About 3000 km North-East of Australia) Midway between Vanuatu and Tonga, Fiji's 320 Islands are scattered between the Latitudes of 12 and 21 degrees South of the Equator and Longitude of 177 degrees East to 178 degrees west. This results in the 180 degrees Meridian cutting directly through the middle of the Islands. To eliminate having two time zones, the International Date Line detours to the East so all of Fiji's Islands are on one time zone and 12 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). M ost of Fiji's Islands were formed by volcanic events starting around 150 million years ago and there is still some geothermal activity on the islands of Vanua Levu and Taveuni. The main island of Viti Levu is the largest and oldest island in the group with the major proportion of Fiji's 826,000 people living here.(as of 2002) Much of Viti Levu's interior consists of highlands and mountain ranges which includes Mt Tomanivi - Fiji's highest peak at 1300 metres high. These ranges separate Eastern Viti Levu and the Capital City of Suva from the Western side where Nadi, The International Airport and most of the Island Resorts are located. A voiding the mountainous Interior, the main highway transport routes of Queens and Kings Road follow the coastline (which is flatter) and together, the two completely encircle the Island.

Red, pink, blue, green, purple and orangeall can be found in a box of crayons. Do you have a favorite color? Maybe you have several favorite colors. Now imagineif you cana place in the world where you can find every color you can imagine. That place is a group of islands called Fiji.
Fiji is a group of more than 300 islands in the South Pacific Ocean. They were created by volcanoes a very long time ago. Fiji's weather is almost always comfortable. It is almost never too hot or too cold in Fiji. That's one of the reasons why people from all over the world love to take vacations there. Another reason is all the color in Fiji. But the color isn't very easy to find. In fact, you'd get very wet finding the prettiest colors in Fiji. That's because they are underwater!
Beautiful underwater plants called coral can be found all around Fiji. Coral are like underwater flowers. They can be found in almost any color you can imagine! And sometimes coral is colored like nothing you've seen before! In fact, a famous diver called Fiji's coral "a touch of heaven."

Fiji s location and size The Fiji Islands are located in the Southern Hemisphere, surrounded by the South Pacific Ocean. What is unique about Fijis location is that even though the 180th degree meridian line cuts right through the Fijian archipelago, the International Date Line goes around it to the east, so that all islands can share the same date. Fiji is one of the first countries to experience a new calendar day. Fiji lies 5,100 km (3,169 miles) southwest of Hawaii and 3,150 km (1,957 miles) northeast of Sydney. Its exact geographic location is at latitude 15-22 degrees south and 177 degrees west to 175 degrees east.

Fiji Geography – Number of Islands When people hear Fiji referred to as an “island nation,” some assume that this means that Fiji is a small island. In actuality, it is a group of many islands bound together under a common culture, history, and government to form a single, united nation. Fiji boasts 322 islands and 522 small islets. Of the 322 large islands, only 106 are inhabited. While every island or islet that comprises Fiji is a unique gem of the Pacific, there are several islands of Fiji that stand out a bit from the rest. These islands are the “must-sees” of Fiji geography.According to Fiji geography, the island of Viti Levu is the largest of the nation. Viti Levu is also home to Suva, the nation’s capital city, and Nida, home to Fiji’s international airport. As Fiji’s largest and most important island, Viti Levu also houses some of the most interesting sights that Fiji has to offer. Aside from its museums, traditional villages, and pristine beaches, you can also find a large Hindu temple in Nadi, the tomb of an infamous cannibal chief in Rakiraki, and various outdoor activities, including hiking through the rainforest and watersports. After all, a visit to Fiji wouldn’t be complete without a romp in its waters. Matagi Island is an interesting part of Fiji geography. This extinct volcano has been eroded away until its enormous crater fell in on one side and formed the breathtaking Horseshoe Bay. The island of Matagi was privately owned for many years before its owners agreed to allow a resort to be built here. Now, Matagi is a premier spot in Fiji for windsurfing, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, and water-skiing. Add in the fact that all of these activities take place against the stunning backdrop of this ancient, extinct volcano and this trip to Matagi Island is sure to be unforgettable. Few places in Fiji geography are more fascinating than the Yasawa Islands.
