Fiji Government misrepresents human rights record to UN: Amnesty International
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PRESS RELEASE , ISSUED UNDER STRICT EMBARGO 00:01 GMT Wednesday 10 February 2010The Fiji Government has misrepresented its human rights record in a report to the United Nations, Amnesty International said today.
    Amnesty International disputes
The Public Emergency Regulations (PER) which came into force in April 2009, have enabled the government to violate key human rights, while ensuring impunity for those committing these violations. Amnesty International maintains that the interim government has applied the PER to protect itself from any criticism or dissent and to suppress any comment or news item that may be critical of the government or the security forces.
As recently as January 2010, senior officials in the Fiji military have openly threatened critics and dissidents. The government has also begun terminating benefits to pensioners who have been critical of the regime, violating their rights to freedom of speech and social security.
Amnesty International urges the Human Rights Council to conduct a rigorous examination of Fiji's fulfilment of its human rights obligations and commitments and to call for practical measures aimed at addressing serious shortcomings.

Fiji Government urged to intensify HIV and AIDS efforts
The Fiji Government has been urged to re-double its efforts in the fight against HIV and AIDS now or pay dearly later. The call from UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS , comes after Fiji's Ministry of Health released figures showing an increase in the number of people living with HIV and AIDS UNAIDS Pacific Programme Coordinator, Stuart Watson said because the overall HIV prevalence rates remain low in the Pacific the sense of urgency for action has yet to reach fever pitch.
"Numbers do not lie and AIDS in the Pacific is fast approaching a critical tipping point" he said in a statement. Watson said HIV and AIDS will have a serious political and socio economic impact on Fiji, but leadership commitment and swift action can make a great difference. "We have the skill and science needed to stop AIDS , but what we need now is the political will, the strategy and the unity to turn the tide. I say this now because there is a proven relationship between political and economic upheavals and the increase in the number of people being infected," said Watson.

    About Fiji Government
On October 10, 1970, after 96 years of British rule, Fiji ceased to be a British Crown Colony. On that day independence was granted and Fiji became a self-governing nation within the Commonwealth. Soon after the 1987 military coups, Fiji was declared a Republic. It re-entered the Commonwealth in 1997.
Under the current political set up, the President is the Head of State with the Prime Minister as the head of Government. Fiji's constitution provides for a bicameral parliament, comprising the President, an elected House of Representatives with 1 members, and a nominated Senate that has 32 members.
Under the current Government, the country is divided into four districts for administration purposes, Central, based in Nausori, Eastern, based in Levuka, Northern based in Labasa and Western based in Lautoka. Each of these administrative centers have jurisdiction over the various provinces that came within each district division. There are 14 provinces in total, each governed by a council which has an executive head appointed by the Fijian Affairs Board (FAB). City and town councils generally administer urban affairs.

Topics: World Ana Tudrau-Tamani - AHN Fiji Correspondent Suva, Fiji (AHN) - The Fiji Government's initiative to put in place a housing assistance grant worth $10 million for the construction of new individual homes wasapplauded by economics and business experts. Professor of Economics and Dean at the University of the South Pacific's Faculty of Business and Economics Biman Chand Prasad said the move is definitely a good one. To do this, government will for the first time, collaborate with the private sector and commercial banks in this regard. According to the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, this housing assistance grant shall be available to those families or individuals who want to construct their first house and who meet the commercial bank loan serviceability requirements can substantially contribute towards the 20 percent deposit requirement but do not have enough funds to meet the total deposit requirements. Each successful applicant will be given a maximum of $10,000 and that would mean that 1,000 families can benefit from this scheme, he said.

    Fiji Government
Fiji Government was formed in 1970, when the country gained independence from Britain. Fiji inherited a parliamentary democracy. It was interrupted when a military regime was established in 1987 followed by two coups under the leadership of Sitiveni Rabuka. In 1992 again an elected government cams to power.
Being failed to pass a budget for 1994 the Fiji Government fell in November 1993. the government of Prime Minister Rabuka returned to power in 1994 after a general election. The Constitution was reviewed by this new Government of Fiji in 1995.
As a result a new broadly accepted Constitution came into effect in July 1998. Since all the parties took part in this review this new Constitution was created after a good consultation among the Fiji people. This process also assured political and economic stability of Fiji.
In May 1999 election was held under the new Constitution. Surprisingly enough the Labor Party won the election. Mahendra Chaudhry, an Indo-Fijian became the Prime Minister. This new Government in Fiji was formed after peaceful transition of power.
The President is the head of state while the Prime Minister is head of Fiji Government . The parliament is comprised of the President, an elected House of Representatives with 1 member and a nominated Senate with 32 members.

    Court rules Fiji government illegal
By Campbell Cooney for Radio Australia Posted April 9, 2009 14:10:00
Updated April 9, 2009 14:50:00 Interim prime minister Frank Bainimarama has been in power since 2007. (Reuters: Tim Wimborne) Fiji's Court of Appeal has found the interim military government of Commodore Frank Bainimarama is illegal. The Appeal Court has ordered the president to dissolve parliament and appoint a caretaker interim prime minister. Today's finding overturns a ruling by the country's High Court last year that the interim government was legal and that the president of Fiji had prerogative powers to establish it. But the former prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, appealed that ruling in the latest landmark case before three judges. The Attorney-General asked the court to delay the latest decision until the Supreme Court could decide the matter. Legal argument was still being heard on Thursday afternoon.

Fiji government yields to bottled water company pressure
Posted on26 July 2008. Tags: BBC bottled water Fiji water A proposed tax on bottled water in Fiji has been scrapped following pressure by an industry lobby group on the island. The interim Fijian government repealed its 20 cents per litre tax on bottled water following the factory closure of Fiji Water, the last of the bottled water companies to stop operations after the cabinet introduced the new taxation system. Bottled water companies on the South Pacific island have welcomed the move. According to Fiji One News, the Fiji Bottled Water Institute, which represents nine companies, has said that consultations need to be held first on any future tax proposals before they are implemented. Industry spokesman Jay Dayal said, “We are very pleased that at least the prime minister and attorney general intervened in the matter and resolved the whole issue. And now the bottlers will get together with the government and work out a form of compensation that is suitable to the government for the resource that we are extracting.” Last year bottled water exports from Fiji counted for around $130 million, in an industry employing more than 700 people.
