Questioning the role of art as pure commodity and insisting on its responsibility to examine society’s dangerous interweaving of ideas of freedom with violence, the group’s work uses neon, video, sculpture, painting and text to send strong messages and urgent queries and borrows the visual language of advertising, nation building and other recognisable systems to express the conflicted desires the marketplace encourages. There is no future, there is no past. Thank God this moment's not the last! There's only us, there's only this. Forget regret or life is yours to miss. No other road, no other way, no day but today. Will I lose my dignity? Will someone care? Will I wake tomorrow from this nightmare? There's only now, there's only here, give into love or live in fear. No other path, no other way, no day but today. ~ Taken from "Rent," Finale As Filipino Americans in today's diverse society, we must take proactive measures to empower ourselves in the new millennium. The best way of grasping the past and determining the future is by taking control of the present. We must act now; make change beginning today, not tomorrow, not someday today.
Change can start with one person you. There is no better time than now to be introspective and to become aware of the multi-faceted issues that affect us as Filipino Americans.
The MAFA 2000 student conference will challenge our preconceived notions regarding the complexity of being Filipino Americans in today's society. Workshops and forums will equip us with the resources, knowledge, and understanding necessary to make a positive impact today and in the future.
Make a difference no day but today.

Eddy Badrina, Executive Director of the White House Initiative on AAPIs Said that he is proud of the President's continued commitment to addressing The needs of the Asian American and Pacific Islanders. "The President has selected a diverse and talented group of individuals to provide him with recommendations," said Badrina. The Commission will be chaired by Betty B. Wu (NY) and composed of the following members:

Filipinos Writing in the United States
T he key question for Filipino writers and critiques is how to retrieve (or gain for the first time) their "lost" and "unified" identity. The umbrella term "Asian-American" seems fallacious to those writers (e.g. Carlos Bulosan, José García Villa, Bienvenido Santos, and N.V.M Gonzalez) who migrated to the United States during the first part of the century. Villa was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 1943, and Carlos Bulosan's America is in the Heart (1946) continues to hold weight in literary discussions on Filipino American identity today. "I tell you to wait for the inevitable war/Of armies and idealogies, and the enduring love./In our time when every man must lie for life,/Nothing will survive but this historic truth," writes Bulosan in "Last Will and Testament" (Evangelista 150). For these writers, the United States is a place of
