MAIN NEWS Year 39, # 46 October 22 - 28, 2010 Filipina Madoff out on bail pending trial
Rachel Canedo A New York Cebuana denounced by her numerous alleged victims as the Filipino Bernie Madoff — reportedly for preying on Filipino immigrants in a million-dollar Ponzi or pyramid scheme — won temporary freedom after posting $1 million bail pending her trial. Razel Canedo, 42, — who also uses the aliases Razel Torres and Razel Agravante, and allegedly sold promissory notes to unsuspecting victims by suggesting the proceeds would be used to pay immigration expenses of nurses and nannies from the Philippines who wanted to work in the United States — was arrested in Atlantic City, N.J., early this year after taking more than $1 million from dozens of people. She was charged with pending felony counts of frauds and swindles, and wire fraud. According to the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York, Canedo posted a $1 million personal recognizance bond on Sept. 24, after spending eight months behind bars. The bond, co-signed by Canedo's mother and sister, was approved by U.S. District Judge Barbara S. Jones.

How Research Helps Address Gender Equity
by Jane Butler Kahle and Arta Damnjanovic, Miami University, Oxford, OH 45056 Introduction Early Science Experience Research at the University of Minnesota suggests that boys and girls learn socially appropriate behavior by 24 to 26 months of age. At that time, male and female stereotypes are set, and boys, more than girls, define what they will and will not do. Similar sex-stereotypic behaviors are revealed in very young science students. In one study, for example, kindergarten children were interviewed three weeks after they entered school. At that age, neither boys nor girls were able to define science, but even without that knowledge more boys than girls replied that they wanted to be scientists, that they were good in science, and that they had done science. The importance of these attitudes is reflected in the hypothesis that sex differences in course taking patterns are established as early as kindergarten. Science Education for Girls of Color Recent research has focused on the scientific education for girls of color. This area of investigation has been hampered by the limited availability of data disaggregated by sex and racial/ethnic group. The few studies that have been performed suggest that in some racial/ethnic groups, gender differences in achievement, interest, and attitudes favor girls, not boys.

Program Description
The Filipino and Filipino American Studies Minor serves several purposes. First, this minor strengthens the study of Asian civilizations and U.S. ethnic minority groups at Cal State Hayward by focusing on Filipinos and Filipino Americans. Second, students interested in taking courses related to Filipino and Filipino American experiences will be able to count these courses toward a minor. Third, the minor provides a foundation of cultural and social knowledge for students who plan to take business courses which deal with Filipino American communities and/or who plan to participate in international student exchanges with universities in the Philippines. Currently, students may participate in exchange programs between Cal State Hayward and selected universities in the Philippines such as De La Salle University, University of Northern Philippines, Silliman University, and the University of the Philippines (Diliman).

    Abstract
Objective To evaluate the usefulness of screening measures to detect social phobia among youth in a primary care setting. Methods Families recruited from a pediatric primary care setting completed by mail the Social Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Social Worries Questionnaire (SWQ), and the social phobia subscale of the Screen for Child Related Anxiety Disorders (SCARED). Diagnoses were obtained from 190 parent interviews. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were used to determine the utility of the measures as screening instruments. Results Most of the parent report measures, including the single item (“My child is shy”) from the SCARED, were at least moderately accurate screeners and performed best for the generalized subtype of social phobia.
