Filipino American History Month - October 2010 Upcoming Events: The Chinese Historical Society of Southern California (CHSSC) and the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) Los Angeles Chapter cordially invite you to attend: "The Story of Tsinoys: Chinese in the Philippines" Guest Speaker: Susie Ling Wednesday, October 6, 2010 7:00 pm Chinatown's Castelar School 840 Yale Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012 (Free parking on basketball court. Enter via College Street.) Did you know about 20% of Filipinos have some Chinese ancestry? President Corazon Aquino, Cardinal Jaime Sin, and national hero Jose Rizal are some of the more famous "Tsinoys", or Chinese Filipinos. As the Philippines is so close to Fujian province, Chinese influence in Filipino culture dates back centuries and is as ubiquitous as pancit and lumpia. The first Spanish-established Chinatown was the Parian, which later became Binondo. These Chinatowns survive through massacres, revolutions, wars, and martial law.

We started this feature mainly to come up with role models for Fil-Americans specially to our youth. We've been called an invisible minority because we tried to assimilate to the American main stream as quickly as we can. We're hoping that by this feature, we can showcase that Fil-Ams too are as successful as other minorities and capable of achieving more.
