    Updated 28 October 2010
    Why Fingerprint Identification?
Fingerprints offer an infallible means of personal identification. That is the essential explanation for their having supplanted other methods of establishing the identities of criminals reluctant to admit previous arrests. The science of fingerprint Identification stands out among all other forensic sciences for many reasons, including the following:
    • Has served all governments worldwide during the past 100 years to provide accurate identification of criminals. No two fingerprints have ever been found alike in many billions of human and automated computer comparisons. Fingerprints are the very basis for criminal history foundation at every police agency on earth.
    • Established the first forensic professional organization, the International Association for Identification (IAI), in 1915.
    • Established the first professional certification program for forensic scientists, the IAI's Certified Latent Print Examiner program (in 1977), issuing certification to those meeting stringent criteria and revoking certification for serious errors such as erroneous identifications.

    Live Scan Fingerprinting
A notary public is a state officer and pubic official whose designated acts are essential to the smooth running of our administrative and legal operations. Fingerprinting is often used by notaries when acknowledging that a person has proved his or her identity. Fingerprint impressions taken by a Notary Public are often required for legal documents, background checks, and employment purposes.
Mobile notaries are notaries public who travel to perform their duties, often including the taking of fingerprints. Many notaries have been trained by expert law enforcement fingerprinters and have received certification from the state or county they serve in. Mobile Notaries handle your fingerprinting needs at the place and time of your convenience.
Live scan fingerprinting is the process of taking fingerprints digitally on a computer without using ink. The digitized prints are transmitted to the appropriate government agency and a criminal background check is completed. It has modernized the science of taking fingerprints. The automated Live Scan Fingerprinting process can be completed within 72 hours.

Fingerprinting The Clay County Sheriff's Office provides two types of fingerprinting services.
First, the Clay County Sheriff's Office provides a fingerprinting service to the public for a fee of just $5 (cash or money order only; no checks or credit cards accepted). Residents interested in having fingerprints made (at the request of the potential employer) must bring with him/her the fingerprint card provided by the prospective employer. The CCSO does not provide these cards. Do not fill out any portion of this card in advance. Our clerks will type the card for you. This type of fingerprinting is done in the main Green Cove Springs office lobby between the hours of 8am-11am and again from 2pm-4:30pm, Monday through Friday. This service is not available at the other CCSO locations, i.e. Middleburg, Keystone, or Orange Park. If you have questions related to this service, call the front lobby receptionist at (904) 213-5904. Second, the Clay County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post or the CCSO VIPS Program members can provide fingerprinting kits for children at community events. Please contact the Explorer Post advisor, Deputy John Jordan, for more information by having him paged at (904) 264-6512. These fingerprinting kits are used by law enforcement in situations where a child has been abducted or is missing.
