Finnish culture lures foreign workers to Nokia Corp
Gautam Naik Helsinki: In the global war for high-tech talent, Nokia Corp. hasn't had it easy. The mobile-telephone maker's headquarters here are 520 miles south of the Arctic Circle and half a world away from Silicon Valley. Potential foreign recruits usually know little about Finland. Many assume it's part of Russia. Some are surprised to learn that Nokia isn't a Japanese company. But when a Nokia recruiter approached Raam Kumar, a software engineer raised in a small town in India where some of his neighbours lived in mud huts, he was wowed by the Finns' strong position in the global market for mobile phones. And he loved the month's vacation- far more than he was likely to get at a US firm. While other European countries, such as Germany, succumb to ugly political debates about work permits for foreigners, Finland is attracting large numbers of technology whizzes from India, China and other developing countries. One big reason: Finland makes it relatively easy for skilled workers to get work visas. Another is Finnish benefits - a generous social-security programme, long vacations - are available to all hires. So far, voters haven't turned xenophobic. "If someone wants to give their knowledge to Finland and we can use it, why shouldn't we let them work here?" says Haikki Taskinnen, head of immigration at Finland's Ministry of Interior.

Identification. C.E. ) Roman references to people known as Fenni (probably Lapps or Saami) who occupied lands north of the Baltic Sea. In their own language, Finns generally refer to themselves as Suomalaiset and their land or country as Suomi , which may derive from suo , the Finnish expression for a bog or swamp. Finns constitute the majority of the citizens of the Republic of Finland, which has a Swedish-speaking minority as well as Saami (Lapp) and Rom (Gypsy) minorities. While language was a highly divisive issue as late as the 1920s and 1930s, many Finnish speakers now recognize the value of Swedish for communicating with other Nordic countries. A distinction between urban, industrialized, coastal southwestern Finland and the rural interior northeast is an important historical and regional division in terms of culture and identity. However, socialist versus nonsocialist affiliations are more meaningful at the political level. Despite these distinctions, most citizens strongly believe that they share a common culture and heritage.

Finnish culture...
It's not all that often that we encounter things from Finland here in Portland. So imagine my surprise when we're on our way to our weekly date-night with Tove, and our baby-sitter is gushing about this adorable and wonderful Finnish YouTube video.. She apparently have been watching it three or four times a day for the last few days (weeks?), laughing hysterically.
"I Want to Love You Tender"
, which has apparently been a big hit on youtube for several years now.
Now, people who aren't from Finland may not realize the whole depth of that video. To an outsider, it may look like some highschool musical number with particularly inept dancing. It's funny, yes, but you go on to watch keyboard cat and dramatic chipmunk.
But to somebody from Finland, the first reaction is "I recognize that tune". The second reaction is "Oh, it's them !". That's not some inept highschool musical number, that's one of the most beloved Finnish entertainers ever ! Ok, so the version you hear in Finland is in Finnish, and the above is the English version - and Finns back in the seventies weren't really all that good at English. That explains some of it.

When I grew up, the Swedes had ABBA and Björn Borg. The Finns had Armi ja Danny. Really.
