Finnish Language Studies
During their Finnish studies students are trained to become language professionals: they learn to deal with Finnish expertly and they develop a broad, scientific insight into language, its significance to humankind and its position in culture and society. The wide choice of courses offered makes it possible for students to concentrate on the theories or methodologies and the topics they consider to be important.
Curriculum
Modern Finnish is the result of a long process of development, and so the study of Finnish naturally includes the history of its phonology, grammar and vocabulary, and the shaping of written Finnish into its present form. In addition, students are acquainted with the different approaches to the grammar of Modern Finnish; they are introduced to semantic analysis; and they study different aspects of spoken interaction and its role in understanding and interpreting expressions. The courses offered aim at giving a picture of how language varies according to the situations in which it is being used. A professional in Finnish must also be able to explain about language use to others and to correct errors and improve the style of texts, as well as justify these changes. No clear-cut specialisations are offered in Finnish Language studies. Instead, the options provided help students to concentrate on the topics and approaches that they consider to be important.

    Finnish language
Finnish language, also called Suomi, member of the Finnic group of the Finno-Ugric languages . These languages form a subdivision of the Uralic subfamily of the Ural-Altaic family of languages (see Uralic and Altaic languages ). Finnish is spoken by about 5 million people in Finland. Additional speakers totaling close to 1 million live in neighboring areas of Sweden and Russia and also in the United States. There are several dialects. In Finnish the first syllable of a word is stressed. The language has 15 cases for nouns, personal pronouns, and adjectives. It lacks grammatical gender and the article. There is a negative conjugation for the verb. Like the other Uralic and Altaic languages, Finnish has vowel harmony and agglutination. Postpositions are employed instead of prepositions. Suffixation is used to form derived nouns and verbs. The Finnish vocabulary has been enriched by words borrowed from the Germanic, Slavic, and Baltic languages. A modified Roman alphabet is used for writing Finnish, which has been recorded since the 16th cent. See F. Karlsson

Speak Finnish
like a restless native! Oh, that crazy Finnish language!
What do Santa Claus, saunas, suicides, IRC, ammonium chloride, vowels with lots of cute dots on them, reindeer, Nokia cell phones, and gold-medalist ski jumpers who have recently turned into porn stars all have in common? That's right they're all Finnish! Who needs sexist languages such as English when Finnish provides the gender-neutral word , which translates as "he or she"? Finnish (or Suomi ) is also a much more compact language than English:
You will be able to have some of my apples = Saat omenoitani. Perhaps not surpsisingly, Finnish is not related to any of the Indo-European languages. Hungarian, Estonian, and Sami (Laplander) are some of its closest living relatives. Impress your friends at parties with Finnish linguistic trivia! Here is a collection of indispensable phrases to use (and not to use!) while mingling with the restless natives during your travels though Finland, from Hanko to Ivalo! The basics Hello!

Welcome to the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Columbia University! The department, recognized as one of the very best in the country, offers a variety of language and literature programs: The Undergraduate Program In German:
German majors and concentrators acquire proficiency in examining literary, philosophical, and historical texts in the original, as well as critical understanding of German culture and society. Particular attention is given to German-speaking traditions within larger European and global contexts. Courses taught in translation build on Columbia's Core Curriculum, thereby allowing students to enroll in upper-level seminars before completing the language requirement. First- and second-year courses in the German language program emphasize spoken and written communication, and provide a basic introduction to German culture. The Graduate Program In German:
The graduate program in German literature and culture (M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D.) incorporates a strong literary and theoretical orientation with cultural studies and cultural history. The program has a historical focus of roughly 1700 to the present. Students have the opportunity to combine their study of literature, literary theory, and intellectual history with coursework and research beyond the department.

Developing Classroom Materials for Less Commonly Taught Languages
This book provides both principles and practical guidelines for LCTL teachers of all levels and languages to transform raw materials into activities for the language classroom. Grounded in research, the author lays out a series of principles that serve to remind teachers of the possibilities that exist when they consider using authentic materials in the classroom. Each principle in the book is accompanied by numerous practical examples in a wide variety of languages created by the author and by teachers who have participated in a summer institute led by Bill Johnston and Louis Janus at CARLA since 1999
