The fishing industry is an essential element of the United Kingdom’s national identity and we continue to see work on fish and fisheries as central to our purposes. Our aim is to promote a healthy, prosperous and sustainable fish and fisheries sector for the long-term benefit of the United Kingdom. If you would like to find out more about the Company’s involvement with the fish and fisheries industry, see our objectives . For a Company view on sustainability , see our recent booklet. The Fishmongers’ involvement with the fishing industry stretches back over 700 years to the days when the Company first inspected the quality of fish on sale in London - a role still actively pursued today at Billingsgate Market . The Company’s contemporary activities include the founding of the Billingsgate Seafood Training School bringing fish cookery skills to school children, the general public and industry professionals alike in a fun, learning environment. The Company engages actively in current debates including on the European Common Fisheries Policy ( click to see Position Paper ) and works in partnership with related organisations to harness the latest knowledge in research. This enables us to highlight serious industry concerns such as sustainability of resources and to draw attention to topical subjects, for example the nutritional benefits of

Despite all the problems, just off the British coast there remains an amazing diversity of fish (over 170 species in the North Sea alone), fisheries (over 1,300 by our reckoning) and fishing boats (4,896 boats of 10m or under in 2006).  Almost incidentally, our work is building up a unique photo-documentary of British inshore fisheries at the start of the 21st century.
Follow the link below to go to the accounts of the fisheries We research fisheries by talking to fishers, fisheries officers, scientists, environmentalists and sea anglers, as well as reviewing the published literature. The results can be seen this website. However, there is a limit to what can be learnt from abstract research, computer models, and broad-brush surveys.
So we insist on getting out on individual boats, and seeing for ourselves how the fish are caught. This is a huge commitment of time and effort (and trust on the part of the fishers). We record this so that we can show chefs the candidate fisheries, have a informed discussion with others, and now – through this website – share the experience more widely.

Fly Fishing in Mid Wales
GLYNDWR FISHERY, DOLANOG, WALES, U.K.
Description
The Glyndwr Fishery on the River Vyrnwy is situated in unspoilt seclusion in the Welsh Borders at Dolanog . It is ideal for the discerning fly fisherman for whom the nature of his surroundings is as important as the wild fish that he catches, and for whom the ultimate delight is to escape from the mundane world and and lose himself in a day's fishing in a hidden valley of outstanding beauty. The Fishery is named after the scenic Glyndwr Way, part of which runs close to the river whilst it cuts down through a deep gorge and around natural outcrops with steeply wooded banks. Later it passes through hilly meadows and mature broad-leaved woodlands. The waters extend for over two and a half miles downstream from Mill Farm , Dolanog, towards Pontrobert . The river is fed partly from Lake Vyrnwy approx.10 miles upstream ( L.Vyrnwy pic.2 ) , and is guaranteed a minimum acceptable flow all year round. This compensation water means that the river remains fishable in drought years when its sisters in the Severn catchment suffer badly. This stretch of the Vyrnwy is noted primarily as a trout river, and this section was the subject of a chapter in a treatise by Richard Threlfall as long ago as 1947. Wild fish of

Fishing Season Closes Sunday 31st October 2010
Pike Fishing Available over Winter, PLease call before coming to the Fishery
Fishing the waters of Castlehill Fishery, you can expect to catch a number of species of fish. As the water is regularly stocked with Rainbow Trout, this probably is the most sought after species in this water. Rainbow Trout size in Castlehill varies from 1lb to 6lb.
There are Brown Trout in the water as well, these would vary in size but are usually around 1lb in weight. Perch are fairly well fished in this water too, the largest being caught around 3.5lb. Finally we also have Pike in this water, serious Pike fishermen fish here regularly and over the past two seasons two fine specimens have been caught, photographed and returned to the water. The two fish were 26.5lb and 30lb respectively. Quite a number of smaller Pike are regularly caught. Castlehill Fishery adopts a coarse fish policy that states all coarse fish should be returned to the water. Pike fishermen are required to have the appropriate unhooking and landing equipment. If these requirements are not met, you may be asked to leave the fishery.

Fishing on Loch Earn, Perthshire
Thanks to the Drummond Estates stocking policy over the last 17 years, Loch Earn, under the right conditions, can produce some of the largest brownies in Scotland, some running to around 10lb. It's amazing when you think that before the Drummond involvement on the angling side, the average size of brown trout was a mere 5oz. This year, it was over the pound mark. Although the limit is 6 fish per rod, it's quite feasible to boat 30 odd fish in an outing, mainly brown trout but with the occasional escapee rainbow trout also showing up. Some of these have grown on to double figures, and are in amazing condition. The fishing is managed by Loch Earn Fishings, which pursues an active brown trout re-stocking programme. We started stocking 17 years ago, and it has certainly paid dividends in improving the angling. In 2006, for example, we introduced 10,000 fish from 12oz to 4lb in weight. 3 to 5lb brown trout are now relatively commonplace, and my own personal best was a fish of 6lb9oz which took a Gosling. The heaviest fish recently was taken in 2005 by Archie Somerville and weighed 26lb 10oz, see our gallery. Also helping the angling is the fact that the loch is covered by the River Earn Catchment Area Protection Order 1990. I know that the place looks huge to the uninitiated, being 6.5 miles long and a mile wide at is widest, and running to great depths. It's some 287 feet at its deepest. But in fact, it's not hard to find fish, and the golden rule is generally to hug the shoreline. Any more than 6 or 7 boat lengths out and you're wasting your time. An intermediate or floating line is all you'll need, except in March and April when you'll probably have to go a bit deeper. I don't use anything fancy as far as fly patterns go, either - Kate McLaren, Gosling, Black Pennell, Invicta and a Mini Muddler if there's a chop.

New this year are; Food at the Fishery, Boat availability, Fly fishing for pike and the photographs. Set in the Trossachs, amidst magnificent scenery where Highland meets Lowland, the 700-acre Lake of Menteith is a well regarded rainbow and brown trout fishery in Scotland and is reputed to be the best location for fly fishing for rainbow trout and brown trout in Central Scotland. Its central location (Glasgow 45 mins, Edinburgh 60 mins, Perth 50 mins) makes it ideal for meeting with friends for a day's or evening's fishing.
The Lake is stocked weekly with 1000 to 1500 quality trout, and yields an average landed fish weight of over 2lbs. In 2009 the average 2 man boat (8hr) catch was 5.4 fish for 11lbs 14oz.
