Walleye Fishing Heats Up

by Ron Anlauf
With summer bearing down on us, the walleye action is really starting to heat up. When the summer sun pushes water temps into the lukewarm range, walleye activity increases accordingly. Although some may find the going a little tough, this time of the year, those that are willing to change how and where they fish for walleyes, can still make some excellent catches.
As walleyes vacate early season hideouts, in favor of deeper summer haunts, there's a period of time when fish are in transition. When there aren't that many fish shallow, and there aren't that many deep, fishing can be a bit sporadic. However, as more and more fish show up at their new "home for the summer", the action can only get better. With an increase in numbers, your chances for finding a few active ones greatly increases. Walleyes don't all do the same thing at the same time, and when it comes to feeding movements, it's like they take turns. Some will be totally inactive, some may be starting to stir a little but won't move far to take a bait, and others may be extremely aggressive and willing to take just about anything you put in front of them. Those are the traitors that can give up a schools identity, and location. Summer location can include deep, offshore structure, like sunken islands, bars and humps. Look for structures that have most of their mass above the thermocline. Structure that is too deep will see little walleye activity, if any, until after the fall turnover.

Ontario Walleye Fishing Resource
O ntario is walleye country. You can find great action for these tasty, golden fish in a variety of settings, from the Great Lakes to shallow and fertile cottage-country reservoirs, to deep, clear rivers and lakes on the Canadian Shield. Fishing begins in late spring as post-spawners concentrate at river holes, river-mouths, inlets, rocky shorelines, sandbars, shallow reefs, sunken islands, and emerging weedbeds. Using jigs weighing 1/8- to 3/8-ounce, dressed with soft-plastic twister-tail or shad bodies, marabou feathers or bucktail, is one of the easiest and most effective ways to fish. Hungry walleye dispersing from spawning areas seldom refuse a jig, especially when tipped with a minnow or a worm. Vertical jig or cast to rocky shorelines, shoals, and weedlines. In stained lakes, chartreuse, lime green, yellow, pink, and white are effective jig colours. When adding bait, use a stinger hook to catch walleye that strike short. During the late-spring/early-summer peak walleye bite, these fish also hit a wide variety of minnow plugs and crankbaits that imitate shiners or yellow perch, one of their main forage bases in many lakes. These lures can be cast or trolled around shoals and weedlines. Walleye love live bait, and a variety of slip-sinker and bottom-bouncer rigs can be used to put a minnow, worm, or leech in front of them. Drift with these rigs when wind or current allow it, back-troll, or inch along with an electric motor or small gas kicker.

John's sponsors offer great products and he uses them at each and every tournament. Click their links to get additional information. We thank them for their gracious support to help develop the walleye fisheries we enjoy today.
John primarily fishes the FLW Tournaments but has fished the PWT and MWC in the past. I fished the Detroit PWT Tourney in 1999 and watched him win with impressive limits. I didn't fare so well, but I was sure happy to see John win a great tournament. I have been fishing with John for walleye, the Central United States, primarily, and look forward to some Canada walleye fishing.
The links above are sure to help you increase your walleye fishing productivity. I know his insight has helped me.
