An Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management framework: the efficient, regional-level planning tool for management agencies. Available now online Ecologically Sustainable Development of Fisheries Ecologically Sustainable Development (or ESD) is a dynamic concept that seeks to integrate short and long-term economic, social and environmental effects into the decision-making of government and industry.  ESD was formulated over 10 years ago, but until recently has proved hard to implement effectively and demonstrate its achievement, in a practical manner.  All Australian fisheries agencies and industry groups are committed to implementing the principles of ESD. This website is part of a national initiative to implement ESD within the management of all Australian fisheries and aquaculture resources.  It is aimed at assisting fishery managers, the industry, environmental groups and the wider community in understanding:

Introduction Objectives Organisational setup Strategies ... Departmental Publication Fishery occupies a unique place in the socio-economic life of the people in Tripura. Fish is one of the most important constituents of the diet of people of Tripura. It is not only an important source of protein but also a source of income and employment to the people engaged in this sector. More importantly this is one sector that directly concerns the poor people of the State.
But, the local production is in-sufficient to provide the required quantity of fish to the populace of the State. A lot requires to be done to increase the production. To overcome this scenario and to make the State self-sufficient in fish (based on 13 Kg per capita availability) by 2010-11, the Deptt. of Fisheries started implementation of a 7 (seven) years Perspective Plan in 2004-05.

AIG Assurance “Thank you so much for speaking with our clients in Montreal and again in Halifax. We have had a overwhelming response to your presentations – and I think the standing ovations spoke volumes as well. I hope we see you again very soon.” “When you sat beside me at lunch I had no idea you were the guest speaker. When they introduced you and you mentioned me right away I felt like a million dollars. I listened to every word you said and I feel so much better about myself already. When you admitted that you have learned from your own mistakes I realized that everyone makes them and I am not a loser after all! Thank you for giving me some confidence – you are a great speaker by the way and I hope we bring you back again next year.” Bell Canada "I see myself in many of the examples you used in your talk today. You made me laugh and you made me cry. You have helped me see my goals more clearly." "Your talk reminded me how much we miss you at Bell. When it comes to hearts, you wrote the book. Thank you for being so honest with us."

Statement on responsible fisheries in Iceland
This statement is presented by several responsible parties in the Icelandic fishing industry, the minister of fisheries, the Marine Research Institute, the Directorate of Fisheries and the Fisheries Association of Iceland. This statement is a part of providing information about the Icelandic fishing industry and how measures are taken to ensure responsible fisheries and the proper treatment of the marine ecosystem around Iceland. The statement is intended for everyone concerned about the status of the fish stocks and responsible fisheries, particularly the numerous parties that purchase and consume Icelandic fish products.
1. Icelandic fisheries are responsible fisheries
2. The catch limitation system is the cornerstone of the fisheries management system
The catch limitation system is the cornerstone of the Icelandic fisheries management system. The system is intended to limit the total catch and to prevent more fishing from the fish stocks than the authorities allow at any given time. The catch share may be divided and transferred to other vessels, with certain limitations.

by Tomas Mozer CONDUCTED WEEK OF FEBRUARY 21-25,2005 BY TOMAS MOZER, CONSULTANT/VOLUNTEER[1]
Return to the previous page BACKGROUND
Further correspondence elucidated the following:
  • The beekeeping technician at the Ministry of Agriculture was not replaced. His duties have been carried out by his assistant, Mr. Lennox James. Mr. James will be the main beneficiary of the training and he will be expected to implement the recommendations. It is also expected that the beekeepers themselves will receive some training through seminars/workshops and field visits to be conducted by the volunteer/consultant. There are approximately 20 beekeepers who have an interest in remaining in the industry.
  • FAVACA response enabled consultant/volunteer to travel for field visit/survey of apiaries as the first phase in the provision of technical assistance. The workshop/seminar will constitute the second phase, at a later date.
    FINDINGS
Anecdotal accounts revealed the existence of a thriving beekeeping industry in S.V.G. during the past century as well as other previous efforts including those of Bees for Development [6], resulting in a significant apicultural capacitation.
Unfortunately some surviving colonies exhibited other serious pathologies including parasitic mite syndrome (usually viral in nature) and American/European foulbroods (bacterial infections of varying virulence); suspected pesticide poisoning was also observed, as were opportunistic wax moth infestations/damage [9]

    CANADIAN ATLANTIC FISHERIES COLLAPSE
In 1992, the devestating collapse of the cod stocks off the east coast of Newfoundland forced the Canadian government to take drastic measures and close the fishery. Over 40,000 people lost there jobs. The communities are still struggling to recover. The marine ecosystem is still in a state of collapse. The collapse of this vital and important fishery sounded a warning bell to governments around the world who were shocked that a relatively sophisticated, scientifically-based fisheries management program, not unlike their own, could have gone so wrong. The Canadian government had been warned by scientists and environmentalists that the cod stocks were overexploited and that there fleets were employing destructive fishing practices. The refused to significantly reduce quotas sighting the loss of jobs as too great a concern. The cost of their short term outlook and refusal to acknowledge ecological limits was devestating.
    THE STORY
The ocean around the rocky shores of Newfoundland were once so full of cod that explorer John Cabot marveled in 1497 that they virtually blocked his ship. In the centuries to follow, fish became the one of the only reasons anyone ever came to Newfoundland, or stayed. Until the mid-twentieth century

    Delimitation of the resource:
    • The management unit is redfish in Icelandic waters. Stocks are of two species, Sebastes marinus and Sebastes mentella. Fishing area is entirely within the Icelandic EEZ and fisheries are therefore managed by Icelandic authorities.
    Responsible utilization:
    • Stock assessment and advice on Total Allowable Catch (TAC) is received from the Icelandic Marine Research Institute and from ICES. All fishing is conducted in accordance with legal requirements. Fishing is solely conducted with registered vessels authorised to participate in the fishery by Icelandic authorities. About 98% of the catch is by Icelandic vessels, the remainder is by foreign vessels. Fishing by Icelandic vessels is managed under the Icelandic fisheries management system of Individual Transferable Quotas - ITQs. Icelandic authorities decide on the annual TAC (tonnes) in accordance with scientific advice. The TAC is distributed among vessels in accordance with their percentage share of redfish quota.
    Active monitoring and control:
    • The Icelandic Directorate of Fisheries monitors the fishery and operates a program of on-board observers.
