What is flamenco
1st post for new people
Simply put, Flamenco is a form of singing, guitar playing, and dance, incorporating percussive foot stamping and hand clapping, that comes from Andalusia in Southern Spain.
Historically it has been a cultural outlet for the poor and oppressed. I think of it as the Blues of Southern Spain.
Think of a gypsy camp on the edge of town; a fire is burning and the families gather around it.
They may have been travelling a long time and not been allowed to stay in one place for long. They have been not accepted, not trusted, yet not allowed to work and make money like the local citizens.
Stories are told around that fire; poems in song. Expressions of a day, a week, hard times or good. Love stories often, unrequited love even more, but flamenco embraces all human emotions.
The guitar accompanies the stories. Shouts of encouragment help the story. Clapping helps the rhythm of the guitar. When the song is a sad tale, the song has a wailing mournful quality, when it is happy and playful, the whole thing speeds up. The clapping becomes rhythmical and playful and a dancer may feel it in himself to get up and express the emotions inside him. (or her)

Flamenco is a genuine Spanish art form, or, to be more exact, a genuine Southern Spanish art. It exists in three forms: el cante, the song, el baile, the dance, and la guitarra, the guitar playing. Gypsies are often credited with the "invention" of flamenco, and it is at least certain that they played an important part in its creation. But the popular songs and dances of Andalusia also had a major influence on early Flamenco. First there were the legendary Tartessos, and later, nine centuries of Muslim history in the Iberian Peninsula. Neither passed without leaving an imprint on Andalusian culture, and both influenced flamenco, directly and indirectly. The earliest mention of flamenco in literature is in Las Cartas Marruecas of Cadalso, in 1774. During its Golden Age (1869-1910)

The Origins Of Flamenco Dancing
The origins of Flamenco dancing go far back in time, back to the Spanish province of Andalucia in the 15th or 16th century. The music and dance were a kind of far-away-day rock 'n' roll music: guitar-based and danceable. A very high degree of importance is placed on the percussive aspects, originally created by people who came from impoverished backgrounds. Salubrious, often improvised, and a synthesis of the music and dance traditions of people from widely different cultural and ethnic backgrounds such as the Moors, Jews, "Gypsies", who were believed to be descendants of ancient Egyptians, and of course the indigenous people of Andalucia. All of the music and dance was built upon the foundation of the instrumental cante gitano, or "guitar song" tradition, much as all of rock 'n' roll was built upon the blues. There are literally hundreds of different types of pieces which are characterized by different harmonic and melodic structures, rhythmic patterns, and song types. Among the most prominent of these different types are the seguiriyas, rondena, soleares, zapateado, alegrias, malaguena, and fandango. However, there are just three basic guitar patterns: rasgueado (strumming, which can be very rapid), paseo (spirited melodic passages), and the falseta (improvised interludes). In the 19th century in Andalusia, then in Madrid and other parts of Spain, then beyond that, cafes opened up that featured Flamenco guitar and dancing as the primary entertainment, and this helped to spread the popularity and recognition of this cultural experience. Between the turn of the 19th century and 1936, while the cafes went into decline a more structured and formalized, theatrical mode took hold in the public imagination. "Opera Flamenco" and "Flamenco Ballet" became popular, and so did a new vocal tradition that emphasized smooth, controlled vocal delivery (this vocal style would later on have an influence on Latin jazz vocals). The leading vocalists of this time were Antonia Chacon and Manuel Torre, while the leading guitar players were Javier Molena, Manolo de Huelva, Ramón Montoya, and Perico del Lunar.

Flamenco Dancing
Flamenco is the traditional song and dance of the Gypsies (flamencos) of Andalusia. Its history can be traced over several centuries from Gypsy, Moorish, Andalucian, and other roots. Its evolution is a source of great debate with no accepted explanation of how flamenco resulted from the cultural influences of such diverse regions as North Africa, Southern Europe and the Near and Far East. Flamenco has never been more popular in Spain and abroad than it is today with a new generation of new flamenco performers in the post-Franco era who have broadened flamenco's appeal to an international audience.

Flamenco Dancing
Here in Asia, Flamenco dancing is a new art form established only 2 decades ago. It is gaining popularity first in Japan, now in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Flamenco has found its way to China in recent years. Many are attracted by the strong expression and the intensity of the dance. It is believed that Asians are reserved and by tradition, do not express their true feelings so easily. The strong expression of anger, death, happiness in the Art is a gateway for anyone to express their true emotions through an artistic way. Many claim that it is one of the most difficult dances to learn, unlike other dance forms with predictable music beat, Flamenco is often using 12 beats and the tempo changes throughout the dance. It takes intensive training to master the art. Dance steps and expressions are often unpredictable, you need determination to learn. The progress of individual dancers varies. In my opinion, some are born with the talent and its easier for these people. As for the rest, it is possible to master the art with perseverance and determination. Flamenco Dancing
I think it's hard to sit still or stop your hands from clapping when listening to the sounds of genuine flamenco. Also wonderful to see people young and old from Andalucia who have been dancing these melodies since they were old enough to walk. I once took some lessons in dancing Sevillanas, which is more of a Spanish folk dance than pure flamenco. I loved it and plan to write about it soon including pictures taken in the class.
Here is Maria Pages, a beautiful and talented artist dancing Firedance, from the show Riverdance:
But to hear genuine flamenco you must go to Andalucia and know where to find people who don't go to classes but learn the rhythms and dance steps from their families. Here is one video of a little gypsy girl dancing Bulerias, one of the forms of flamenco.
(Be prepared - this is a bit noisy!)
And one of the greatest flamenco guitarists: Paco de Lucia,
And here he is again playing Entre Dos Aguas , in a rhumba flamenca style with a group.
I'm taking a little rest this weekend after redesigning my blog with the new template and header. I hope you like it. I'll have some new photos to show you soon.

Flamenco in Seville
Is the birthplace of flamenco in Seville or Jerez? Or maybe another town in Spain? We could argue the origins. We could also argue about where to see the true flamenco - in a tablao , a bar or a street corner. We'll get to some of this below, as I don't feel like arguing! The important thing to know is that the cradle of flamenco is certainly in western Andalucia, and there are few better places for flamenco than Seville. This section covers a little of everything, but much like my bullfighting section, the information is specific to Seville and I will link to the experts who know the details much better than I do.

Flamenco dancing
People dancing Flamenco at the Feria Flamenco is a genuine Spanish art, and to be more exact an genuine art of southern Spain. It exists in three forms: Cante Flamenco, the song, Baile Flamenco, the dance, and Guitarra Flamenca, guitar playing. The flamenco dancing is the symbol of Spanish Culture. Although the dance on its own is called Sevillanas. Gypsies are very often named as its fathers, and it can be taken for certain that they play the most important part in its creation. But also the popular songs and dances of Andalusia have influenced early Flamenco considerably.
Flamenco dancer Certainly there were other influences, too, as it will not surprise in a country that has been dominated by most diverse cultures and civilizations during its different historical periods. There were the legendary Tartessos, and seven centuries of Muslim occupation hardly could have passed without leaving traces. All that, directly or indirectly, influenced Flamenco. When trying to find the true origins of flamenco most studies totally disregard the history of the Southern Iberian Peninsula previous to the 18th century, it is nevertheless fair to think that the cultural mix that occurred in the history of Andalusia had something to do with the development of Flamenco, an artistic expression truly born to the people.
