But your sleep is anything but restful. All night, you're plagued by tiny pinpricks and incessant itching. It doesn't take you long to figure out that you're being attacked by a seemingly infinite mob of hungry fleas. What happened? Did your pets pick up an infestation at the kennel? Did the vampire -like insects hitch a ride on your luggage? Or did a swarm of them decide to move in while you were gone? It's a creepy idea, but the most likely answer is that the fleas were waiting for you. Fleas are

Reduced Chemical Management of Fleas Insect growth regulators (IGR) and insect development inhibitors (IDI) disrupt egg and larval development, but do not kill adult fleas.
    http://entomology.ifas.ufl.edu/creatures/urban/occas/catflea.htm
    common name: cat flea
    scientific name: Ctenocephalides felis
Introduction Distribution Description Life Cycle ... Selected References
    Introduction
There are over 2,000 described species of fleas. The most common domestic flea is the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis
The dog flea, Ctenocephalides canis , appears similar to the cat flea, but is rarely found in the United States. Cat fleas are commonly found on both cats and dogs in North America, while dog fleas are found in Europe. The two species are distinguished by a slight morphological difference which is detectable only under high magnification.
    Distribution
Although it exists worldwide, the cat flea is most commonly found in the United States, in and around homes with pets.
    Description
Eggs : Cat flea eggs are laid at the rate of up to one egg per hour. They are oval, smooth, and about 0.5 mm in size. Due to their dry, smooth surface, the eggs easily fall out of the animal’s hair. Though otherwise visible, the white eggs are nearly impossible to see against surfaces such as carpet, bedding, and lawn. It is here where the eggs will remain until the larvae emerge.

    Larvae
    larva
Pupae : Before becoming adults, the larvae spin silk cocoons in which they will develop. Because of the sticky outer surface of the cocoons, dirt and debris are attracted to them and provide camouflage. The pupae remain in the cocoons until they have fully developed into adult fleas.

    DEET Insect Repellents
What are DEET insect repellents? DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) is a versatile and effective insect repellent. Insect repellents containing DEET have been used for more than 40 years by millions of people worldwide to repel mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, biting flies and chiggers. These products are available in many formulations, including lotions, creams, gels, aerosol and pump sprays, and towelettes. Insect repellents can reduce the risk of mosquito and tick bites, but products containing DEET must be used properly. How do DEET and other repellents work? Mosquitoes and other blood-feeding flies (such as black flies and deer flies) are attracted to hosts by skin odors and carbon dioxide from their breath. When a mosquito gets close to a host, DEET and some other repellents jam the insect's sensors and confuse the insect so it is unable to land and bite the host successfully. Repellents are effective only at short distances from the treated surface, so the user may still see mosquitoes flying nearby. As long as the user is not getting bitten, there is no reason to apply more DEET. What problems can be caused by mosquito bites?

    Plague
Plague is a severe and potentially deadly bacterial infection.
    Causes
Plague is caused by the organism Yersinia pestis. Rodents, such as rats, spread the disease to humans. People can get the plague when they are bitten by a flea that carries the plague bacteria from an infected rodent. In rare cases, you may get the disease when handling an infected animal. Certain forms of the plague can be spread from human to human. When someone with pneumonic plague coughs, microscopic droplets carrying the infection move through the air. Anyone who breathes in these particles may catch the disease. An epidemic may be started this way. In the Middle Ages, massive plague epidemics killed millions of people. Today, plague is rare in the United States, but has been known to occur in parts of California, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. There three most common forms of plague are:
    • Bubonic plague an infection of the lymph nodes Pneumonic plague an infection of the lungs Septicemic plague an infection of the blood
The time between being infected and developing symptoms is typically 2 to 10 days, but may be as short as a few hours for pneumonic plague.

Adult fleas are between 1-3 mm long and brownish in colour. Their bodies are compressed from side to side which enables the flea to move through fur and feather with ease. The hind legs of a flea are relatively large and are used for jumping heights of up to 16 cm.
Flea eggs are pearl white in colour, oval shaped and approximately 0.5 mm long.
    How do I spot them?

    17. What Are Hotspots?
