THE 100 YEAR FLOOD GALLERIES
On the 12th August 2002, Prague was hit by the worst floods it had experienced for more than 100 years.
In less than 48 hours, the Vltava swelled to 4 times its normal size, breaking the riverbanks and flooding massive regions of the Czech Republic capital. The city was placed in a state of emergency, and over 50,000 people were evacuated from the center. Huge areas of the city's powergrid were shut down, leaving even those not directly threatened without power for days. Historic sites such as the National Theater and Rudolfinum came close to devastation as the floods grew worse. Thanks to the tireless efforts of thousands of soldiers, police, firemen, and volunteers worked day and night to secure affected areas, millions of crowns was saved. But even with the whole city joining together in the fight against the floods, the total damage done the city is estimated at more than two billion dollars.
Prague.TV was one of the more fortunate victims of the crisis, suffering only extended power outages to our main offices. Other parts of the city, however, were less fortunate. To see the catastrophic effects of Prague's worst flooding in over 100 years, check out our photo galleries below with images taken during the crisis.

There is a desperate need for temporary shelter, clean drinking water and toilets to avert a public health catastrophe . People also need medical care and basic food items. People in the flood's wake were already desperately poor and what little possessions they had have been washed away. Three months after floods devastated Pakistan, cases of disease are increasing and in the worst-hit region, the southern province of Sindh, large areas remain underwater. At the same time, funds for the UN flood appeal are drying up and threatening the aid and reconstruction effort. As winter approaches, seven million people are still without adequate shelter. At the same time, funds for the UN flood appeal are drying up and threatening the aid and reconstruction effort. As winter approaches, seven million people are still without adequate shelter. Oxfam's Caroline Gluck met with one woman, Famida Ghancha, who describes the situation that she and her family face. Famida Ghancha, in her 30s, has six children (three girls, three boys). Her youngest son is three. Her husband had an electrical shop in Khushal village, Mehar, Dadu District. She describes her current situation: “My son got sick after the floods. He had fever, diarrhea and was really weak. I got sick too. “The floods came at night and everyone was sleeping , the waters suddenly poured in and our beds were floating. We rushed out, leaving the house straight away. We only had some blankets, that was it. We had no livestock.

Flash floods, which can develop quickly, often have a dangerous wall of roaring water. The wall carries rocks, mud, and rubble and can sweep away most things in its path. Be aware of flood hazards no matter where you live, but especially if you live in a low-lying area, near water or downstream from a dam. Although there are no guarantees of safety during a flood, you can take actions to protect yourself. You should have a disaster plan . Being prepared can help reduce fear, anxiety and losses. and that makes the chance of flood-related death higher. (Floods) Also the high costs and maintenance of flood protection systems and structures tends to turn communities off from proposing methods for dealing with this potential killer. Floods pose tremendous danger to people and property. Since 1900, floods have taken more than 10,000 lives in the United States alone. Eighty per cent of flood deaths take place in a vehicle. Just six inches of flood water can knock an adult down. Only two feet of water can float a large sized vehicle. One-third of flooded roads and bridges are so damaged that only fifty per cent of those trying to cross in a vehicle make it to the other side. (Facts About Flooding) A flood is defined as a high flow of water that comes from a body of water (Basics of Flooding) and overtops the normal confinements and/or covers land that is normally dry. (Nuhfer, Proctor, and Moser) Floods are the most common and widespread of all natural disasters, besides fire. (Backgrounder: Floods and Flash Floods) They are also the number one related killer. (Project Safeside: Flood and Flash Flood Safety) There are three major types of floods: river floods flash floods and coastal floods . River floods are caused by high or overflowing water from a river and typically occur after winter and spring rains and when snow is melting. More rains are predicted for Saturday
With flood levels at their highest for 157 years - and more rain predicted - people in Dresden are fighting to keep the water from doing even more damage to the east German city. About 14 people have been killed across eastern Germany and thousands have now been forced to leave vulnerable parts of Dresden, which has been waterlogged by the swollen River Elbe. The Semper Opera House will be closed for two months
The city's historic centre is thought to be in acute danger in the face of predictions that the water could rise further still, with huge efforts required to save unique buildings and artefacts. The German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, will host a meeting on Sunday in Berlin with ministers from Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, as well as Romano Prodi, president of the European Commission, to discuss the floods. Many important pieces of art in Prague were moved out of harm's way before the waters arrived, according to Alfredo Azula, managing editor of English language newspaper the Prague Post. "It looks like we've been lucky. We had a lot of warning that the water was coming, so that stuff was moved to higher ground," he told BBC News Online. The city's historic National Theatre, a landmark that dates from 1881 and became a symbol of Czech national renaissance in the 19th century, had been under threat of collapse. But is expected to survive now that water levels are dropping, Mr Azula said.

Businesses in Linz have been devastated by the floods
By Nick Thorpe
BBC correspondent in Linz, Austria The top of the street sign is still just visible above the brown, vengeful flood. "Upper Danube Street," it reads. One trembles to think what has become of "Lower Danube Street." At first light on Wednesday, the former inhabitants and shop owners on the left bank of the River Danube were already out in force. They were washing the mud off the outside of their houses or pouring water, by the bucketful, out of their front doors - as though bailing out a sinking ship. Could this flooding have been prevented?
While the floods begin to fall in upper Austria, they are still rising in lower Austria, with the city of Krems particularly hard hit. But while the most dramatic pictures focus on the historic towns along the Danube, questions are beginning to be asked about the causes of the flooding and the human errors which may have made the loss of life and damage worse that it should have been.

Kadir the elephant was trapped in his enclosure
Humans are not the only victims of the floods in Prague. An elephant and a hippopotamus had to be put down and a gorilla was feared to have drowned after the rising waters reached the Zoological Garden on the edge of the Czech capital.
We fear that the gorilla is no longer alive because the entire house where it used to live is under water
Vit Khale, Zoo spokesman The Indian elephant, called Kadir, was a large, older male and had been separated from the other elephants. But he became trapped in his flooded enclosure, and zookeepers concluded the 35-year-old animal could not be rescued. They decided to kill the elephant rather than let it drown. Kadir has been a zoo favourite since 1968, and has even appeared in several Czech films.

FLOODS AND FLASH FLOODS
Flash floods occur within a few minutes or hours of excessive rainfall, a dam or levee failure, or a sudden release of water held by an ice jam. Flash floods can roll boulders, tear out trees, destroy buildings and bridges, and scour out new channels. Rapidly rising water can reach heights of 30 feet or more. Furthermore, flash flood-producing rains can also trigger catastrophic mud slides. You will not always have a warning that these deadly, sudden floods are coming. Most flood deaths are due to FLASH FLOODS.
Most flash flooding is caused by slow-moving thunderstorms, thunderstorms repeatedly moving over the same area, or heavy rains from hurricanes and tropical storms.
Types of Flooding
  • River Flooding
Flooding along rivers is a natural and inevitable part of life. Some floods occur seasonally when winter or spring rains, coupled with melting snow, fill river basins with too much water too quickly. Torrential rains from decaying hurricanes or tropical systems can also produce river flooding. Coastal Flooding
Winds generated from tropical storms and hurricanes or intense offshore low pressure systems can drive ocean water inland and cause significant flooding. Escape routes can be blocked off and blocked by high water. Coastal flooding can also be produced by sea waves called tsunamis, sometimes referred to as tidal waves. These waves are produced by earthquakes or volcanic activity.

Prague residents survey the damage
Severe flooding in central Europe looks set seriously to disrupt the Czech Republic's economy, forcing the government to borrow more. The final repair bill could exceed the Ł1.2bn spent putting right the damage caused by a previous bout of flooding in 1997, according to reports. The Czech crown fell by more than 1% against the euro on Tuesday amid fears that public sector borrowing will have to rise in order to pay for reparations. The Czech government, which was already planning to run a budget deficit next year, is now thought likely to fall even deeper into the red. The latest inundation came as the government was facing final payouts on bonds it issued to pay for repairs after the 1997 floods. It has so far announced an initial emergency aid package worth $34m.
