Notice to Florida Leader Readers
Oxendine Publishing has been proud to serve the Florida education community for the past 22 years through our magazines and awards programs.
However, the focus of our company has evolved, and our new concentration is Student Government training. We’ve dedicated a great deal of time and resources to develop the American Student Government Association —the national professional association serving Student Governments—as well as related conferences and consulting services
Because of this new direction, we have decided to put Florida Leader magazine up for sale. Our company will no longer be producing the magazine, the Best of Florida Schools Awards, or the Florida College Student of the Year Award. Yet we hope that a new owner will continue to publish Florida Leader and sponsor its important awards programs.
We thank you all for your support and hope that you will consider joining ASGA or subscribing to Student Leader magazine , our national publication. If you have any questions, please

The Board of Education has stewardship for multiple aspects of education within the state of Florida. As such, the FBE holds as its mission the creation of one efficient, seamless system which seeks to increase the proficiency of all Florida students, from preschool students to students enrolled in college, by making possible the opportunity to enlarge skills and knowledge through learning environments and research which students, families and communities value. The Board also seeks to maintain a system of accountability which includes the following goals: highest possible student achievement; seamless communication and maximum access for all stakeholders; creation of a skilled workforce and heightened economic development; and delivery of efficient, high quality services. To help in accomplishing this mission, the Board of Education has organized commissions, committees and task forces to focus on various key responsibilities of education delivery within the state of Florida.
Florida Board of Education - Functions and Goals
In its daily functioning, the Department of Education (as overseen by the Board of Education), provides a single repository of educational data received from school districts, universities, community colleges and independent postsecondary schools. This enables the Department of Education (DOE) to track student performance over time and in various educational venues. The DOE is also charged with providing support and services for more than 2.6 million students, 318,000 full-time staff, 180,000 teachers, and 3,800 public schools. Additionally, the DOE serves as the teaching credentialing body for the state of Florida.

Jatropha in space
Florida Today reports on experiments by University of Florida researchers and South Florida's Vecenergy to find genetic variations in Jatropha suitable for oil production by flying samples in the International Space Station The experiments study cell cultures such as these: "We are curious to learn what genes will be activated. Maybe some of those genes could help us develop new plants," Wagner Vendrame, University of Florida associate professor of horticulture, said. "They will get a tremendous variation. We know we are going to see something. We just don't know what."

NYTimes explores Algae as Fuel
Algae are attracting attention because the strains can potentially produce 10 or more times more fuel per acre than the corn used to make ethanol or the soybeans used to make biodiesel. Moreover, algae might be grown on arid land and brackish water, so that fuel production would not compete with food production. And algae are voracious consumers of carbon dioxide, potentially helping to keep some of this greenhouse gas from contributing to global warming. Companies/organizations mentioned include: No mention of local company PetroAlgae

History of the Indians who lived in southeast Florida, the Miami Circle, membership application for the Tekesta Taino Tribal Band of Bimini, Florida, an educational and cultural organization, and links.

The Tekesta Taino
Tribal Band
of Bimini, Florida The Tekesta Indians lived in what is now Dade and Broward Counties, southeast Florida, and had a capitol town, probably also called Tekesta, in Miami. Although their social structure was collapsing when their manner of life was first recorded, there is some indication that before contact with Europeans and before the hegemony of the better known Calusa Indians, they had developed a paramount chiefdom or state-level society. They were preceeded in Florida by paleoindian big game hunters, but the Tekesta and other Taino peoples who settled Bimini (the Taino name for Florida) after 8000 B.C. were quite different, representing a tropical marine adaptation imported from the Caribbean and ultimately Amazonia. The Native American population of the Caribbean was complex, but in the course of time it came to share a sense of common heritage based on genetic and geographic origin, a common language, environment, and some shared culture. The term Taino refers to this sense of common heritage that is shared by modern tribes such as the Jatibonicu of Boriken and also the historical tribes of Bimini, such as the Calusa, Timucua, Tekesta, Ais, and Jaega. Today those who are aware of their Taino heritage are struggling to define themselves in terms of it. This web page, which is sponsored by the Tekesta's fellow Arawak-speaking Taino, aims to help them toward that goal.
