Florida Geography
Florida consists of the Panhandle extending along the northern Gulf of Mexico and the large Peninsula with the Atlantic Ocean as its eastern border and the Gulf of Mexico as its western border. It is bordered on the north by the states of Georgia and Alabama and on the west, at the end of the panhandle, by Alabama. It is near the countries of the Caribbean, particularly the Bahamas and Cuba.
At 345 feet (105 metres) above mean sea level, Britton Hill is the highest point in Florida. This is also the lowest highpoint of any U.S. state. Contrary to popular belief, however, Florida is not an entirely "flat" state. Some places, such as Clearwater, feature relatively high vistas rising 50 to 100 feet above the water. Much of the interior of Florida, typically 25 miles or more away from the coastline, features rolling hills with elevations ranging from 100 to 250 feet in many locations. Lake County holds the highest point of peninsular Florida, Sugarloaf Mountain , at 312 feet. The amount of topographical change will surprise many visitors.
Area: 65,795 sq mi (170,304 sq km)

Situated in southeastern United States, along the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean coastlines, Florida is a diverse and interesting state. Discovered by Ponce de Leon in 1513, Florida's first permanent Spanish settlers arrived at St Augustine in 1565. Great Britain gained control of Florida in 1763, at the Peace of Paris, but Spain regained the area in 1783, at the Treaty of Versailles. Spain later ceded Florida to the United States in 1819, when the Florida Purchase Treaty was signed. Entering the Union on March 3, 1845, Florida became the southernmost state in the USA, and Key West in the Florida Keys became its southernmost city. Other major Florida cities include

    Richard Florida: Geography Is Destiny
If you're not in a creative city, says the George Mason University professor of public policy, you won't attract top talent
In 1994, Carnegie Mellon University professor Richard Florida was paging through a newspaper when a headline triggered what he calls a "holy moly" moment. Lycos, a search-engine company spun out of CMU, announced it was moving from Pittsburgh to Boston. When Florida asked why, colleagues told him that "Boston offered the lifestyle options that made it easier for Lycos to attract top creative and entrepreneurial talent," he recalls.
This explanation sparked a powerful insight: Clustered in certain U.S. cities, there is a group of innovative people about 38 million of them, by Florida's latest calculation that generate far more than their proportionate share of wealth. Florida pegged their annual wages and salaries at about $1.7 trillion in 2003, and he has chronicled their behavior and motivations in two influential books: The Rise of the Creative Class (2002) and The Flight of the Creative Class
Based on U.S. labor and census statistics, Florida, 48, figures the members of this cadre, including entrepreneurs, musicians, scientists, designers, and engineers, made up 10% of the workforce in 1900. Today they account for almost 30%, produce nearly half the country's yearly wages and salaries, and are far more mobile than ever before.

Florida is a huge plateau the highest point in the state is being a hilltop in the panhandle, 345 ft (105 m) above sea level, near the city of Lakewood, in Walton County. Much of Florida is barely above sea-level and no point in the state is more than 70 mi (113 km) from saltwater.
Florida has 30,000 lakes, ponds, and sinks, of which Lake Okeechobee in south-central Florida is the largest in Florida and the fourth largest in the US. Silver Springs, near Ocala in north-central Florida, has the largest average flow of all inland springs, 823 cu ft (23 cu m) per second. The numerous underground streams and caverns are created by the action of groundwater and rainfall in dissolving portions of the thick limestone layer that underlies Florida's sandy soil. There are about 700 rivers, streams, and creeks, the longest being St. Johns, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Other important rivers of Florida are Suwannee, and the Apalachicola. There are many islands around the mainland, the bests known are Florida Keys of which Key Largo is the largest and Key West is the most popular one.

HOME The Florida peninsula is a porous plateau of karst limestone sitting atop bedrock. Extended systems of underwater caves, sinkholes and springs are found throughout the state and supply most of the water used by residents. The limestone is topped with sandy soils deposited as ancient beaches over millions of years as global sea levels rose and fell. During the last Ice Age, lower sea levels and a drier climate revealed a much wider peninsula, largely desert. The Everglades, an enormously wide, very slow-flowing river encompasses the southern tip of the peninsula.
