(24 June 1998) - Thirty-three Orange County teachers have received mini-grants to support a team of individuals to attend SIGGRAPH 98, 19-24 July, 1998, at the Orange County Convention Center. Each team of four individuals, consisting of an educator, school administrator, student, and parent, will be taking part in the conference to explore the potential computer graphics and interactive technology has within education. This program is a joint sponsorship program between the Florida Department of Education, the SIGGRAPH 98 Community Outreach program, and the ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee. A total of 66 teams from Florida K-12 schools are participating in the program. SIGGRAPH, a Special Interest Group of ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), is the worldÕs largest and most active professional society for computer graphics and interactive techniques. Over 30,000 computer graphics researchers, animators, artists, educators and other enthusiasts will gather to recognize and celebrate 25 years of inventing the future of computer graphics and the changes this community is bringing to the world. A comprehensive technical program, three-day exhibition, and special activities focusing on research, art, animation, and interactivity are planned. The SIGGRAPH 98 Community Outreach Committee spent more than a year working with Florida local-teacher organizations and education associations to determine the best way for SIGGRAPH 98 to create activities that explore the potential of new technology for kids. The result is a four-day speaker track that brings together speakers from industry with educators and students to discuss career opportunities in animation and special effects, the role of home technologies in education, and how to develop partnerships with industry. Florida educators on the panels include; Nancy Krebsbach, Evans High School in Orlando; Colette Stemple, Coral Reef School in Richmond; and Darlene Wolfe, Pasco County Schools.

Assessing Energy Costs For Florida Schools
The plot below shows distributions of energy cost intensity at 20 high schools and 103 elementary and middle schools in a major school district in central Florida. Use the plot to rate the energy cost performance of your school. To use the plot, you will need:
  • Gross floor area of your school(s).
  • Total annual cost for all fuels (electricity, gas, etc.)
  • Calculate the energy cost per gross square foot of your school and enter the plot on the x-axis at that value. Read up to the applicable curve and then left to find your rating. The rating for your school corresponds to the percent of schools in your area paying more to meet their energy needs. Schools that pay a minimal amount for their energy needs score high. Those that pay a higher than normal amount (those with the greatest potential for substantial energy cost reductions) score low. The tool will help you spot those exceptional schools and those that can most benefit from energy-related improvements. Schools rating below 30 often have very large energy cost reduction potential.

Commercial Buildings The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has benchmarking tools available for 10 prominent U.S. building types. These tools address both electric and non-electric fuels simultaneously (whole-building energy use) within each tool and also normalize for the key drivers of energy use specific to each building type. They represent the state-of-the-art in energy performance benchmarking for commercial buildings. Portfolio Manager is EPA's tool that allows users to track the energy performance of and benchmark buildings within their entire portfolio. Portfolio Manager operates on monthly energy use data. It is also used to support the qualification process for the Energy Star performance recognition available from EPA for high-performance buildings. This tool is widely used by both the private and government sectors. Go to EPA's Portfolio Manager Tool Target Finder is EPA's tool that allows a user to estimate an energy performance benchmark or target for a new building design. With this in hand, a user can test their design options toward achieving a desired performance target. Target Finder operates on annual energy use data.
