Gardens should start with the soil, but most of us don't have the patience for that. So here's some help to get you moving in the right direction, whether you're looking for info on a particular plant, design direction or you are actually starting from the ground up. zSB(3,3)

Adjust font-size: Published October 28, 2010 by: Eric Brennan View Profile Follow Add to Favorites ... Fall Food With so many lovely fall flowers that bloom each year, it's hard to imagine why more of us don't have blazingly brilliant fall flower gardens. From red to orange to purple to blue, a wide color wheel of shades and textures allow fall flower gardening to happen best. So which color fall flowers do you want in your garden?
Red flowers are often seen glowing fiery red during the fall. Red shield hibiscus is one of my favorite fall flowering shrubs and it's easy to take care of in warmer wintering climates. Celosia is a great fall flower and it doesn't come in just red either, it flowers in a huge variety of colors. Mixing and matching celosias are a great way to produce ground cover that catches the eye. Sedum is a wonderful bushy bouquet of red flowers that looks like red broccoli and bloom from late summer to late fall.
Orange zinnias come in a couple of shades of orange and red colors and grow perfect just about anywhere during fall. Serviceberry creates lovely berries and flowers of red that help to feed birds during the scarce fall food months.

    Books The World Of Orchids
A Practical Guide to Cultivating Orchids
(Ross) With an estimated 25,000 species worldwide, orchids are loved for their exotic and mysterious flowers. In the wild, they can be found in almost every conceivable habitat, from cloud-shrouded mountains and tropical rainforests, to mangrove swamps and semi-desert scrubs. They are perhaps the most challenging of all flowering plants to cultivate outside their natural habitat, often taking many years before the first flower appears. In The World Of Orchids, Jack Ross presents the results of his many years of research into orchid cultivation using soilless culture techniques. He provides research-based advice on organic and inorganic growing media, fertilising and watering, plant nutrition and nutrient feed systems, pH measurement, stress factors, tissue analysis, and mineral deficiency and toxicity. He also describes the unique root system of the orchid plant, propagating and raising seedlings, as well as repotting and potting-on. This book is for the small orchid enthusiast as well as commercial growers producing high-quality orchid plants and flowers on a large scale. The World Of Orchids - A Practical Guide to Cultivating Orchids in Soilless Culture, will prove a welcome addition to the libraries of all orchid lovers. Softcover. 160 pages.

    SECOND EDITION
EXPLANATION It has been my desire to reconstruct the two books, "Garden-Making" and "Practical Garden-Book"; but inasmuch as these books have found a constituency in their present form, it has seemed best to let them stand as they are and to continue their publication as long as the demand maintains itself, and to prepare a new work on gardening. This new work I now offer as "A Manual of Gardening." It is a combination and revision of the main parts of the other two books, together with much new material and the results of the experience of ten added years. A book of this kind cannot be drawn wholly from one's own practice, unless it is designed to have a very restricted and local application. Many of the best suggestions in such a book will have come from correspondents, questioners, and those who enjoy talking about gardens; and my situation has been such that these communications have come to me freely. I have always tried, however, to test all such suggestions by experience and to make them my own before offering them to my reader. I must express my special obligation to those persons who collaborated in the preparation of the other two books, and whose contributions have been freely used in this one: to C.E. Hunn, a gardener of long experience; Professor Ernest Walker, reared as a commercial florist; Professor L.R. Taft and Professor F.A. Waugh, well known for their studies and writings in horticultural subjects.

Early Blooming Flowers: What to plant for Early Spring Blooms
Gardeners in cold climates can still enjoy colorful flowers in the garden as early as March and even February in some areas, even when there is still snow on the ground. How early certain bulbs, perennials and shrubs will bloom varies from one zone to the next, and even on the location within your own garden (depending on sun, shelter, etc.). The following list is by no means exhaustive, but will give you ideas for some early bloomers that are good bets for producing flowers in late winter and early spring. read more
