Information on planting by the best phase and sign of the moon. Regional planting calendar lists specific vegetables, flowers, and garden chores.
http://www.gardeningbythemoon.com/
Gardening by the phases of the moon is a technique that can speed the germination of your seeds by working with the forces of nature.
Plants respond to the same gravitational pull of tides that affect the oceans, which alternately stimulates root and leaf growth. Seeds sprout more quickly, plants grow vigorously and at an optimum rate, harvests are larger and they don't go to seed as fast. This method has been practiced by many for hundreds of years, and is a perfect compliment to organic gardening because it is more effective in non-chemically treated soil.
Lunar planting is influenced by two factors:
The lunar phase controls the amount of moisture in the soil. This moisture is at its peak at the time of the new and the full moon. The sun and moon are lined up with earth. Just as the moon pulls the tides in the oceans, it also pulls upon the subtle bodies of water, causing moisture to rise in the earth which encourages germination and growth. Tests have proven that seeds will absorb the most water at the time of the full moon.

This ones for you "LIL"
It has been a rough month in the Usary House. One of the sweetest ladies I have ever known died 2 weeks ago. She was my Mother-in-Law... Since I grew up across the street from my husband and his family, and we have lived next door to them for 32 years I have actually known them forever! For a lot of people living next door to your in-laws would be terrible, but for me and my family it has always been wonderful and my in-laws were wonderful. My Father-in-Law died almost 6 years ago now, and he has been truly missed. This picture was taken in May with her daughter Patti and son Tom (my husband) Lil had just turned 83 on Sept. 9, here she is dancing in her wheelchair with her youngest grandson. She loved to dance and she loved her grandchildren more than anything. She was a tiny 5 ft tall ( 4 ft. 10 really lol, but she always told everyone she was 5 ft.) I remember one day she ask me to go buy her a pair of tennis shoes, when I ask her what size she told me size 3 I didn't believe her until she took off her shoes and showed me. I must have been around 17 at that time!!! She loved working in her flowers and the garden and that day just didn't want to leave to go get new ones!!! Back in the day her 6ft. 1 husband used to throw her threw his legs and above his head when they danced. I would have loved to have seen that. She was 87 lbs. when they married. But she could shoot a gun and fish with the best of them...

Wild flower gardens are increasing in popularity as gardeners in general are more in tune with nature. Charlie Dimmock and Alan Titchmarsh with television programmes such as Charlie's Wildlife Gardens, Ground Force, Gardeners' World and Charlie's Garden Army actively encourage gardeners to attract wildlife to their gardens and to grow wild flowers. As the countryside changes and diminishes many of us like to create a miniature countryside in our own gardens. The Popularity Of Flower Gardening
Organic Gardening For Beginners
Companion Planting Guide

Flower gardening has first started when farmers did not eliminate weeds from their crops because they liked their colors. The process marks the entire history of agriculture with farmers tolerating those weeds that seemed attractive to them. In comparison with food plants, flowers are known as companion plants that in time started to be grown separately in the garden. It was in the 19th century that flower gardening became popular in the United States and created favorable grounds for landscaping. Flower gardening has presently reached such an extent that there are corporations that pay for professional gardening services to change their garden every season in order to preserve a consistency in the color patterns. Flower gardening requires good knowledge of plant species, soil peculiarities, seeds, watering, fertilization and much more. And in terms of occupation, some people take flower gardening as a hobby why others have made a profession out of it. Flower gardening usually defines larger residences where many flowers are initially grown indoors so as to be then displayed outdoors. Fertile soil, lots of sunlight and good weather will make your garden grow and bloom most beautifully. Flower gardens sometimes complement herb gardens and ornamental vegetables. Many people enjoy such combinations.

The flower beds of Don and Pat Swink
Thomasville, North Carolina

Any warm day, spring, summer, or fall, you may catch a glimpse of lifelong Thomasville, NC resident, Pat Swink, traipsing through the local garden centers' crowded aisles of brightly colored blooms, her head down, fingers eagerly plucking the informative plastic picks, then replacing them, as she searches for the perfect plant for the perfect spot in her home flower beds. Red Europeana Climbing Rose
How it all started Now a grandmother, Pat remembers back to her childhood at this same address and similar climbing roses to the one pictured above. She and her twin sister, Pam, enjoyed picking at and sniffing the red buds, and their mama made many photos in front of the favored vines. In addition to roses, there were also chrysanthemums during fall, black-eyed Susans and rooster combs during summer, and during spring the shocking pink and the dazzling white azalea bushes that bloomed in unison with the white flowering dogwoods. White candytuft bloomed under and around the feet of the azaleas, making springtime a particularly beautiful time to be outside in the yard. The Grancy graybeard trees Pat's mom, Leora Deese, planted still stand, as do the evergreen redtips that lend a red and green background at the back width of the lot. Leora had also started a pink crepe myrtle that now spawns plenty of offspring, and they have been transplanted to line a fence along the left side of the backyard and the left side of the concrete driveway out front. Evergreen pine trees Pat's dad, Mickey Deese, planted as 4 inch bareroot seedlings now tower at 40 feet in the air.

A Good End
Every story has a beginning; in the case of this modest garden blog it was in February of 2005, with the bloom of the first snowdrop of the new garden year. Every story must also have an ending, and for An Iowa Garden, that day has arrived; it is a happy ending, though... I am not stopping because of ill health or a lack of stories or new plants to write about (I would say in the four years I've been writing this blog I've probably shown about a fourth of the plants in our garden). Rather, it is because of a lack of time; there are just not quite enough hours in the day, which I confess seems odd, since I retired from medicine six years ago, wondering how I would ever fill all my unaccustomed spare time.
I've made a lot of new friends through blogging, and have very much enjoyed meandering through other peoples' garden blogs too, and I hope a few folks have enjoyed following me about here in our garden, tucked in a small valley beside a pond, in a woods in eastern Iowa. This week the newest fawn is being paraded about by its proud mom, the young raccoons are discovering the challenge of shinnying up the birdfeeder pole in the dark of night, and the barred owls are hooting up and down the valley in the cool spring evenings. Seasons and years continue to unfold around and before me, and I feel deeply connected to all the wild creatures that share our land; and to the woods and to our garden in that woods. Living with (and in) nature can be occasionally exasperating, it can be funny or it can be very sad; but above all, it is a privilege. I have come to realize that the mark of a person can be measured by how they treat the least and most vulnerable of God's creatures.

If to paraphrase it a little bit, the same can be said about flowers . Imagine that you decorate the house with the flowers that you have grown up. Or present it to the closest people to whom such a gift will be doubly expensive and pleasant. If you want your garden to be unusually beautiful, you have to plant flowers in it. Flowers garden can please you by blossoming since early spring to the late fall. Already in the end of April daisies, pansies, forget-me-nots, crocuses hyacinths start blossom. In May
