is a form of dance usually performed to music from Israel , with specific dances choreographed to specific songs. The exact definition of Israeli folk dancing is debatable. The word folk has customarily been used to describe this kind of Israeli dancing because many of the dances are of a folk style reminiscent of dances from Eastern Europe or other parts of the Middle East . In addition to being influenced by folk dances from surrounding countries, many Israeli folk dances are also influenced by modern ballet. Also, unlike traditional folk dances from other countries that have usually been handed down from previous generations to the next and are without known creators, and perhaps even without documentation related to the particulars of a given dance or even specific music, Israeli folk dancing has come to life approximately in conjunction with the modern State of Israel. New dances have been created and introduced almost continuously in the more than 60 years since independence. In most of the dances, it is known who the creator is, and the dances are almost always associated with a specific piece of music.

In Austria, folk dances in general are known as Folkloretänze , i.e. "folklore dances", whereas the Austrian type of folk dance is known as Volkstanz (literally "folk dance"). Figure dancing is a type of dance where different figures are put together with a certain tune and given a name. Round dancing , which includes the waltz , the polka Zwiefacher etc, involves basic steps which can be danced to different tunes. Folk dancing - Definition
Folk Dancing is a general term for dances from various countries that are normally performed during social events by people with little or no professional training. Folk dances are often learned informally by the new dancer observing others dancing and then receiving help from others in learning the dance. Folk dances are often part of the social fabric of the country, and often have common features such that people familiar with folk dancing can often tell what country a dance is from even if they had not seen the particular dance before. Some countries have features that are unique to that country, although neighoring countries sometimes have similar features. For example, the German and Austrian schuhplattling dance consists of slapping the body and shoes in a fixed pattern, something that few other countries have. Folk dances sometimes evolved long before current political boundaries, so that certain dances are shared by several countries. For example, some Serbian, Bulgarian, and even Croatian dances share the same or similar dances, and sometimes even use the same name and music for those dances. Although folk dancing was originally done by the common people of the local culture, folk dancing has received some popularity on college campuses and community centers within the United States and other countries. Richard Thompson wrote a song about this group of people titled

They are not designed for public performance or the stage, although traditional folkdances may be later arranged and set for stage performances. Their execution is dominated by an inherited tradition rather than by innovation (although like all folk traditions they do evolve) New dancers often learn informally by observing others and/or receiving help from others.
More controversially, some people define folk dancing as dancing for which there is no governing body or dancing for which there are no competitive or professional performances.

Folk Dancing Cypriots love to dance! In Southern Cyprus folk dancing has a long and glorious past that is as much a part of society today as it was several hundred years ago. The Greek influence on folk dancing is unmistakable here, the country having embraced some of the oldest dances in the Greek world. But folk dances in Cyprus are unique. It is a quality that shines through and is a reflection of the assemblage of people and cultures that have graced this Mediterranean island over time. The Syrtos is the most popular folk dance on Cyprus. Also known as the Kalamatianos, the Syrtos is thought by many to represent the oldest dance in Cyprus and is led by both male and female dancers. There are several derivatives of the dance on the island, but all adopt a similar style that involves a circular group of dancers performing steps simultaneously holding each other at the wrist. Twelve basic steps are performed, while the lead dancer improvises at a pace and tempo to match. Another popular and altogether different folk dance in Cyprus is the Zeimbekikos. It heralds from the Thracian Greeks who populated the island in the 1800s. Originally an all-male dance, the Zeimbekikos is a dance embraced with gusto. There are basic steps to the dance around which dancers improvise. In some of the older versions of the Zeimbekikos displays of sword fighting from Thrace can be seen.

Llandovery Folk Dancing is an informal group of like-minded people who come together simply to enjoy folk dancing. Llandovery Folk Dancing have continued the pattern of monthly dancing sessions since 1994 when the group was formed. Dancing is usually of a British origin, (Welsh, English, or Scottish) with a variation of any of these on occasions, for example: Cornish or Manx. Further interest is gained, at times, with non- British styles, e.g Breton or an East European circle dance. We meet regularly on the third Friday of the month (except August) with only an occasional variation. Dancing starts around 7.30pm, with the Dolau Bran sessions finishing at about 10.30pm and the larger events continuing until later.

Folk Dancing and Health
by John Gratiot, M.D., Monterrey, California
From Let's Dance, September, 1951 F olk Dancing is primarily a form of entertainment and enjoyment, designed for normal, healthy individuals. Contrary to the general impression, which is given by its enthusiasts, folk dancing is not a curative solution to all ills, real or imaginary. I am not proposing this form of dancing as a healing cult, nor can miracles be promised to those who participate. There seems to be considerable evidence, however, that absorbing hobbies in general, and folk dancing in particular, can greatly benefit many people, both physically and mentally. Folk dancing differs from most creative hobbies in that it is one in which both husband and wife can participate, one in which they are beneficially interdependent, and one which promotes congeniality with many people outside of the imediate family. This brings up its obvious benefit to introverts, to self-centered individuals, and to shy people. Only those who have been in one of these groups can appreciate the tremendous pleasure at escaping from it. Self-conscious individuals do not enjoy being so. I can think of nothing which can so consistently and quickly aid these people. The spontaneous and contagious friendliness and helpfulness of those in a dancing group overcomes the novice's reluctance. He soon forgets his self-consciousness, becomes too absorbed to notice whether anyone is observing him, and, after a few sessions, has not only overcome his shyness but has become almost aggressive in his friendliness to others. This transformation is carried over into all his activities, at home, at work, and in his social life.

International folk dance
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search International folk dance is a genre of dance wherein selected folk dances from multiple ethnic groups are done by the same dancers, typically as part of a regular recreational dance club, for performances or at other events. The dances are typically considered the products of national or cultural traditions rather than part of an international tradition. International folk dancers need not be a member of any particular ethnicity. It is done for various purposes, typically for preservation, recreation , or performance . Groups that dance for different purposes tend to do dances differently, and to select different dances. Recreational dancers select and tend to alter the dances (often unintentionally) according to their own tastes, and as a result of the changes that inevitably occur as dances are passed on from one person to the next. Performers typically prefer dramatic, flamboyant, or athletic dances, and they often tend to dance with stylized techniques and exaggerated movements. Dances for performances are usually selected and choreographed for presentation on stage. Nevertheless there is substantial overlap between the dances done for recreation and performance. Some dancers of both types are often concerned with the preservation of a dance for its cultural value. Some recreational international folk dance groups also perform dances not strictly considered folk dances. These are dances which are
