The State Folk Dance Conspiracy: Fabricating a National Folk Dance
by Julie Mangin
Originally published in the Old-Time Herald , v.4(7) p.9-12, Spring 1995
Introduction
Modern Western square dance clubs are coordinating across the U.S. to have square dancing declared the state folk dance of all fifty states. At the time of this writing, there are twenty-two states that have passed legislation designating square dance as the "state folk dance." Many of these bills were passed after 1988, which was the last time that a bill was in the U.S. Congress to designate square dancing as the national folk dance. It appears that having failed on a national level, modern Western square dancers are trying to accomplish the same thing on a state by state basis. By contrast, traditional square dances are usually open to any member of the community, with no membership or certification required. Since most traditional communities get by with no more than a few dozen calls in their repertoire, lessons are not required, although some dances may feature a short workshop before the dance or "walk throughs" during the dance itself. The dancers wear street clothes, not square dance costumes. Finally, true folk dances are always linked to a folk music tradition. Recorded music is a rarity at traditional dances.

Since Biblical times, the Jewish people have expressed joy through dance. Throughout the centuries, dance has become a part of religious, communal, and family celebrations.
Modern Israeli dancing can be categorized in two genres. Folk dancing was brought to Israel by the early settlers. Art Dance has developed as a cultural activity with stage productions, created by professional choreographers and performed by trained dancers. Israeli Folk Dance Immigrants to Israel, in the 1920's, were exchanging Eastern European urban life for a life of collective farming in Palestine. They expressed their desire to return to the land through dance. Israeli folk dance, with barefoot dancers in loose clothing, leaping and running, reflects the life of a people returning to its own land. While originally from Europe, Israeli folk dance has been influenced by the traditional dances of different ethnic groups in Israel. Many dances are choreographed to modern Israeli music, which is a blend of western and middle eastern culture.

    http://www.lancashirefolk.co.uk/Folk_Dance_History.htm
FOLK DANCE HISTORY Written by Roy Smith of Hoghton Folk Dance Club Natural spontaneous behaviour on festive occasions has been the source of song, music and dance since time immemorial. Through years of performance English Folk Dance has become an established and recognised part of local tradition. Local inventiveness has developed its special characteristics so that the dance, like language, comes in many varieties. There have been several main strands to its development, social dancing (men and women together); Step dancing; Morris dancing; Sword dancing - and each of these strands can be further subdivided. In Medieval times people would 'carole' i.e. link hands in a line or a circle and sing as they danced to provide their own accompaniment. The introduction of musicians enabled them to save their breath somewhat! Other dance formations developed and social dances, even from Tudor times, have been preserved. Also available are many of the printed dance collections from the mid-seventeenth century onwards. Needless to say, at the time of the Commonwealth the Puritans considered dancing a sin and tried to stamp it out altogether. However, it is known that even Oliver Cromwell danced until the early hours of the morning at his daughter's wedding! We can read descriptions of certain country dances in the works of writers such as Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy. Although the Victorian era saw a shift towards couple dances brought in from the continent eg the waltz and the polka, there was a strong revival of interest in traditional English folk dance, song and music in the late nineteenth/early twentieth centuries with the work of Cecil Sharp and Mary Neal being of particular importance.
