Although folk dancing may be considered a nonprofessional activity, some people make their living by performing staged adaptations of folk dances.

Folk Dance I. Introduction Folk Dance , recreational or ceremonial dance performed usually by members of the community to which the dance is traditional. Varying criteria have been used to differentiate folk dance from other kinds of dance: For example, the dancers are said to belong to a certain economic level or come from certain locales; the steps are simple and repeated, so that any member of the community can participate; the dances require no audience; and they are passed down through many generations. Each of these criteria can be contradicted by dances that are indisputably folk dances, and in each of these criteria, folk dance overlaps with other kinds of dance. II. The Dancers III. Spectators Folk dance is usually viewed as being strictly for the pleasure of the participants, as not requiring an audience, and, despite the dancers' enjoyment, as often being of little interest to spectators. If participant pleasure is the only criterion, folk dance overlaps somewhat with much tribal dance and with modern social dance, for example, the waltz and the twist. Paradoxically, some traditional ritual and ceremonial dances, such as the English

For centuries, folk dancing has been part of almost every culture on the globe. Naturally, every region and diverse groups of people have developed their own special style of folk dancing. Folk dancing may be related to religious practices, to the seasons of the year or simply a response to simple country music. Folk dancing, whether it originates in eastern Europe or Ireland or South American countries, usually has a definite style and involves specific types of movement. It may be lively or more sedate, done individually or in groups or with a single partner. Folk dancing is often done wearing specific costumes, clothing which typifies the wear of the early developers of folk dancing. In the US, those who enjoy square dancing usually wear clothing typical of earlier country western styles, as this dance originated among frontier peoples. Square dancing is energetic and joyous. As the name implies, square dancing is executed by four sets of partners making a square formation, with specific dancing steps moving dancers around the square as they change partners and whirl about in a happy dancing mode. In some communities, square dancing is enjoyed more often by more people than conventional ballroom dancing.

A library of morris tunes from the traditions of a number of different English villages (mainly Adderbury and Bledington). abc format
http://ucowww.ucsc.edu/~sla/morris/music/abclib.html
An ABC Library of Morris Tunes
This is a library of morris tunes as used by dances in the traditions of a number of different English villages. A quick browse shows that I have just about everything for Adderbury and much of Bledington . These are the principal traditions danced by Seabright . The remaining selection of tunes is inspired by the favorite dances of other teams in the SF Bay area , the West Coast, Minnesota, Virginia, and anywhere else that I've had contact. Many of these tunes are derived from published collections. Others are transcribed from tapes of performances. Some tunes exist in multiple versions that demonstrate subtle differences between the performances of different musicians, or changes over time. In an effort to be sensitive to any rights of collectors, publishers, and performers, this library is intentionally provided in the form of individual tune files, not as a single file. Obviously a programmable WWW browser can snarf the entire lot; if you do so please do not redistribute them en masse. Each tune is stored in a dialect of the abc format developed by Chris Walshaw . Tunes in abc format are human-readable ASCII text , and each consists of roughly 200 to 1000 bytes. See my page of notes on
