    History of American football
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search An early American football team, from the turn of the twentieth century American football can be traced to early versions of rugby football . Both games have their origin in varieties of football played in the United Kingdom in the mid-19th century, in which a football is kicked at a goal and/or run over a line. American football resulted from several major divergences from rugby, most notably the rule changes instituted by Walter Camp , considered the "Father of American Football". Among these important changes were the introduction of the line of scrimmage and of down-and-distance rules. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, gameplay developments by college coaches such as Eddie Cochems Amos Alonzo Stagg Knute Rockne , and Glenn "Pop" Warner helped take advantage of the newly introduced forward pass . The popularity of collegiate football grew as it became the dominant version of the sport in the United States for the first half of the 20th century. Bowl games , a college football tradition, attracted a national audience for collegiate teams. Bolstered by fierce

HISTORY OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL Football historians, those who have studied the game and its origins, place the game’s beginnings in rugby, an English game played with many similarities to football. Rugby began in eighteen twenty-three at the famous Rugby Boys’ School in England. Another cousin of the game of football is soccer; its beginnings can also be traced to English origin, being played as early as the eighteen twenties. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: ITS BEGINNINGS At the same time, a group of students at Princeton began playing what was then known as ‘ballown’. First using their fists to advance the ball, and then their feet, this game consisted mainly of one goal: to advance the ball past the opposing team. There were no hard and fast rules applied to this earliest attempt at the game we now call football. At Harvard, the freshman and sophomore classes competed in a football-type game, played on the first Monday of each school year; this event came to be known as ‘Bloody Monday’ because of the roughness of the game. Pick up games, similar in style to that played on ‘Bloody Monday’, soon became popular on the Boston Common, catching on in popularity around eighteen sixty.

A revived version of Kemari being played at the Tanzan Shrine. The Japanese version of cuju is kemari (è¹´éž ), and was developed during the Asuka period. This is known to have been played within the Japanese imperial court in Kyoto from about 600 AD. In kemari several people stand in a circle and kick a ball to each other, trying not to let the ball drop to the ground (much like keepie uppie). The game appears to have died out sometime before the mid-19th century. It was revived in 1903 and is now played at a number of festivals.
These games and others may well go far back into antiquity. However, the main sources of modern football codes appear to lie in western Europe, especially England.

Welcome to SCOTTISHLEAGUE.NET - a FOOTBALL HISTORIES website. This site has been established by Scottish football historian David Ross. For over 30 years David has been searching through libraries, books, newspapers and magazines all over Britain compiling a comprehensive history of Scottish football.
On this website you will find some of the fruits of that search. Every side currently playing league football in Scotland is featured here with details of their past glories and, in some cases, their failures. League triumphs, Cup victories, relegation battles - all have a place on scottishleague.net. From Queen's Park winning the first Scottish Cup in 1874 to what's happening in 2010, this is a site dedicated to every aspect of Scottish football. And only football. There are a few football ads but no banner ads, no pop-ups, no distractions of any kind.
And every club has a place here. While the web overflows with Man Utd or Old Firm sites, there are few that focus on the other face of football - on the teams that face a constant struggle simply to survive. On scottishleague.net you will find out as much about Raith as about Rangers. And the site is updated regularly with new articles on the Scottish game on the Forum pages.

A Brief History of the Game
    Football’s Early Beginnings
Football (as well as rugby and soccer) are believed to have descended from the ancient Greek game of harpaston Harpaston is mentioned frequently in classical literature, where it is often referred to as a “very rough and brutal game“. The rules of this ancient sport were quite simple: Points were awarded when a player would cross a goal line by either kicking the ball, running with it across the goal line, or throwing it across the line to another player. The other team’s objective was simply to stop them by any means possible. There was no specific field length, no side line boundaries, no specified number of players per team, only a glaring lack of rules.
Most modern versions of football are believed to have originated from England in the twelfth century. The game became so popular in England that the kings of that time (Henry II and Henry IV) actually banned football. They believed that football was taking away interest from the traditional sports of England, such as fencing and archery.
Evolution and the Beginnings of Standardization
Football didn’t really begin to take on any consistency of rules and boundaries until it was picked up as a sport in the seven major public schools of England in the early 1800’s.
