    razing Stockpiled Forages
Oct 29, 2010 Every 30 days of grazing stockpiled forage provides a co t aving that is practically equivalent to increasing your calving rate by 8-10%! 30 days of winter feed is usually the minimum producers can expect from stockpiling forages like Tall fescue in the Southeast if both new growth and subsequent grazing are well managed. With fertilizer, production can be increased by 1,000-1,500 lbs./acre. This is for forages such as tall fescue and/or orchardgrass mixed with legumes like Red/White Clover or Alfalfa. Letting cows harvest the forage ( rather than making hay out of it ), and then feeding it to them, is where the obvious savings occur especially now that Diesel is on the rise AGAIN!

Steve started researching and testing various forage seeds (forage soybeans, wheats, oats, triticales, etc) to determine which grew the fastest and were the most palatable. Now Steve's company has a full line of forage-quality seeds and blends that perform with premium results. Along with providing quality seeds, Steve and OakHaven Forages offer wildlife consulting and wildlife habitat management throughout the southeastern United States. Forages are now an integral component in all aspects of ruminant nutrition, within the UK over 20 million tonnes are produced each year. Forages are now an integral component in all aspects of ruminant nutrition, within the UK over 20 million tonnes are produced each year. Pressures on the dairy sector to improve milk yields and increases in animal feedstuff prices has made it more important than ever for farmers to have accurate information about the nutritional values of their forages. As such forage analysis is a management tool needed for proper livestock nutrition. Forage quality changes through age and storage, but by testing forage on a regular basis throughout the season, the ration can be kept finely tuned in order to maximise its effective usage. Minerals make up between 3 -5% of an animals bodyweight and with the correct balance being obtained through the diet (feed plus mineral supplement) therefore it is equally important to important to obtain an accurate analysis of forages for their mineral content. Sciantec has over 30 years experience in testing forages for nutrition and minerals and is a founder member of the FAA (Forage Analysis Assurance group (FAA). Key aspects of the Sciantec forage testing service include:

Forage is plant material (mainly plant leaves and stems) eaten by grazing livestock. Forages are environmentally friendly in that they can reduce soil erosion, pesticide usage, and fertilizer application. In addition, forages can increase soil structure and organic matter and enhance agricultural profitability. Forerunner
Triticale Forerunner Triticale is an awnless forage variety of triticale. It is an excellent choice for silage, hay or grazing. Forerunner can grow to 50-60 inches for forage purposes with good straw strength. Stems are soft and highly palatable. Lower leaves stay green and remain attached the full growing season. The leaves on Forerunner are broad and long, providing a very good leaf/stem ratio. Forerunner should be cut for silage ay heading stage for maximum nutritional value. In some areas, Forerunner can be double cut with proper management. Forerunner is resistant to current races of stem and leaf rust and being long season variety Forerunner has a wide window for harvest. Forerunner works well in both fall and early spring plantings. Forerunner Triticale is a PVP variety.

    Magnum 2000
Oats Magnum 2000 Oats are a very high yielding forage oat, often out yielding other forage oats by as much as 2 tons/acre. Magnum 2000 Oats stool out well and grow extremely tall, up to 7 ft., and have a very wide dark green leaf. Magnum 2000 Oats are a smaller seeded variety thus enabling reduced seeding rates of 70-80 lbs/acre versus 100-120 lbs/acre for many other forage oats. We look forward to the release of the next generation of Magnum oats :Magnum Plus" available fall of 2010. Magnum 2000 is a PVP variety.
