Fundamentals of Forensic Science
Forensic science is great novelty of solving difficult problems of a crime in which involves analytical, critical and logical thinking. It takes certain depth of knowledge and several years of related experience to become an outstanding forensic scientist. Similarly to other science fields, discoveries of science and technology enhance the investigation process in order to find reliable clues and evidence that lead to the solution key for various criminal cases. Therefore, it has created an excitement of tracking down suspects of a crime based on scientific evaluation of experienced forensic staffs. It is consider as a mainstream study field as amateur forensic science enthusiasts have increased and handfuls of them have keen interest at earning a forensic science degree via accredited institutions. In Forensic Science Essentials.com, you will be able to understand:

    FORENSIC SCIENCE
Forensic science involves the application of hard science and technology to the solution and prosecution of crime. Based upon the underlying principle that the criminal leaves part of himself at the scene, and takes part of the crime site with him, forensic science includes the identification and analysis of physical evidence in the form of impressions, trace evidence, and weaponry. Since physical evidence needs to be interpreted by an expert, it is, by definition, circumstantial. Fields of forensic science include: fingerprint technology, scientific lie detection, firearms identification, questioned documents, and forensic pathology, toxicology, chemistry, botany, entomology, anthropology, geology, and serology (DNA). Jim Fisher has extensively researched the history of forensic science. Presented here are selected writings by Jim on the history of forensic science. Forensic Science: A Small Part in a Big Play

The word forensic comes from the Latin word "foren" or to debate. Generally, when a science is brought into the courtroom, it becomes a "forensic science." Or, a science that is being used to determine the outcome of an issue in court. However, many different disciplines such as accounting often end up used to determine matters in court. Those, also, become a "forensic." Here, at the forensic science website you can explore forensic science in general, forensic science jobs and employment, various forensic science article and browse a large selection of forensic science books. 40. Biometrics: Fingerprint
About fingerprint matching, classification, and image enhancement, from Michigan State University.
    http://biometrics.cse.msu.edu/fingerprint.html
    Fingerprint Identification
    By Salil Prabhakar, Anil Jain
Fingerprint Matching: Among all the biometric techniques, fingerprint-based identification is the oldest method which has been successfully used in numerous applications. Everyone is known to have unique, immutable fingerprints. A fingerprint is made of a series of ridges and furrows on the surface of the finger. The uniqueness of a fingerprint can be determined by the pattern of ridges and furrows as well as the minutiae points. Minutiae points are local ridge characteristics that occur at either a ridge bifurcation or a ridge ending.
Fingerprint matching techniques can be placed into two categories: minutae-based and correlation based. Minutiae-based techniques first find minutiae points and then map their relative placement on the finger. However, there are some difficulties when using this approach. It is difficult to extract the minutiae points accurately when the fingerprint is of low quality. Also this method does not take into account the global pattern of ridges and furrows. The correlation-based method is able to overcome some of the difficulties of the minutiae-based approach. However, it has some of its own shortcomings. Correlation-based techniques require the precise location of a registration point and are affected by image translation and rotation.
Fingerprint matching based on minutiae has problems in matching different sized (unregistered) minutiae patterns. Local ridge structures can not be completely characterized by minutiae. We are trying an alternate representation of fingerprints which will capture more local information and yield a fixed length code for the fingerprint. The matching will then hopefully become a relatively simple task of calculating the Euclidean distance will between the two codes.
