Fingerprint History Chapter from The Fingerprint Sourcebook
The History of Fingerprints
Updated 28 October 2010
Why Fingerprint Identification?
Fingerprints offer an infallible means of personal identification. That is the essential explanation for their having supplanted other methods of establishing the identities of criminals reluctant to admit previous arrests. The science of fingerprint Identification stands out among all other forensic sciences for many reasons, including the following:
  • Has served all governments worldwide during the past 100 years to provide accurate identification of criminals. No two fingerprints have ever been found alike in many billions of human and automated computer comparisons. Fingerprints are the very basis for criminal history foundation at every police agency on earth.
  • Established the first forensic professional organization, the International Association for Identification (IAI), in 1915.
  • Established the first professional certification program for forensic scientists, the IAI's Certified Latent Print Examiner program (in 1977), issuing certification to those meeting stringent criteria and revoking certification for serious errors such as erroneous identifications.

http://www.shodor.org/workshops/forensic/
Forensic Science is the application of the scientific method to solving mysteries. Forensic scientists draw on skills from a number of disciplines in order to gather evidence and draw conclusions about an event. Teachers may use the subject of forensic science to stimulate interest in the various disciplines of science among their students. The discipline is particularly useful in the classroom because it emphasizes hands-on learning and gives students the opportunity to develop their reasoning skills. Many of the activities on this site use computers and computational science. Such methods are useful to forensic scientists because they allow scientists to view evidence with greater clarity, to simulate specific events and to save time by automating tedious processes. Lesson Plans
Suggested lesson plans you can use in the classroom including worksheets and handouts. Skills
One of the most useful tools a scientist has is the ability to reason. Logic skills are important in all fields of scientific inquiry. The activitivies on this page are designed to help students practice their observation skills, recognize the subjective nature of the human mind, and learn methods of reasoning. Lab Experiments
Another tool in the forensic scientists arsenal is a grounded understanding in the basic sciences. Principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology and even entymology aid in collecting and interpreting evidence. Students can experiment with the technical methods used in forensic science using these hands-on labs.

Forensics or forensic science is the application of science to questions which are of interest to the legal system. For example, forensic pathology is the study of the human body to determine cause and manner of death. Criminalistics is the application of various sciences to answer questions relating to examination and comparison of biological evidence, trace evidence, impression evidence, drugs and firearms. Forensic odontology is the study of the uniqueness of dentition, and forensic toxicology is the study of drugs and poisons, and their effects on the human body.
Sherlock Holmes, the fictional character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was, in fact, the inspiration for forensic science. Decades later, the comic strip, Dick Tracy also featured the detective using a considerable number of forensic methods although sometimes the methods were more fanciful. The popular television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation depicts a glamorized version of the activities of forensic scientists. Visit the Forensics entry from the Wikipedia for more information.

Forensic Science
Forensic science has recently been thrust into the public eye through media exposure. New technologies have enabled cold cases to be revisited and solved. Past convictions have been re-examined and innocent people have been released based on new forensic techniques. This has led to an increased demand for the use of forensic science and for qualified forensic scientists.
As our curriculum is targeted at training forensic scientists, it is heavy in the natural sciences. The undergraduate program offers the ability to double-major in a science, and many of our students have elected to do so, receiving a B.S. in forensic science and a B.S. in chemistry or biology upon graduation. The graduate program offers two concentrations: criminalistics for the crime laboratory analyst, and advanced investigation for investigators wishing to have a strong background in forensic science.
Both the undergraduate and graduate programs place students in experiential learning. Students are involved in the real world of forensic science through internships in laboratories around the world or through scientific research targeting pressing questions. In addition, many of our graduate students volunteer their time, through a program sponsored by the

http://www.grafex.co.za/
Member of American Handwriting Analysis Foundation WELCOME to our website, we hope you will enjoy your stay Handwriting analysis The Forensic Handwriting Examiner specialized in handwriting identification, is a technician of handwriting examination. Applying scientific principles, the Forensic Handwriting Examiner analyses and evaluates the evidence discovered and reaches reasonable and
valid opinions, writes reports, and gives testimony when needed to aid the client or court to arrive at the truth. The validity and importance of handwriting patterns in questioned documents work have been established for many years. Questioned Document Examiners are concerned with the examination of documents to establish authenticity, or lack of authenticity, or authorship. Through scientific examination of the physical features of documents the examiner may discover alterations, and / or deletions; decipher obliterations; develop indented writing impressions; determine authorship. Handwriting Analysis (Graphology) does not fall into the realm of the esoteric, it is a scientific examination of the strokes and impulses that are transmitted directly from the brain via the motor neuron system to the hand holding the pen. The writing strokes are directly influenced by the state of mind at the time of writing and the inherent personality of the writer. It has been proved that if one uses the foot, forehead or any other means to write, after undergoing the necessary period of training, writing would portray the same characteristics related to the psychological make-up of the writer.
