Ely Resorts and Ely Outfitters for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness welcome you to Ely and to ElyMinnesota.com , your virtual gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the BWCAW. What a wonderful summer we’ve had and fall looks every bit as promising.
Ely resorts and outfitters cater to all those who enjoy canoeing, fishing, the Boundary Waters and all nature here in the Northland.  And this is still the season for the mighty walleye as well as the fall garden harvest. This picture is a White Admiral Butterfly on one of the sunflowers in our garden.  The gardens have been blessed with plenty of water and sun this summer and are producing abundantly.  Join us at the Ely Farmers Market on Tuesday evenings to purchase locally grown produce, flowers, baked goods and crafts.  More people are discovering this local bounty and quality each year.  It is well worth the stop and see on your next trip to Ely
Although the unusual Spring scattered the Walleyes and frustrated even the pros, fishing has settled into a more normal pattern as the summer progressed.  As fishermen were forced to try new tactics and fish in unfamiliar territory, record catches have been reported from the lakes and streams in and around the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.  Another good reason to consult with one of our local Ely Resorts or Ely Outfitters: Even in hard times they can guide you to the BWCA experience of a lifetime.

The measures underscore longstanding concerns that the agency does not have enough trained staff to handle a summer with severe and widespread forest fires.

Forest Fires
Forest Fires: Their Effect on the Forests of Eastern North America The forests of eastern North America exhibit considerable variation in both their composition and their response to natural fire. As one progresses from north to south, these forests range from boreal and mixed coniferhardwood to deciduous. Throughout this range, forest fire can have a number of different effects. Fire is a natural force which is actually required by the many dynamic processes of forest regeneration (Ripper, 1989, p. 36). Forest fire purges mature forests of various pests (Brosnahan, 1990, p. 69). For example, smoke kills the Tussock moth and spruce bud worm (Ripper, 1989, p. 36). Fire also converts tree needles and other forest floor debris into nutrientrich beds. These areas promote the growth of seedlings. Finally, many plant species actually incorporate periodic conflagration into their reproductive cycles. The primary cause of natural fires is lightning (Johnson, 1992, p. 6). In some areas, it accounts for 90% of areas burned. In order for a large fire to occur, a number of circumstances must be present (Johnson, 1992, p. 11). For one, the wood fuels must be dry enough to burn. Then, there must be ignition. Finally, wind is usually necessary for fire spread.

Why Foresters Prefer to Fight Fire With Fire
By TIMOTHY EGAN
United States Forest Service After the Big Burn, in 1910. Fires aren't always as bad as they look, forest experts say. EATTLE Exactly ninety years ago, on Aug. 20, 1910, in the choking heat of a summer without rain in the northern Rockies, the sun disappeared from the sky and a sound not unlike cannon fire began rattling throughout Montana and Idaho. The Big Burn, as the 3-million-acre firestorm of 1910 was called, eventually consumed entire towns, killed 87 people and burned a lesson into the fledgling U.S. Forest Service. Thereafter, the service vowed, it would snuff out every fire, at one point swearing to do so by 10 a.m. on the day after the fire started. The best-known forester of that time, Gifford Pinchot, equated wildfire with slavery as a historic scourge of the nation. Another, Bernhard Fernow, blamed "bad habits and loose morals" for the fires. Now, in the midst of the worst wildfire year in nearly half a century, a new round of finger-pointing is under way. Touring Montana last week, House Speaker Dennis Hastert blamed the Clinton administration for not logging the tinder-dry forests. Environmentalists pointed at the timber industry and development for altering forest ecology and creating an artificial landscape ripe for catastrophe. But the Forest Service remains focused on its own primary culprit: the symbol of fire eradication, Smokey the Bear.

... Information System Forest Fires The thick haze caused by Forest Fires, covering major parts of Indonesia and Malaysia during the dry season, are presently a hot item in discussions concerning environmental impacts. The haze has a strong polluting effect, has a bad smell and causes severe distress for persons with respiration problems. It is claimed that the fires also have a world wide greenhouse effect. Photo: (below). Thick haze caused by Fires in Bush Land and Marshes on Dolak Island, Papua (Frederik Hendrik Island) in December 1982. What causes the Fires? Land Clearing Activities The latest haze problems caused by fires were recorded in January/February 2000 in Riau and Jambi provinces, Sumatra. These fires were related to land clearing activities for new oilpalm and pulp wood plantations in these two provinces. These new oilpalm and pulp wood plantations are mainly found in the low uplands on the east coast which are easily accessible, but recently they are more and more also found in the Tidal Lowlands. Although a very important cause of the present fire/haze problems, these land clearing activities are not the only cause of the forest fires.
