Fire: Man's friend, foe, ... or god?
Beginning when the earliest humans first rubbed two sticks together, or hit flint against stone, or grasped a burning limb and captured flickering yellow flames, fire has fascinated mankind. Fire was deemed so important to some early civilizations that they worshiped it as a god. The Greek philosophers of long ago considered it one of the four essential elements, along with water, earth, and air. By controlling fire, we could see in the darkness, cook food, keep warm in winter, and clear forests to plant crops and keep the marauding animals at bay. But fire is also dangerous. It rages when out of control, it can destroy our homes, our communities, the crops and forests we depend upon for survival, recreation, and knowledge. Which came first, the lightning or the forest?

Geophysical Disaster Computational Fluid Dynamics Centre
Faculty of Science - University of British Columbia
Home Location Overview Research ... Products Mission To save lives and minimize economic losses caused by weather-related disasters including avalanches, forest fires, windstorms, cyclones, floods, debris flows, air pollution, and greenhouse gases. Focus Disasters affecting mountainous, coastal regions, such as western Canada. Approach Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), where we use massively-parallel computers to solve the equations describing the atmosphere. These solutions will be made for a sequence of telescoping regions that zoom in from the large (100-1000 km) "synoptic" scales of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), through the medium (10-100 km)"mesoscales" of storm prediction and mountain topography, to the fine (0.1-10 km) "microscales" of turbulence. Research Both pure research, to better understand weather predictability and disaster physics, and applied research to make daily forecasts of weather and disasters. Sponsors The Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund (BC KDF), and the Blusson foundation (UBC).

86. Aiton Heights Fire Tower
Site devoted exclusively to one structure in Itasca State Park the observation tower on Aiton Heights. History, photos, map.
http://www.paulbunyan.net/itasca/
Welcome to the Aiton Heights Forest Fire Tower. The Information here will give you an idea of what the actual site looks like and invite you to visit this location while at Itasca Park.............. On most good weather days, there will be a on site interpreter. Dave Quam will share some of the Ation Heights Fire Tower History, along with stories of the present. Bring a lunch and stay awhile. The site has three very sturdy picnic tables and no bears to steal your sandwich Oh yes, there is a one half mile road walk from the parking lot up to the fire tower and Up hill. Bring two sandwiches! (photo from inside a fire tower cab with the fire finder in the middle, the vertical sites are called the Alidade.) This is a rare collection of old fire tower photos, some from 1920 's post cards. Each has it's own story and during the presentation a select few will be told. How the fire tower worked using a fire finder and fire map to locate fires will be demonstrated. The kids will have a chance to work both. Come joins us to learn of towers of the past / present and enjoy the view over Itasca Park..... For those who do not want to climb, there is a "crows nest" cab on the ground. This cab is the same as the one on the top of the tower with an addition of interruptive signs.

Temagami Fire Tower
Climb the Temagami's Fire Tower on Caribou Mountain... A natural high!
On August 9, 1998 the newly restored Temagami Fire Tower was opened and dedicated to the Ministry of Natural Resources' Forest Rangers. The aerial view shows the two viewing platforms, one with a replica of the cupola on top of the tower, for those that don't like heights. There is also an Interpretive Centre located close to the parking lot, which houses information about the Forest Rangers. The original tower was erected just a few metres to the east of the present site on Caribou Mountain in 1910. It was built of square timber design and was 45 feet high. In the late 1930's this tower was demolished and a new 85 foot light steel tower erected. Due to rusting, this tower was demolished and sent over the side of the cliff face in 1961. With the old 85 foot tower removed, a 100 foot high steel tower was erected the same year by seven Forest Rangers. There were nine towers in the area manned by Forest Rangers with field glasses, a detailed map and an alidade and azimuth, to pinpoint the exact location of a fire. The Temagami Fire Tower was last used 25 years ago to spot fires and for the past 47 years has been a part of Temagami's skyline, greeting the sunrise each morning (pictured above).

The Director of Forest Engineering and Industry Services is responsible for the Fire Suppression Program for the Forest Resources.  Field delivery is provided under the direction of the Regional Ecosystem Director using infrastructure established in the regional and district offices.
Over the years, the Department has improved its capability to suppress wildfires in the Province. Changes in the way the Department handles wildfire began in 1961 after a disastrous year. Following a very dry summer, extensive areas of Eastern and Central Newfoundland were ravaged by fire. In contrast, 1981 was even dryer but in part due to the introduction of new technology such as a Lightning Detection System, computerized decision support system, the use of fire fighting foam, better training of fire staff, the purchase of six (6) CL-215 Air Tankers and new systems and procedures such as aircraft alert codes, the Province was able to limit forest fire losses to a minimum.
