Forestry Forests are important for a number of reasons. One is the direct correlation between healthy forests and high-quality streams. It has been documented that, as forested buffer strips are reduced, water quality declines. Protecting, maintaining, and even creating new forested corridors along streams is essential to protecting the vitality of our water resources. Professional forestry assistance is available through the District to help woodland owners reach their management objectives while sustaining the productivity and natural beauty of the forest. The District works with private woodland owners, foresters, loggers, developers, and various agencies to provide and help implement appropriate conservation plans.
Some of the woodland management services include:
  • Woodland Examination - determine the quality and quantity of trees and any problems that might exist through an on-site inventory and evaluation.

THE RISE OF AMERICAN FORESTRY:
FROM EDUCATION TO PRACTICE
Thanks to a grant from the State Library of North Carolina, North Carolina ECHO (Exploring Cultural Heritage Online) in 2001, this two-phase project created an online resource for research and information on the history of forestry in the state of North Carolina. The partners - the North Carolina State University Libraries' Special Collections Research Center, the Biltmore Company in Asheville, the Forest History Society in Durham, and the University of North Carolina at Asheville - established this web site to provide access to digital collections of rare and unique items for the general public, students and scholars.

The Division of Forestry works to protect the forests that cover half the state and provides more than 60,000 jobs. Forests help promote clean water, wildlife habitat and recreation. The Division of Forestry extinguishes the more than 2,500 fires that burn each year and helps control the diseases and insects that plague our forests. Since trees provide energy savings and storm water reduction and add scenic beauty, the division is also working to market the benefits of adding trees to urban areas.
