The management of forests is known as forestry silviculture , and forest management . A forest ecosystem is a natural woodland unit consisting of all plants, animals and micro-organisms ( Biotic components ) in that area functioning together with all of the non-living physical ( abiotic ) factors of the environment. Redwood tree in northern California redwood forest, where many redwood trees are managed for preservation and longevity. Forest ecology is one branch of a biotically-oriented classification of types of ecological study (as opposed to a classification based on organizational level or complexity, for example population or community ecology ). Thus, forests are studied at a number of organizational levels, from the individual organism to the ecosystem. However, as the term

Post-Disturbance Aboveground Biomass Accumulation In Global Secondary Forests
Ecology May, 2000 by Christine M. Johnson Daniel J. Zarin Arthur H. Johnson
CHRISTINE M. JOHNSON [1] DANIEL J. ZARIN [2,3] ARTHUR H. JOHNSON [1] Key words: biomass accumulation, aboveground; chronosequence studies; climate; plant productivity; secondary forests; soil texture. INTRODUCTION Chronosequence, nutrient cycling, site index, fertilization, and modeling studies have found that biomass production following severe disturbance is a function of a number of variables including stand age, growingseason length, growing-season temperature, soil-moisture availability, nutrient availability, disturbance size, and disturbance intensity. Process-based models have had considerable success in combining these factors to explain biomass accumulation and/or net productivity at the stand level (e.g., Aber and Federer 1992, Landsberg and Waring 1997). Continental and global-scale analyses indicate that climate indices alone can serve as valuable predictors of biomass production (Rosenzweig 1968, Lieth 1973, Whittaker 1975, O'Neill and DeAngelis 1981, Gholz 1982, Webb et al. 1983). In some regional-scale studies (e.g., Post and Curtis 1970), climatic and soil physical properties (soil drainage class and indicators of growing-season degree-days) were found to be good predictors of site index without additional variation explained by soil-nutrient status. In other regional-scale studies, species characteristics (photosynthetic efficiency, carbon allocation strategies; Webb et al. 1983, Fassnacht and Gower 1997) and soil-nutrient status (Van Cleve et al. 1983, Bonan and Van Cleve 1992, Reich et al. 1997) have been found to be important controls on productivity.

Welcome to the Florida 4-H Forest Ecology Website!
Here you can identify and learn more about the dominant trees and companion plants in eight different forest ecosystems in Florida. Information about forest wildlife, forest insects, and forest diseases is also included. This site is brought to you by the School of Forest Resources and Conservation at the University of Florida Florida is a botanical paradise, with tropical plants in south Florida, and Appalachian species in north Florida. The biodiversity here is phenomenal! That also means that wherever you are, it will be hard to learn ALL of Florida's trees by hiking outdoors. If you live in the north, for example, you'll have to learn about Gumbo Limbo and Saltwort on this website.
This site has been designed to accompany the Florida 4-H Ecology Contest and 4-H Forest Project Books . You don't have to be a 4-H'er to use it, though. Everyone is encouraged to explore Florida's forests, both outdoors and on the web.

Multidisciplinary studies integrate the basic and applied science for applications to manage the boreal forests in a sustainable way. The Centre was established at the beginning of 2000. It is located in the University of Joensuu, Finland, and it is based on the collaborative studies of the research groups working in the Faculty of Forestry and Department of Biology. The Centre provides a research network which links the studies carried out by about 25 senior scientists and 15 junior scientists and post docs and 50 PhD students working in several universities and research institutes in Finland and abroad. The Centre of Excellence for Forest Ecology and Management is based on the collaborative studies of four research teams with the following research topics:
Dynamics and Modelling of the Functioning and Structure of Forest Ecosystem, Sustainability of the Forest Production and Climate Change; Biodiversity of Forest Ecosystems: Patterns, Processes and Ecosystem Functioning; Atmospheric Impacts on Tree-herbivore Relationships and Ecosystem Processes; Herbivory in Relation to Variable Defences of Northern Woody Plants.

Welcome to the conference website for Northern Primeval Forests Final update before prifor2010 (2010-07-30) The Prifor2010 conference is close in time and we as organizers are looking forward to meet you all! A map is available showing hotels and venue. - The registration at Mid Sweden University will be open from 16.00-19.00 on Sunday evening, and from 08.30 to the end of the lectures during the week. - Arrival:
    • Coming by train you will arrive to the station that is located only 5-10 minutes’ walk to the city centre and about 20-30 minutes’ walk to the venue at Mid Sweden University. Coming by domestic flight you will arrive at Midlanda airport, serving both the cities of Sundsvall and Härnösand. There are airport buses connecting most flight with Sundsvall city center and of course also taxi service. From the city center bus no. 1 takes you to the venue at Mid Sweden University and bus no. 3 goes up to the Sidsjö area. Note that the local buses depart from the bus station and not from the railway station. The local buses do not accept cash so either you pay with your credit card or buy a bus card at the bus station (“Navet”).
    - Presentations:
    • Posters should, as earlier informed, not exceed A0 format, i.e. 85x120 cm. The posters will be exposed during all of the conference and a special session on Tuesday afternoon is devoted to the posters. Please be present by your poster during this session. At the registration you will receive information on where to put your poster and you are responsible for putting it up and taking it down. Needles and other material for the posters will be available.
