A copy of the license is included in the section entitled ``GNU Free Documentation License''. This file contains the text of Professional Programmer's Guide to Fortran77 published by Pitman in 1988. The book is now long out of print, so it seemed sensible to make the text freely available over the Internet. The ISO Standard for Fortran77 is, of course, now obsolete, since Fortran90 and Fortran95 have replaced it. I strongly recommend using Fortran95 as a multitude of features have been added to Fortran which make programming easier and programs more reliable. One of the attractions of Fortran77 is that a good free compiler exists in the form of GNU Fortran, g77. At present I don't know of any free compilers for full Fortran95, but you can download a compiler for a subset language called F, which seems an excellent way to learn modern Fortran. Unfortunately this book will not be much help with F or Fortran95. Perhaps some day I may get time to revise it completely. For more information on Fortran (and F) see these web-sites, which have links to many others:

The following is a collection of the projects I completed during said class; they range from simple I/O programs to data structure manipulation programs. Documentation for these programs is also provided where available. All programs were compiled using Absoft's Fortran compiler for Windows, and as such I can only guarantee successful compilation on that platform. If you've had success or failure with other compilers, please send me a note regarding it. I'm mainly making this code available because I was appalled by the lack of Fortran examples there are on the web. If you need further help with the language, I'd recommend obtaining a copy of the Fortran 90 Handbook (ISBN 0070004064); it's particularly useful when trying to figure out the archaic I/O and formatting options. FORTRAN Programming
One of the oldest programming languages, the FORTRAN was developed by a team of programmers at IBM led by John Backus, and was first published in 1957. FORTRAN stands for ‘Formula Translation’.
It was the first successful high-level program, which was created in the 1950s to help scientists, engineers, and mathematicians write programs that could describe complex situations in nuclear science, Aviation technology and other strategic fields of research. It was very useful because it was designed to allow easy translation of math formulas into code.
In 1966 the language was standardized and FORTRAN IV was born. Since its creation FORTRAN has been used for designing of bridges, aero planes, factory automation systems and the analysis of scientific data etc.

There are six FORTRAN files in the SLEIGN2 package: In addition there are two TEXT files: and three PDF files: All of these files can be downloaded by clicking on the links above. To run one of the examples in the xamples.f file in an UNIX environment with a FORTRAN compiler, enter the following command: f77 xamples.f drive.f sleign2.f -o xamples.x This will create the executable file xamples.x and two object files drive.o and sleign2.o. Now run xamples.x whenever you want to work an example from the list of examples in the xamples.f file. To run your own problem proceed as follows:
    • Step1: Enter the command f77 makepqw.f -o makepqw.x
    • Step2: Run makepqw.x (This interactive program will ask you for a file name - this must end in .f - for example, if your chosen problem has the name bloggs then enter bloggs.f). This file, after makepqw.x has been run, will contain the subroutines for p,q,w and, if necessary, the functions u and v which are used to define singular limit-circle boundary conditions at one or both end-points.
    • Step3: Enter the command f77 bloggs.f drive.f sleign2.f -o bloggs.x

    • Instructor : Prof. Paul Tackley, room NO H9.1, ptackley@ethz.ch, 044 633-2758 Schedule : NO F39, 10:15-12:00 Thursdays from 24.09-17.12.2009, excluding 23.09 and 04.11.2008 (12 classes) Grading : 2/3 weekly assignments; 1/3 a semester project - writing a program for a scientific application to be agreed upon individually. Description : FORTRAN 95 is a modern programming language that is specifically designed for scientific and engineering applications. This course gives an introduction to programming in this language, and is suitable for students who have only minimal programming experience, for example with MATLAB scripts. The focus will be on Fortran 95, but Fortran 77 will also be covered for those working with already-existing codes. A hands-on approach will be emphasised rather than abstract concepts, using example scientific problems relevant to Earth science. Computing requirements : A computer is needed during lectures. The majority of students prefer to bring their own laptop with a suitable Fortran95 compiler installed (see below). There are also a few Linux PCs and MacOSX workstations available in the classroom. A computer is also needed to finish the weekly assignments. Books etc .: There is no required book. Class notes (posted here each week) + free online tutorials listed below + a free reference manual (such as the one listed below downloadable as PDF from Intel) might be sufficient. If you would like a book, two that get good reviews are: "Fortran 95/2003 for Scientists and Engineers" by Stephen J. Chapman (published by McGraw Hill), or "Fortran 95/2003 Explained" by Michael Metcalf, John Reid, and Malcolm Cohen (published by Oxford University Press). There are earlier versions of both of these - with 90/95 in the title rather than 95/2003 - that are equally suitable here and you may be able to find used/second hand. Alternatively, look in a good technical bookstore for something that seems well written and easy to follow.
