Petroleum Contents Petroleum Petroleum, or "crude oil," is a liquid fuel that is present in various locations throughout the world. It has many uses, from the generation of electricity to the manufacture of medicines, plastics, and other commercial items. Much like coal, petroleum is formed from the remains of biodegraded organic material. When animals that lived in the sea millions of years ago died underwater, their remains were gradually covered by layers of very fine dirt known as "silt" on the ocean floor. Then, as the years passed, pressure from the layers built up and compressed the organic material, forming the oil. Petroleum has many different "viscosities," or thicknesses. The viscosity depends on the amount of gases and solids that are present in the oil. Often, natural gas is disolved in the liquid and can be extracted for other uses. Petroleum take three main forms: paraffin, asphaltic, and mixed-base. These forms are based upon the chemical makeup of the hydrocarbon-based oil.

MASTER THE BASICS OF PLASTICS RECYCLING
by Deborah Mitchell Plastics recycling can seem confusing, but overcoming any challenges is important, especially because plastic is made from nonrenewable and increasingly expensive fossil fuels (petroleum and/or natural gas), and because discarded plastics occupy about 25 percent of landfill space. Consumers like plastic products because they are usually light and convenient. But plastic has downsides:
  • plastic requires large amounts of energy to manufacture plastic contributes to solid waste pollution plastic contains chemicals that can infiltrate foods and negatively impact health
To reduce solid waste, some have proposed biodegradable plastic. This plastic contains 5 percent vegetable oil or cornstarch, which bacteria consume, causing the plastic to disintegrate. But landfills prevent degradation, so bacteria often cant do their work, and plastics remain in landfills. Biodegradable plastic cannot be recycled because the organic matter contaminates the quality of recycled plastics. Photodegradable plastic, which needs sun exposure to break down, is usually covered by waste and cant decompose. Reducing plastic use is the main goal, but because plastic products will be around for many years, plastics recycling needs to be easier. Currently, rates of plastics recycling in the United States are behind those of other items, such as newspaper (about 80%) and cardboard (about 70%); one reason is that consumers don't understand which plastics they can recycle in their area. Types of plastics are assigned a number, which is usually stamped or printed on the bottom of containers and surrounded by a pyramid of arrows.

Fossil fuel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Coal, one of the fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are fuels formed by natural resources such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms . The age of the organisms and their resulting fossil fuels is typically millions of years, and sometimes exceeds 650 million years. The fossil fuels, which contain high percentages of carbon , include coal, petroleum, and natural gas. Fossil fuels range from volatile materials with low carbon hydrogen ratios like methane , to liquid petroleum to nonvolatile materials composed of almost pure carbon, like anthracite coal . Methane can be found in hydrocarbon fields, alone, associated with oil, or in the form of methane clathrates . It is generally accepted that they formed from the fossilized remains of dead plants and animals by exposure to heat and pressure in the Earth's crust over millions of years. This biogenic theory was first introduced by Georg Agricola in 1556 and later by Mikhail Lomonosov in the 18th century. It was estimated by the Energy Information Administration that in 2007 primary sources of energy consisted of petroleum 36.0%, coal 27.4%, natural gas 23.0%, amounting to an 86.4% share for fossil fuels in primary energy consumption in the world.

Eco-Friendly Sources of Energy
By Mark Kennan eHow Contributor updated: February 4, 2010 I want to do this! What's This?
  • According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, fossil fuelspetroleum, natural gas, and coalaccounted for almost 85 percent of the energy used in the United States in 2008. However, these energy sources are nonrenewable and release greenhouse gases which are linked to global warming. An increasing emphasis has been placed on developing eco-friendly energy sources, such as solar, wind, and hydropower.
  • Solar
  • Solar energy uses the energy from the sun in two ways: to generate heat, and to directly convert the sun's energy to electricity. Solar power that is used for heat can warm homes, pools, and other structures, or the heat can be used to create steam which spins turbines to generate electricity. Solar power is most prevalent in the southwestern states because the sun's light is most consistent and strong in that region. However, solar power can be generated anywhere the sun shines. The generation of solar power itself does not yield any toxic chemicals, but small amounts of chemicals are required for the production of photovoltaic cells.

    Conserve Energy
Feb 1, 2009 12:00 PM, By Edward Cohen, Edward Cohen Consulting, and Dan Bemi, MEGTEC Systems
The web coating and laminating process is dependent on fossil fuels, petroleum, coal, and gas as a source of energy. Historically in the US, there has been virtually unlimited availability of fossil fuels at reasonable prices. However, in recent years the cost for a barrel of crude oil has been increasing steadily, with the recent sharp drop regarded by most economists to be an aberration caused by the recession that started in 2008. Experts are predicting prices will increase again as economic growth resumes. Finally, as oil extraction becomes more difficult and expensive, there will come a time when production cannot keep up with demand. To remain competitive under such market conditions, converters need to focus on reducing process energy consumption and increasing the use of renewable energy sources.

    Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels are energy resources that come from the remains of plants and animals. These remains are millions of years old. There are three fossil fuels: petroleum oil, natural gas, and coal.
Fossil fuels, like coal, oil, and natural gas, provide the energy that powers our lifestyles and our economy. Fossil fuels power everything from the planes in the sky to the cars on the road. They heat our homes and light up the night. They're the bedrock on which we base our energy mix.
    Uses
    Providing Electricity:
One of the main uses of fossil fuels it to generate electricity. Coal is the number one fuel source for electric generation, accounting for more than half of all resources used. Natural gas and petroleum also contribute their fair share. So when you look at all the different resources used to generate electricity, it's overwhelmingly fossil fuels doing the work.

    Fossil Fuels
Since the beginning of the industrial revolution , fossil fuels have been important sources of energy. European industrialization began in the late 1700s in England, and coal soon became a major fuel. In 1850 wood was still the main energy source in the United States. During the latter half of the nineteenth century, the United States and other industrialized nations relied on coal (a fossil fuel) to provide the energy for industrialization. Coal remained the major fuel source for many years, and then, in the latter half of the twentieth century, oil and natural gas became the primary energy sources. The first oil well was drilled in Pennsylvania in 1859. Nuclear power and hydroelectric plants supplied about 13 percent and geochemical, wind, and solar energy sources supplied only a fraction of 1 percent. Biomass , including the burning of wood, is not included in the table because it is so difficult to estimate.
