    Foster Parent FAQs
    1. Who are the children? Thousands of children in California's foster care system require temporary out-of-home care because of parental neglect, abuse or exploitation. The largest percentages are African American and Latino children. Some stay in foster care for weeks; some for years. The children are of all ages and varying needs. 2. What is the role of a foster parent? Foster parents provide a supportive and stable family for children who cannot live with their birth parents until family problems are resolved. In most cases, foster parents work with social services staff to reunite the child with birth parents. Foster parents often provide care to many different children. 3. How do I become a foster parent? A license is required to operate a foster home. The process requires a licensing worker to visit your home and meet with you and other family members. Minimum personal, safety and space requirements are required by law. Foster parents work with social services staff to determine the type of child best suited for their home (i.e., age, health issues, and gender). 4. Can I afford to do this?

  • "I am a former DSHS employee who taught foster parents, wrote curriculum, and worked with foster/adopt/relative placement families. I find myself now wearing the shoes of an adoptive parent of 9 and still required to meet the training requirements for foster care. I have taken just about every class the planet can offer, and I STILL enjoy the quality, quantity, and profession information and presentation of your Online Training Program. You have saved my sanity on training. I find myself giggling with you, hoping with you, and learning with you. Thanksabunch!!" - MaryJo "I just finished the course on Anger Management. My goal was to do the reading, take the test and be done with it. Well, surprise, surprise. I loved it!!! The lesson had so much more information in it than just about anger management. It touched on different ways we see the acting out of children (and adults) who are experiencing episodes of unresolved anger. I am a believer in your site and will be visiting often and telling all of my friends. Thanks." Jocelyn

Partnership parenting as a new approach to helping our children and preserving our families was a major focus of this training conference. Isabel Blanco from the State office presented a powerful presentation on the feelings of children coming into the system and how we can help them overcome the trauma of separation from their families. She stressed the need to continue providing high quality care for these fragile children. In addition, attendees were able to experience training on a variety of topics from working in partnership with DFCS to helping our children deal with medical and emotional issues.

Resources South Dakotans who provide foster parenting are making a difference in the lives of children and their birth families. The Department of Social Services ensures the safety, permanency and well-being of the children in our care. Foster parenting promotes the healing process by offering a stable and secure environment until a child can return home or establish an alternative lifelong relationship with a caring adult, through adoption or other permanent situation. South Dakota currently recruits and licenses family foster homes that provide 24-hour care and supervision for abused and/or neglected children. These families open their homes and hearts and give hope to children of South Dakota whose families are in crisis and also play a vital role in:
  • Helping children and families heal Reconnecting children with their families Transitioning children into successful adulthood
There are numerous individuals, along with public and private organizations, who work to increase public awareness for the needs of children living in and leaving foster care as well as for the need and contribution of foster parents.

THE BIG DAY
Well, yesterday was our big day. We got to adopt Cameron! His hearing was at 8:30 a.m. We went into the judge's chambers with ten of our family members and friends. Cameron got to sit on the judge's lap as he signed the order. It was short, sweet, and anti-climatic. We went out to breakfast, got a lot of present giving out of the way, went to my school (where the kids threw me a mini surprise party) and then we went to an indoor play area for a couple hours. We had a pizza lunch there and then went home and rested for awhile before our small group came over for some cake and Guitar Hero. It was a great day. And now we're on to the rest of our lives. We are still in the foster parenting "business" and are once again "expecting" who knows when! I'll keep you posted if/when anything is worth reporting.
(Cameron's shirt says: "I'm a Keeper". We took this picture over the summer, and I've kept it to post today.

  • zSB(3,3) Foster parenting can be both a challenge and a delight to married couples. There is a tremendous reward to knowing that you have made a positive difference in a child's life. However, the foster parenting lifestyle can hurt your marriage if you don't have solid communication skills and the ability to deal with stressful situations. Make sure both of you have a full understanding of how being foster parents will impact your marriage.
FOSTER CARE: A Call to Action
FOSTER CARE: A Call to Action produced by ABC News in June, 2006, provides an indepth look at the foster care system in the United States.
    Be Cautious
We are NOT saying that married couples should refrain from sharing their lives with foster children. We ARE saying that married couples should thoroughly research the foster care laws of the state where they reside to have an understanding of their rights as foster parents. It is important that you understand what you can and cannot do as a foster parent.

How Can You Tell If You Will Make Good Foster Parents?
Whatever the case may be, here are some factors you should consider before applying for a home study which is the next step in becoming foster parents. This could mean a stable marriage and a generally happy household because it is crucial for foster children not to be caught amidst a conflicting home because many have history of abuse, separation or death of a loved one. Are You Patient? Anyone who even remotely considers foster parenting needs to be patient, not just with children, but patient in every way. This is because just the process of becoming a foster parent is long and tedious. Most families have to be fingerprinted and have detailed background checks to make them suitable candidates. The process can be long and grueling. Are You Financially Comfortable?
