Session 3
Discussion questions for Thoreau and Benn Michaels
Foundations of Democracy
This session is devoted to Henry David Thoreau's Walden and Walter Benn Michaels's essay "Walden's False Bottoms," which can be found in the Norton edition of your text. Topics will include democracy, tradition and concepts of time, economy, aesthetics, literary language, and the question of whether Walden has a bottom. Thoreau's overriding concerns are with selfhood, society, and nature, and these concerns will run through our discussion. Henry David Thoreau, June 1856, age 39.
Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons F.O. Matthiessen included Thoreau as one of the American Renaissance writers concerned with the possibilities of democracy. Yet Walden often provokes and antagonizes readers. Many readers invariably characterize Thoreau as arrogant and self-absorbed. What tensions within democratic theory are exposed by Walden ? What variants of democracy (political, economic, socio-cultural, etc.) concern Thoreau the most? We've seen two ways of framing a relationship between democracy and tradition: Stout's concept of piety (respect for sources of being and progress through life) and Ober's understanding of a thinly coherent democratic culture that employs moral exempla from the past to "go on together" as a society. Welcome to the Foundation for Democracy and Sustainable Development
Welcome to the website of the Foundation for Democracy and Sustainable Development. We are a small charity working to develop ideas and innovative practices so that democratic decision-making can work better for sustainable development. We believe that democracy will need to adapt and evolve to meet twenty-first century sustainable development challenges, and that it will need to do so fast.  Issues like climate change, resource scarcity and population growth will create huge pressures for democratic decision-making. The risk is that badly prepared democracies may become less democratic as a result of these pressures. Sustainable development calls for concerted efforts to make sure that democracy is resilient.  Our events, analysis and engagement aim to work out who needs to do what to make sure that democracy delivers sustainable development.

The Likud Is Dead: And So Is Politics
Filed under: Party Structures Israel's Nationals Edit This Published in 2003. When the present writer states that the Likud Party is dead, the sensible reader will understand that I am speaking metaphorically. The Likud is “dead” despite its having won 38 seats in the January 2003 Knesset elections, and despite the probability that it will form the government after the next election. Yes, the Likud is dead, very dead, by which the well-informed and sensitive readers will understand that the Likud is intellectually moribund on the one hand, and heartless on the other. That it is intellectually moribund is obvious: The Likud is still crawling on Labor’s Oslo track, only now it is called the “Road Map” or “Unilateral Separation or Disengagement.” The fact that the Likud has even made overtures to Syria regarding the Golan Heights—Syria, a terrorist state and patron of Hezbollah—clearly indicates that the leaders of the Likud are “brain dead.” The morally sensitive observer will recognize that the Likud (and not only the Likud) is heartless or spineless because it has tolerated the murder of some 800 Jews and the wounding and maiming of 6,000 more, in consequence of which countless thousands of Jewish children are suffering from post-traumatic shock syndrome.

Reader comment on item: Faces of American Islam[: Muslim Immigration] Submitted by Hari Iyer (United States) , Aug 17, 2002 at One of the ways to find out the true intent of Muslims immigrating from Middle East and other Muslim countries is to view the "letters to editor" or "response to various opinion pieces" of these Muslim readers to the newspapers/magazines from these countries.
I was aghast when views from Muslims in Canada/USA writing to their respective countries' newspapers. One reader wrote a response to an opinion survey hoping for country's leaders to adhere to "Islamic standards and practices" and the reader lived in Canada. Exactly what does the reader mean? Taliban type of Islamic dispensation?
Thanks. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes. Original writing only, please. Discovering the foundations of democracy in Charleston.
This is the sixth in a series of articles revolving around the 12th Annual Leadership Summit, scheduled for September 23-25, 2004, in Charleston, S.C. G. Robert George
For the Princeton University professor, please see Robert P. George. For the political writer, please see Robert A George.

Air Vice Marshal Sir Robert Allingham George, KCMG, KCVO, KBE, CB, MC has served as the District 12 Councilmember for the City of Charleston since February 1997 and currently serves as the vice-chair of the 2004 National League of Cities Leadership Training Council.
As a native Charlestonian and councilmember, I am honored that our city is hosting the Twelfth Annual Leadership Summit of the National League of Cities.
Over the last half century I have witnessed the growth of our community and how it has maintained the same elements of cultural importance to the nation as in colonial times. Charleston and the surrounding Lowcountry continue to lead the Southeast Coast as a center of growth, culture and commerce.

Behavioral Foundations of Democracy and Development Edit Behavioral Foundations of Democracy and Development Citations: 1 Ethan Kapstein Since 1974 the world has experienced a "third wave" of democratization. Ensuring that these new democracies consolidate is critical to both global prosperity and peace. Unfortunately, the academic literature that might help policy-makers shape appropriate foreign assistance programs remains underdeveloped, in that it lacks strong behavioral foundations, or explanations of why people act the way they do. This paper argues that the process of democratic consolidation requires a transition from clientelistic to contractual exchange relationships. Without that transition, efforts to promote democratic consolidation are unlikely to succeed. View or Download The following links allow you to view and download full papers.
