Fractals in Crystals Background:
The first picture below is a photograph of mica which has threads of iron ore between the layers of mica: these darker lines highlight the hexagonal structure of the mica. You can click on the blotchy section toward the upper right to see a close-up version of the iron infiltration. The second picture is a photograph of a piece of bismuth. (The original is 1.6 inches long). Bismuth occurs naturally, although this piece was grown artificially in a laboratory. Notice the repeating square shapes at many scales. This is an example of a fractal formed by accretion. Bismuth forms square crystals. You can think of accretion as happening by little particles of bismuth being attracted to the existing crystal, and then becoming attached. The corners of the existing crystal have a larger region in which they can attract particles without competition from their neighbor and therefore the bismuth crystals grow more quickly at the corners than elsewhere.

Natural Fractals Activity Materials:
Background:
One activity we can do with fractals is to start with the "transformations" (the rules), use these to create a fractal. This is what you did in your Fractal Activity. Another activity is to take a natural fractal (such as the Cheasapeake shore), and analyze its fractal dimension. But one of the hardest things to do with fractalsand at the same time the most usefulis to take a natural fractal and try to discover the underlying rules which generate the fractal. That is what you will attempt to do today. Fractals at the North Museum:
There are a variety of fractal-like objects at the North Museum. Here is a list of some of the ones I have found:

TAP Pink/Fractal Noise
This plugin came to life as a secondary product of the development of TAP Fractal Doubler . It adds pink noise to the incoming signal using a one-dimensional random fractal line generated by the Midpoint Displacement Method, which is a computationally cheap method suitable for generating random fractals.
General information
Unique ID I/O ports 1 input / 1 output CPU usage (44.1 kHz) CPU usage (96 kHz) Hard RT Capable Yes In-place operation Supported Provided
Usage tips
The fractal line has one parameter: Fractal Dimension , which may be between and 1. This parameter determines the spectral density of the generated noise. The graph below demonstrates 1024 samples of generated fractal noise using three different settings of the Fractal Dimension. The green graph was made with a setting of (so it is white noise, actually), the red curve is of Fractal Dimension 0.5 and the blue one's dimension is 1. In addition to setting the Fractal Dimension of the generated pink noise, you can mix it to the incoming signal in different amounts. This way you can emulate different signal/noise ratios, and therefore test how your tracks degrade due to additive noise. A really geeky entertainment for hardcore mixing engineers.

Fractal Expressionism
Can Science Be Used To Further Our Understanding Of Art?
Content : Richard Taylor Adam P. Micolich and David Jonas This question triggers reservations from both scientists and artists. However, for the abstract paintings produced by Jackson Pollock in the late 1940s, scientific objectivity proves to be an essential tool for determining their fundamental content. Pollock dripped paint from a can on to vast canvases rolled out across the floor of his barn. Although recognised as a crucial advancement in the evolution of modern art, the precise quality and significance of the patterns created by this unorthodox technique remain controversial. Here we analyse Pollock's patterns and show that they are fractal - the fingerprint of Nature.

Dynamic Scaling of an Adsorption-Diffusion Process on Fractals(General)
We study numerically a dynamic scaling of a diffusion process involving the Langmuir type adsorption. We find dynamic scaling functions in one and two dimensions and compare them with direct numerical simulations. We study further the dynamic scaling law on fractal surfaces. The adsorption-diffusion process obeys the slow fracton dynamics on the fractal surfaces.
