Days Off in France: Archaeological Sites
Our 3 day break saw some of the crew stay at the dig house and visit several of the archaeological sites in the Les Eyzies region. These include some of the painted caves (sorry, no interior shots as photos aren't allowed in these caves), as well as some of the classic sites that were used to develop the initial understanding of the Middle and Upper Paleolithic periods in France, and others that have been more recently excavated. The first stop is Les Eyzies, which you see in the upper photo to the left. Our hardy crew makes sure they're provisioned for their tour (photos in the bottom left). There are numerous painted and engraved caves in this region of France. Here we show you exterior shots of Font de Gaume (top right) and Les Combarelles (bottom right). A few of the classic Middle and Upper Paleolithic sites are next. These are La Micoque (far upper left), Le Moustier (near upper left), and Cro-Magnon (bottom left). The final stop on the tour are several sites that have been under excavation in recent years. These include Grotte XIV (near upper right), Grotte XV (far upper right), and Grotte XVI (bottom right).

PROGRAM
Prehistoric Archaeology in France! Howard Community College (HCC) in Columbia, Maryland, and The University of Durham, UK are uniting to provide a unique opportunity for students to undertake training in archaeological excavation and artifact interpretation at a site of international significance, located in Burgundy, France. Bibracte ( http://www.bibracte.fr/index.php ) was the capital of the Aedui tribe during the Iron Age and was conquered by Julius Caesar during the Gallic Wars (c. 58-51 BC). Today, the site is the center for an archaeological park and museum and is home to a cooperative of European Universities who, supported by the French government, use the site as a training ground for young archaeologists as well as a centre for interpreting Gaulish culture for a popular audience. You will be working and socializing alongside students from a number of different countries including England, France, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Specific accommodations for all University teams are provided in a small village - Glux-en-Glenne – located at the base of the site. These include modern dormitories, a fully staffed cafeteria, research labs, classrooms and a research library. A small café/bar and a few houses are the only other buildings in the village.
