Gaul
main Gaul article S ettled mainly by the Gauls and related Celtic peoples (apart from a shrinking area of Basque population in the south-west and Ligurian population on the southern coast), the area of modern France comprised the bulk of the region of Gaul (Latin Gallia) under Roman rule from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD
Franks
main Franks article In 486, Clovis I, leader of the Salian Franks to the east, conquered the Roman territory between the Loire and the Somme, subsequently uniting most of northern and central France under his rule and adopting (496) the Roman Catholic form of Christianity in preference to the Arianism preferred by rival Germanic rulers. After Clovis's death (511) his realm underwent repeated division while his Merovingian dynasty eventually lost effective power to their successive mayors of the palace, the founders of what was to become the Carolingian dynasty. The assumption of the crown in 751 by Pepin the Short (son of Charles Martel) established Carolingian rule in name as well as in fact. The new rulers' power reached its fullest extent under Pepin's son Charlemagne, (Charles the Great), who in 771 reunited the Frankish domains after a further period of division, subsequently conquering the Lombard kingdom in northern Italy (774), incorporating Bavaria (788) into his realm, defeating the Avars of the Danubian plain (796), advancing the frontier with Muslim Spain as south as Barcelona (801), and subjugating Lower Saxony (804) after prolonged campaigning.

For most of his adult life, Scott Coady had a long distance love affair with the Tour de France. In 1999 he resolved himself to get as close to his beloved Tour as possible. Figuring others may not have the chance to visit the fabled century old race, he brought a handheld video camera along and recorded his attempts to embrace his crush, risking rejection and humiliation. In response to his passion and sincerity, the Tour loved him back and welcomed him into its inner world. Come along for the ride as Scott Coady takes you on the adventure of a life time way behind the scenes and deep inside the Tour de France baby!

History
The world's greatest bicycle race originated in 1903 because of a feud between two French sports newspapers. Le Velo was the original publication. Its competitor, L'Auto -velo , was founded by a former advertiser who had become unhappy with some of Le Velo 's editorial policies. In January of 1903, Le Velo won a trademark suit against its competitor, and L'Auto -velo was forced to become simply L'Auto Fearful that the name change would kill the newspaper, L'Auto editor Henri Desgrange decided that a major race would create publicity and circulation. His cycling reporter, Georges Lefevre suggested a six-day race over roads and through towns rather than on a track. On Jan. 19, 1903, L'Auto announced "the greatest cycling trial in the entire world. A race more than a month long: Paris to Lyon to Marseille to Toulouse to Bordeaux to Nantes to Paris." With a 20-franc entrance fee, response was poor. Only 15 riders had signed up by a week before the scheduled May 31 start. Desgrange postponed the race to July 1, announced that the first 50 riders were given 5 francs a day for expenses, and increased the prize money to 20,000 francs.

The Players
Lance will count on his " boyz " Tyler Hamilton and Kevin Livingston to do the job again in the mountains in 2000. These home-grown American riders are powerful, smart and loyal and should give Armstrong the set-up basis he needs to repeat as TDF champ this year. After less than positive comments about his win in last year's Tour by top riders like Pantani and Bartoli, Armstrong may be motivated to show the world that he can beat a much tougher Tour peloton this year, packed with hungry former winners on the rebound like Jan Ullrich (Telekom) and Marco Pantani (Mercatone Uno). Marco Pantani remains an enigma: the recent emergence of the diminutive climber in last month's Giro d'Italia was like a re-baptism by fire for the unpredictable Italian. He suffered like a dog at first after starting with little racing, but by the final few stages in the Alps, Pantani played a vital role helping his talented young teammate Stefano Garzelli capture the Giro win. Can Pantani come back as a Tour contender ? The question remains...

France history or the history of France is a series of epoch making and fascinating events which were instrumental in the shaping of the present day France. The name “France”owes its origin to Latin “Francia” meaning “the country of the Franks”. The Franks were the people of Germanic origin who conquered the land at a time when the ancient Roman Empire declined, . France formed a part of the Celtic territory called the Gaul or the Gallia in the ancient times. History of France narrates that the country emerged as an independent nation in the 9 th .century. It was under the monarchical rule and emerged as a great power in the Europe flourishing in political, economic and the cultural fields in the 17 th century. In the year 1789, French Revolution caused a serious turbulence deposing the monarchy. Napoleon Bonaparte took over the reigns of the country in the year 1799 and extended the territories France by capturing other European nations The modern history of France or the New France history narrates the story of the huge losses (both material and manpower),the country suffered in the two World Wars

[Upload image] France was one of the earliest countries to progress from feudalism into the era of the nation-state. Its monarchs surrounded themselves with capable ministers and French armies were among the most innovative disciplined and professional of their day. Its present name (France) was derived from the latin Francia, meaning 'country of the Franks' During the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715) France was the dominant power in Europe. But overly ambitious projects and military campaigns of Louis and his successors led to chronic financial problems in the 18th century. Deteriorating economic conditions and popular resentment against the complicated system of privileges granted the nobility and clerics were among the principal causes of the French Revolution (1789-94). Although the revolutionaries advocated republican and egalitarian principles of government France reverted to forms of absolute rule or constitutional monarchy four timesthe Empire of Napoleon the Restoration of Louis XVIII the reign of Louis-Philippe and the Second Empire of Napoleon III. After the Franco-Prussian War (1870) the Third Republic was established and lasted until the military defeat of 1940.
