Contact Us French Polynesia Geography French Polynesia comprises 120 islands divided into five archipelagos: the Society Archipelago, Tuamotu Archipelago, Marquesas Islands, Austral Islands and Mangreva Islands. The islands have a total land area of 4,167 square kilometers (1,622 sq. mi) scattered over 2,500,000 square kilometers (965,255 sq. mi) of ocean. Aside from Tahiti, some other important atolls, islands, and island groups in French Polynesia are: Ahe, Bora Bora, Hiva `Oa, Huahine, Maiao, Maupiti, Mehetia, Moorea, Nuku Hiva, Raiatea, Tahaa, Tetiaroa, Tubuai, and Tupai. Most of the islands are volcanic and origin and are comprised of dense jungles surrounded by coral atolls or reefs. The Windward and Leeward Islands are mountainous with coastal plains.
