Posted on July 24th, 2009, by FTS Concerns about dwindling fossil fuel resources, current levels of petroleum consumption, and growing pressure to shift to more sustainable energy sources are among many factors prompting the transition from our current energy infrastructure to one that uses less carbon and requires the efficient conversion of energy. Fuel cells have the potential to replace the internal combustion engine in vehicles and provide power in stationary and portable power applications, as they are energy-efficient, clean and fuel-flexible.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells: Energy of the Future
By Kenneth Barbalace [Tuesday, September 05, 2006] President George W Bush believes that hydrogen is the fuel of the future. In 2003 he announced an initiative worth $1.2 billion over a period of five years to fund research into the use of hydrogen fuel cells. The EU and Member States agree and are estimated to have supported activities in this field to the tune of 600 million euros for the 2002-2006 period.
The biggest driving force (no pun intended) behind the massive investment is the auto industry, which relies on oil-fuelled cars, but the electronics industry, which currently uses limited-life lithium ion batteries, is also making significant contributions....

The United States now imports over 70 percent of the petroleum that it consumes from other countries. Clearly, a day looms in the not-too-distant future when electric and hybrid vehicles will be required for a majority of transportation needs; not just in this country, but also on a global scale. Similarly, an increasing percentage of heating requirements will need to be met by current and developing fuel cell technologies. GFS has the equipment, the experience, and the expertise to fill these market needs. We are vertically integrated in a number of key chemistries, including lithium, nickel, cobalt, and silver. We have recently added personnel with expertise in high valence as well as low valence metal systems to our team, to support several of these critical materials. These valence-change materials are the key electrochemical basis for many of the current and experimental battery systems in existence today. Our specialty bulk drying equipment allows us to provide the ultra-dry reagents used in many fuel cell and advanced battery systems in commercial as well as experimental production today.

Mr. Sauber, you have just come from the World Hydrogen Energy Conference, WHEC, in Essen, which you organized on behalf of the EnergieAgentur.NRW (energy agency). What did you get from the WHEC? Isn't the supply with hydrogen as an energy carrier mainly a project that is being driven by only a small number of large companies and countries? What will be the highlights among the lectures for visitors to the f-cell in 2010? Mr. Sauber, with the f-cell you have now been accompanying this line of industry for ten years now. What has taken place during this period and, in your opinion, how will things continue? More information on the internet:

Source : siam Concerns about dwindling fossil fuel resources, current levels of petroleum consumption, and growing pressure to shift to more sustainable energy sources are among the many factors prompting the transition from our current energy infrastructure to one that uses less carbon and requires the efficient conversion of energy. This necessitates collecting energy from ambient sources including wind, solar, and geothermal power, and converting it into appropriate forms for distributing electricity. While it is possible for this electric power to be distributed efficiently, conversion is necessary for use in automobiles and large-scale storage is problematic. PEM Fuel Cells Fuel cells are highly effective devices for converting energy from one form to another, they are more energy-efficient than combustion engines, and a variety of sources can be used to power them. In particular, Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cells, also called Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cells, take hydrogen and oxygen from the air to create electricity. They are typically used in automobiles. When pure hydrogen is used as a fuel, these fuel cells emit only heat and water as byproducts, eliminating concerns about air pollutants and greenhouse gases. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, fuel cells have the potential to replace the internal combustion engine in vehicles and provide power in stationary and portable power applications as they are energy-efficient, clean, and fuel-flexible.
