free for members Tate Modern celebrates the centenary of this dramatic art movement with a ground-breaking exhibition. Futurism was launched by the Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in 1909 with the publication of the Manifesto of Futurism on the front page of Paris newspaper Le Figaro . Drawing upon elements of Divisionism and Cubism, the Futurists created a new style that broke with old traditions and expressed the dynamism, energy and movement of their modern life. This exhibition both showcases the work of key Futurists such as Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni and Gino Severini and explores art movements reacting to Futurism. Highlights include Boccioni's dynamic bronze Unique Forms of Continuity in Space 1913 and Picasso's Head of a Woman (Fernande) 1909 as well as major works by artists such as Braque, Malevich and Duchamp.

Futurism was a 20th century art movement. Although a nascent Futurism can been seen surfacing throughout the very early years of that century, the essay Entwurf einer neuen Astetik der Tonkunst (Sketch of a New Aesthetic of Music) by the Italian composer Ferruccio Busoni is sometimes claimed as its true jumping-off point. Futurism was a largely Italian movement, although it also had adherents in other countries, most notably Russia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futurism_(art) [Feb 2005]
    Art of Noise
To most people, “The Art of Noise” means one thing: British superproducer Trevor Horn's early-'80s studio group and their still-cool hit “Close to the Edit.” But the band's moniker was taken from the name of an artistic manifesto written in 1913 by a painter-turned-composer named Luigi Russolo , a member of the now-legendary Italian Futurist movement. The Futurists were strident iconoclasts who sought to represent the

Futurism was a twentieth century Italian and Russian avant-garde movement in literature and arts. It promoted extreme artistic innovation and experimentation, declaring a radical disassociation from the past and a focus on new art, technology, and politics, commonly manifested through primitivism. The Futurists strongly rejected the self-awareness behind the overextended lyricism of symbolism—the dominant school of the time. In contrast, it showed a preference for the visual arts that discussed conservative social elements and challenged them in order to provoke a violent negative response. Italian Futurism began with a manifesto by F. T. Marinetti (1876-1944) titled "Fondazione e Manifesto del Futurismo" (The Founding and Manifesto of Futurism), which declared that artistic work without an aggressive element could not be considered a masterpiece. He enunciated the principles of Futurism in relation to poetry in "Parole in Libertà" (Words in Freedom), demanding a language free of syntax and logical ordering that allowed the poet to rapidly convey intense emotion. In "Immaginazione Senza Fili" (Wireless Imagination) and "Analogia Disegnata" (Pictorialized Analogy), he discussed the maximum freedom of imagery and metaphor, which led to expressive use of typography—a varying of font sizes and styles within a word or on the same line and free disposition of words on the printed page. Important Italian Futurists poets besides Marinetti were E. Cavacchioli, L. Folgore, and A. Palazzeschi.

The movement was at its strongest from 1909, when Filippo Marinetti's first manifesto of Futurism appeared, until the end of World War One. Futurism was unique in that it was a self-invented art movement. The idea of Futurism came first, followed by a fanfare of publicity; it was only afterwards that artists could find a means to express it. Marinetti's manifesto, printed on the front page of Le Figaro, was bombastic and inflammatory in tone - "set fire to the library shelves... flood the museums" - suggesting that he was more interested in shocking the public than exploring Futurism's themes. Painters in the movement did have a serious intent beyond Marinetti's bombast, however. Their aim was to portray sensations as a "synthesis of what one remembers and of what one sees", and to capture what they called the 'force lines' of objects.

Futurism (1909-1944) was perhaps the first movement in the history of art to be engineered and managed like a business. Since its beginning, Futurism was very close to the world of advertising and, like a business, promoted its product to a wide audience. For this reason, Futurism introduced the use of the manifesto as a public means to advertise its artistic philosophy, and also as a polemic weapon against the academic and conservative world. The poet F.T. Marinetti, founder of the movement, wrote in his first manifesto of February 1909, "Up to now, literature has exalted a pensive immobility, ecstasy, and sleep. We intend to exalt aggressive action, a feverish insomnia, the racer's stride, the mortal leap, the punch and the slap. We affirm that the world's magnificence has been enriched by a new beauty: the beauty of speed. . . We will destroy the museums, libraries, academies of every kind, will fight moralism, feminism, every opportunistic or utilitarian cowardice." Futurism, as opposed to Cubism, an essentially visual movement, found its roots in poetry and in a whole renovation of language, and featured the concept of the New Typography. Since 1905, Marinetti had promoted from the pages of his magazine

Julian D. A. Wiseman Abstract: The current design of bond future resembles an agricultural contract. A better design would prevent squeezes, and thus allow a bond future to better represent its underlyings. Contents: Introduction The new design An example delivery Conclusion Publication history: only here. Usual and terms apply.
    Introduction
In 1976 the Chicago Board of Trade listed a future on long-dated US Treasuries, and in 1981 LIFFE listed a future on British government debt. There are now futures based on the debt of many governments, and the largest futures contract in the world is based on 10-year German debt. But the design of these all these bond futures is somewhat strange: The interest-rate markets exist to allow borrowers to raise funds and investors to purchase assets. They allow the various types of interest-rate and credit risks to be repackaged into a form that someone is willing to hold. For the most part, the instruments that are traded are well designed for their purpose. Some of these instruments are complicated, but their complications are necessary, perhaps to make them into a better hedge for something else, or to reduce credit risk, or for some other need. (The quotations above and below are taken from chapter 13 of This paper describes a better design of futures contract.

Are the futures markets important to you?
From my experience, you need two things to make good trading decisions:
      1. A basic, fundamental understanding of the market and the concerns that are driving it. 2. An objective assessment of market behavior, based on a keen observation of prices over time.
The Dailyfutures Report gives you both. At the close of each business day, you get a single email that contains the most important news for each market. The email takes just a few minutes to read and gets right to the point. The heart of the report is the Chart Comments. In this section, we step back from the crowd and take a look at what prices are actually doing. As time unfolds, prices give off valuable clues that are worth paying attention to and I point those out. I invite you to try the Dailyfutures Report. For $50.00, you receive a one-month education in the futures markets that you cannot get anywhere else. Of course, I cannot guarantee that you will profit from the trading insights every month, but give it a try - you might learn something and you are under no obligation to re-subscribe.

    http://internetbrothers.com/futureshock.htm
What this is about: Scientists in the United States have taken a major step forward in using DNA, the building blocks of life that carry the human genetic blueprint, to process information and solve mathematical problems. DNA computing has sparked intense interest because more information can be stored on molecules of DNA than any silicon computer chip. Scientists estimate that a dried gram of DNA can store more information than a trillion CDs.

    DNA Computing
Lloyd Smith and his colleagues at the University of Wisconsin-Madison describe how they have transferred a set of DNA molecules from the test tube to a glass plate. "It demonstrates DNA computing on surfaces, which provides a relatively simple pathway of upscaling DNA computing to solve large problems," Smith said. "It shows that DNA computing can be put in a form which is very amenable to automation." Instead of retaining information as ones and zeros and using mathematical formula to solve a problem, DNA computing uses data represented by a pattern of molecules arranged on a strand of DNA. Specific enzymes act like software to read, copy, and manipulate the code in predictable ways. Smith says DNA is a potential way of getting around the problem of the silicon chip, which scientists believe cannot be scaled down much further. Smith cautions that DNA computing is still in its infancy and a long way from challenging chip technology. Only about a dozen centers around the world are working on DNA computing and much more needs to be done. "The interest in the community of computer people is more as exploration or new models for computing than in actual practical consequences in the near term," Smith said.

    Saving the Future
    "What is to be Done?"
Humanity faces an ever accelerating and uncertain future. We are all acquainted with the panoply of individual problems faced by our country and the international community. Solutions are many and controversial. But sometimes instead of being "policy wonks", we need to step back for a broader view, scan the forest instead of the trees. It is this view and its implications for action with which we are concerned here.
Note: As this site came to be conceived, the phrase "What is to be Done?" kept running through the conceiver's head. It is most commonly associated with an early publication of Lenin. But in using this title, Lenin was echoing an utopian novel by Nikolai Chernyshevsky, an effort for which Chernyshevsky was rewarded by seven years in prison.

    Life in the Future
a not too serious look at life in 2012 and beyond
In 1964 I attempted to take a serious look into the future. That was a time when most people assumed that everything would keep getting better, and that future generations would enjoy life in a much better world. At that time, I read a few books which made detailed predictions about the positive impact of increased mechanization. Many of those predictions eventually proved to be false. This taught me not to take predictions of the future too seriously. It also taught me that with the important issues of today, like climate change, health, and violence, we can't afford to sit back and assume that our lives will automatically get better; nor should we assume that the leaders we elect will automatically take us in a direction that is best for us.
