OFFICE SPACE NEEDS REDUCING AS DIGITAL WORK INCREASES
The need for office space is waning quickly as the amount of digital work increases requiring a laptop and internet connection. The need for actual office space, supervisors and traditional employment arrangements will soon be over. Meetings will be held on line or via 3D teleconferencing technology and there will be significant savings to companies that will no longer need large buildings to house their employees. There will be some exceptions, for example laboratory research and drug development, which is highly collaborative and requires space, but even this will morph as new ways of developing therapeutics via bioinformatics and data ...
EXTREME BENEFITS OF WEIGHT LIFTING DURING HOLIDAYS
Researchers have found that lifting weights for 45 minutes to one hour three days a week during the holidays will reduce over eating and control weight gain. During the holidays most people stop workouts, which reduces caloric burning. Weight lifting creates a caloric burn long after the exercise stops.

Short term thinking drives out long term strategy, every time.
      - Herbert Simon, Nobel Prize-winning economist In times of change, learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.
      - Eric Hoffer Don't panic!
      - Arthur C. Clarke, when asked "If you could tell people one thing, just one thing, what would that be?" [from interview published in The Futurist , July-Aug 2008] I believe one should be optimistic [about the future] because there is a chance of a good self-fulfilling prophecy. It is dangerous to be pessimistic because that could become a self-fulfilling prophecy, but a bad one.
      - Arthur C. Clarke, [from interview published in The Futurist , July-Aug 2008] I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.
      - Thomas Jefferson A man who wants to make a good instrument must first have a precise understanding of what the instrument is to be used for; and he who intends to build a good instrument of war must first ask himself what the next war will be like.

    Unintended Consequences of Biofuels
Biofuels, particluarly those derived from ethanol, have been heralded as an ideal way to wean us off of polluting and increasingly expensive fossil fuels. While we may have no choice but to rely on biofuels in the future, some futurists are sounding the alarm about the unintended consequences of biofuel reliance. In July, the futurist think tank Global Business Network noted that crop growth for biofuels could come at the expense of the world food supply . Others are citing the phenomenon of "agflation," or the increased price of all things agricultural, from produce to dairy products to real estate in rural areas. Indeed, manufacturers of all types are beginning to notice higher prices for animal by-products used in products such as soaps.
While market forces may eventually correct agflation-driven price increases, the time is now to understand that energy solutions such as biofuel are not "magic bullets" without impact in other areas, and to mitigate those impacts.

How you can be successful with foresight by futurist John Mahaffie, Leading Futurists LLC
Follow the Water: we must understand complex systems like water, for a better future
by John Mahaffie on October 15, 2010 Today is Blog Action Day 2010 : This year, the focus is water. My company, Leading Futurists Water illustrates one of the difficulties in exploring emerging and future issues. People are typically un-practiced about seeing the complex interplay of issues, trends, and changes around us, and making sense of them. Water is part of a system of complex systems. Following through in our thinking many of the issues, forces, and interactions in those systems is essential to really understanding water issues. Culture wires the brain
by John Mahaffie on August 6, 2010 Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis that the language we speak shapes how we think as well. Culture is slow to change, much more so than consumer trends, fads and fashion, and material culture. Culture is what we use, without thinking about it, to decide right and wrong and what things mean. It shapes our response to almost everything, and it underpins our family and social structures and relationships with others. Culture is not immutable, but it is extremely slow and difficult to change. In our foresight work, we use the integral futures thinking of Ken Wilber, amplified, and brought into a greater futures focus by Rick Slaughter.[

News of the Best of Times and the Worst of Times - Living in Paradox BBC Brain Science Some studies have suggested that up to one in five people have trouble with maths, affecting not just their ability to complete problems but also to manage everyday activities such as telling the time and managing money. Neuroscientists believe that activity within the parietal lobe plays a crucial role in this ability, or the lack of it. When magnetic fields were used in earlier research to disrupt electrical activity in this part of the brain, previously numerate volunteers temporarily developed discalculia, finding it much harder to solve maths problems. The latest research goes a step further, using a one milliamp current to stimulate the parietal lobe of a small number of students. The current could not be felt, and had no measurable effect on other brain functions. As it was turned on, the volunteers tried to learn a puzzle which involved substituting numbers for symbols. Those given the current from right to left across the parietal lobe did significantly better when given, compared to those who were given no electrical stimulation. The direction of the current was important - those given stimulation running in the opposite direction, left to right, did markedly worse at these puzzles than those given no current, with their ability matching that of an average six-year-old. The effects were not short-lived, either. When the volunteers whose performance improved was re-tested six months later, the benefits appear to have persisted. There was no wider effect on general maths ability in either group, just on the ability to complete the puzzles learned as the current was applied.

    Directed Panspermia:
    Targets and Propulsion
We can soon launch panspermia missions to seed other habitable solar systems. We can target nearby stars and star-forming zones in interstellar clouds. Each mission can seed dozens of new solar systems where local life has not formed. We may launch swarms of capsules by solar sails from Earth orbit, or using shielded 10 - 100 kg payloads that will disperse into millions of capsules at the targets. Each capsule can seed a new planet, or incorporate in asteroids and comets, which will deliver them to planets later when they can sustain life. Biological Payload
The payloads can contain microorganisms that will start a self-sustaining ecosystem: algae, bacteria, and cysts of multicellular organisms (eg., rotifers) that can speed up higher evolution. Eventually, intelligent beings may evolve who will expand Life further in the galaxy.

HOME PAGE What are 5 civilizations? communication technology about religion ... BOOK WorldHistorySite.com back to: Home Page Predicting the future Some Patterns in World History and How they can be Used to Predict the Future Civilizations belong to a living culture and have characteristics of living organisms. They rise and fall in the cycles of life. World historians have identified certain societies that have gone through the complete cycle. Rome's civilization, once powerful, has now become extinct. So have civilizations of the Babylonian, Mayan, Sinic, Indic, Syriac, and other societies. Civilization, in a broad sense, transcends the life cycles of individual societies, passing its culture along to peoples in many parts of the earth. But they, too, have come one after another to comprise successive historical epochs. Four civilizations have already come and developed to a mature state. Another has recently appeared on the cultural horizon; it remains in embryonic form. That makes five civilizations altogether, which are: Civilization I: This is the earliest form of civilized society beginning in the 4th millennium B.C. with the rise of Mesopotamian and Egyptian city-states and culminating in the four great empires - Roman, Parthian, Kushan, and Han Chinese - of the 2nd and early 3rd centuries A.D. Its age was characterized by by conflict between nomadic and agricultural societies and by wars and political empire-building. The technology of writing (originally, in ideographic form) supported its culture.
