Geographical Location The islands are located roughly 1000 km straight west of mainland Ecuador. There are 19 major islands and many smaller islets, whose land mass together covers 7880 km2 over an area of 50 000 km2 of Pacific ocean. Isabela is the largest of the islands, having an area of 4590 km2. It also boasts the highest elevation in the archipelago with Wolf volcano reaching 1645 m.
Geological History The islands now called Galapagos are of recent volcanic origin click to volcano ) having risen out of the sea a few million years ago. A geological theory called " Hot Spot " tries to explain their creation by imagining huge magma blocks escaping through an opening in the earth's crust and building themselves up over million s of years. Two major tectonic plates meet in the vicinity and spread or move away from each other thus creating the spaces for those mantle plumes to form.

The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago consisting of some 16 islands and numerous islets scattered over an area of nearly 36,000 square miles around the Equator . Each major island, with the exception of the largest island, Isabela, consists of a single large shield volcano . Isabela was formed from six volcanoes joined above sea level. The total land area of all the islands, islets and rocks that form the Galapagos Islands is about 3,028 square miles, with Isabela making up more than half the total land area, at 1,700 square miles. The islands all rose from the ocean floor as the tops of volcanoes, possibly during the Pliocene era , and have never been connected by land to any mainland area. Today, the Galapagos Islands remain one of the most active oceanic volcano areas on Earth.

The famous islands are located in Ecuador about 960 kilometers off the mainland. Made famous by Charles Darwin, the Galapagos Islands are no less enthralling now than they were a hundred years ago. Every year, thousands of curious visitors journey to the remote islands to behold the wondrously variegated wildlife that inspired The Origin of Species. The islands are found at the coordinates 1°40'N-1°36'S, 89°16'-92°01'W. Straddling the equator, islands in the chain are located in both the northern and southern hemisphere with Wolf volcano and Ecuador volcano on Isabela Island being directly on the equator line. Española the southernmost island and Tower the northernmost island are spread out over a distance of 132 miles (220 km).

The archipelago is constituted by 13 greater islands and more than 200 islets and rocks that cover about 8.010 km2.
The volcanic eruptions and the geological changes had created these 13 greater islands, 6 medium and more than 42 small islands and islets that were formed 6 million years ago. Not only Galápagos geography is wonderful, but its flora and fauna which gave an incentive to the interest of Charles Darwin.
The Islas Galápagos have no comparison with any other place in the world and are, without overreact, one of the earth’s wonders. In 1973 this archipelago was formed, with the Isabela, Santa Cruz and San Cristobal cantons, where Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the county town, is located. Is not only a National Park, but professed Natural World Heritage Site. The Baltra island is protected zone, and is where the airport is established and base of the Army and the Air Force of Ecuador.
In the protected regions we find three subsystems: Park, Marine Reserve and Human Settlements. The submarine chain CARNEGIE RIDGE joins the archipelago of Galápagos with Sudamérica and the Cocos Ridge links with Central America, although these submarine chains never integrated America.

The Galapagos Islands is located 1,000 km (600 miles) from the coastline of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean. This tiny chain of volcanic islands is among the most dynamic in the world. Constantly changing with the formation of new lava fields, the Galapagos Islands are expanding and eroding with the many volcanic eruptions that have taken place here over the centuries. The Galapagos Archipelago consists of thirteen large islands, six smaller islands and over forty islets that have official names. Many small rocks and islets remain unnamed. The 13 main islands are Baltra, Espanola, Fernandina, Floreana, Genovesa, Isabela, Marchena, Pinta, Pinzon, San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Santiago. These islands are well isolated from other land masses and straddle the equator at the 90th meridian west. The nearest land, mainland Ecuador, is some 960 km to the east. To the northeast lies Cocos Island [720 km) and Costa Rica (1,100 km). Sixteen hundred kilometres to the north is Guatemala, while to the south about 3,200 km lie Easter and San Felix Islands.
